Sonny Liston is my most favourite boxer of all time. He had all the tools, punching power, reach, fist size, chin, technique, defence,head movement and intimidation.

Legends state that Liston was 45 years when he lost to Ali and was injured on his shoulders. The second fight is clear from Ali's own reaction was fixed. Well he lost just 3 times maybe. Certainly he is the greatest boxer of all time.

I had a military father who raised us. We didn’t have money or the luxury, but to have a real Father in your life is a privilege. For others who never had that luxury is terrible. This is the problem with our society is a fatherless families. I wish I had Teddy Atlas as a trainer and I would out of respect & humility take everything he had to teach.

And sometimes it's best if your Father wasn't there at all. Mine was a monster and he fucked my Brother and Sister up so bad it's disgusting. I was his main target though. Why? He thought I was gay when I was little because I was so effeminate. He fucked me up the worst. The hyper violence and mental torture destroyed the roots to my proverbial tree. I waited too long to seek professional help and now I'm a complete loser that lost everything I had because the internal pain I didn't understand led me to abusing pain medication because the internal maelstrom of madness would go back into its cave when I took the pills. Anyway, enough about me. We need not only more Fathers but better Fathers as well.

I disagree with you totally about him favoring Tyson. He just knows Tyson. I know he knew a 15-year-old kid when they split up but Teddy is all about the psychological aspect of it and he's right with Tyson you can see it if you really watch for it. The thing is is I totally disagree with most of Teddy Atlas's training techniques and his fight plans. I think he just doesn't know what it takes to make a champion but he can build a very good fighter or great fighters confidence. He's lucky he had such a great teacher in CusDAmato.

At times in little statements but certain things no Mike Tyson himself said cus told him that he's not a good fighter he beats people he knocks people out but he is not a good fighter and teddy said that and people who hear that statement take it like he is slandering him but cusdamoto was Teddy Atlas mentor so he knows Mike Tyson more than we do remember he taught Mike how to fight

I love and respect the character and principles that Teddy Atlas possesses and displays while on camera.

I'm guessing Ken or one of the producers told Teddy that the comments on the first video were overwhelmingly about Teddy's history with Tyson and saying its sour grapes. Teddy probably felt the need to clarify that from his perspective, he feels these are valid criticisms of Tyson that he would have even without the history they have, and that not pointing out these things about Tyson would be doing a disservice to the history that is supposed to be honest and objective, not tiptoeing around a point because he's afraid someone will think he is just being bitter. He definitely beat the topic into the ground but had he just jumped straight into it saying Tyson would lose most of those fights, people would have lit up the comment section saying Teddy is just a hater because of his bad history with Tyson.

Liston was much, much older than they listed him for the Ali fights. There’s a good book by a guy named Gallender out there that tells you how old he probably was. Evidence-based.

Not that Liston would have had a chance anyway, I'm sorry but although Liston began professional boxing at a later age, in 1964 when he had been training to fight Floyd Patterson whom he annihilated, he sparred with a 16/17 year old George Foreman who he said at the time "everyone I know tells me I hit the hardest, but my stable boy can hit harder than I". Whether this was true at the time or just a joke, this was not the only instance that Liston has said these things regarding Foreman before his prestigious career (and Liston's untimely death). At best he was a smaller less powerful Foreman with better fundamentals. And young Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay at the time) had the fastest hands and feet the world had ever seen terrific combinations inhumane timing and a unbelievable chin and heart that no one even knew about at the time.

@@Kingkodiakbear smaller, yes but less powerful? I doubt it. Liston had a thunderous and accurate jab. He knocked off Wayne Bethea's teeth. 16 pieces of them. With a jab. He manhandled Cleveland Williams, who although not as strong as Foreman, was still an incredible puncher. Liston has bigger hands then Foreman, and longer reach. Foreman might be faster, and stronger physically. But something tells me that Liston hits harder then him. Chuck Wepner said Liston hit harder than Foreman. Ali said that when he fought Goerge, he had to let George hit him, when he fought Liston, he had to make Liston didnt hit him. Of course Ali said Shavers hit the hardest. But i think looking at common opponents, Liston hits harder then Foreman. The reason Liston didnt get enough credits was that people hate him at the time and lack of competetition. George had the privilige of Pulverizing Joe Frazier but people forgot that Feazier ducked Liston. And old Liston at that. If Frazier had fought Liston, we might have had a better comparison. Liston was slower, smaller but had better fundamentals and hits atleast as hard or harder.

@@faizfahmihashim8199 its fair to come to that conclusion, but I personally don't think anyone hit as hard as Foreman and that is not an easy point to argue with. He used to spar Sonny Liston when they were young, both Sonny and Foreman said that each other were some of the strongest men each other have ever sparred against, but sheer power would have to go to Foreman. Sonny Liston throughout his career Liston had solid fundamentals and fairly accurate punches. George Foreman was reletively inaccurate but somehow more successful. Sonny had huge hands and an incredible reach but Foreman was freakishly strong using his arms to push people around and into the ropes where he wanted them. Foreman was no doubt physically stronger and I would say even though Liston was one of the hardest hitters of his generation, Foreman was possibly the hardest hitters in any generation.

