TEDxEastHampton - Paul Roossin on the Neurology of Dreams

Ғылым және технология

Paul Roossin brings a broad background in science, technology, and entrepreneurship to Nanotronics Imaging. Paul trained as a neurobiologist at Rockefeller University where he performed pioneering investigations into the neural substrates of memory consolidation and recall. Seduced by computer technology, he then spent the next fifteen years at IBM's Research Division, where he and his team created the world's most accurate machine translation system, for translating French texts into English. At IBM he also produced the first commercial continuous speech, large vocabulary speech recognition system, which had an accuracy rate of over 99%. As an entrepreneur, he and two friends founded ConsumerSearch.com, a shopping meta-review website; it grew to be one of the largest shopping sites on the web and was sold to The New York Times in 2007.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together and share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x= independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (* Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I really like this. So much of life is spent in the confusion of dreams. Many great minds have tried to make sense of them. This idea is compelling and deserving of further thought and research.

It is invigorating to learn about Neurogenesis, something I wasn't aware that happens all through life. Does it slow down and stop as we grow old? Thinking in terms of a subject I'm interested in, Films, dreams; according to this hypothesis, seem like the existing neurons showing the newly formed neurons a film to get them up to speed on the individual psyche and their place within it. I also want to ask if the resonating originates from the hippocampus. Thanks. :D