George Foreman in comeback was never knocked down or even given an 8 count !! I think every other top 10 heavyweight in the 90s was KOed or at least knocked down or took a standing 8 count, But Not Big George in his 40s !!!

I say prime Tyson with Kevin Rooney beats Liston. It's a 50/50 fight but I give Tyson the edge with the speed.

Howard Thurman Prime Tyson with Rooney beats everybody including Ali. Teddy’s still bitter about his breakup with Mike. That’s why he doesn’t give Mike the proper credit.

I am a 68yr old Englishman, an ex amateur boxer who loves the sport and Teddy Atlas is my favourite American involved in the sport of boxing, honest, knowledgeable and friendly. what more can you ask? Thanks, Teddy and believe me when I tell you that you have so much respect coming to you from our small Island!

Teddy’s interviews are outstanding, great work keep it up.

I give Frazier a shot vs Tyson. The only fighter he ever looked bad against was Foreman. And Foreman was an absolute monster.

Mike Tyson in general,Teddys insight, and their past together is, to me, one of the most compelling relationships in sports history. Can listen to Teddy talk about Iron Mike all day!

15:50 what he says about Tyson being able to erase resistance with his prodigious punching is really interesting. Maybe one of the biggest reasons people still love him is because it's such an evocative and tantalizing metaphor to carry a weapon so effective that you can bypass your limitations. Instead of having to be weak and struggle against something dangerous, you can just smack it down.

Fascinating. I love this segment! Keep them coming. I agree with Teddy. My boxing knowledge is limited but what Teddy says makes sense to me. I’m interested to hear Marciano vs anyone as well as Sugar Ray Robinson versus some more recent fighters. Also, Jack Johnson.

These guys are incredible. I could listen to either one of them talk for hours about boxing like I’ve been doing the past few while working. Ken has great patience and really knows how to give Teddy his space while still being brilliant. Teddy, he’s just The Godfather of tech. His insights and analogies cease to amaze me. I had to agree with all the assessments. Thanks guys!

@sfg gh Yes of course bro. Bodybuilders started using them from early 60s (and some prior). But in boxing (and I grew up watching Tyson and Hagler in the 80s), I always felt - as do many - that the sport was relatively clean. If you look at the physiques in the 90s (e.g. Holy, Morrison, and even a post-prison Tyson) there are more suspicious signs. Just my view

@@PM-ut8nl It is not the person he is it is the person he was trained to become Cus Damato used to explain boxing situations in the same method by using life experiences to get across what he was explaining except Cus Damato was more articulate than Teddy Atlas is - just imagine how good Mike Tyson would have become had Kevin Rooney and Teddy Atlas had both been in Mike Tysons corner - come to that imagine how long Mike Tyson would have remained Heavyweight Champion had Cus Damato not passed away and such a shame Cus Damato was not alive to see Mike Tyson become Heavyweight Champion - a lot of what ifs there but what if?

Can’t wait to hear the Duran v. Mayweather analysis and the Jones v. Hearns take. I also would love to hear a Chavez v. Pacquiao analysis.

Tyson’s head movement and speed would’ve been a lot for anyone at that period to deal with. Btw, Tyson was scared as a little kid alone in Brownsville in the 70’s. Once Tyson got a little older he ran with well known street guys. All of them respected mike. Mike just wasn’t talk in or out of the ring. His intimidation factor was higher for a reason.

Foreman and espacially Liston where more intimidating. Liston was number 1 George number 2 Ali beats his head movement, and has better footwork. Foreman hit him, and had he not used his defense and went aggresive he would have lost. NO ONE goes in on Foreman or Liston. Not even Mike.

I agree with Teddy 100% also that MIke's style was made for Foreman . People always say Frazier was not as fast .. as Mike , and didn't have the technical skills .But Mike would have the same problem still . He's down low .. with short arms , coming up at George , right in front of him . Every time Frazier lunged up at him , he got caught . Also agree when Teddy said George could take Mike's shots . He got hit with some clean shots , from Morrison who was a very hard hitter and he took them .

@Fredrick Frederickson which tyson were you watching? guys like bonecrusher smith and mitch greene and james tillis all stood in there with tyson right to the end, not one of them was close to being stopped , and none of these three were anywhere in the same class as foreman or liston, against pastry chefs and cab drivers tyson looked great, he beat the bums he was supposed to beat, he also could look ordinary like he did agasint tillis, or ineffective like he did against smith

This is a real fight fans dream matchup man this would have been a fight to see

I've never seen this episode of the mythical match ups very powerful stuff very moving it really shows that teddy loved Mike tyson and it was hard for him to tell this story but he did because he believes in himself and this show great job by teddy and ken powerful stuff !

Love these.

You can hear the emotion when he talks about tyson, really wish him and mike could have done it all together. It would have been interesting

When Teddy Atlas talks about his skill set, abilities, strategic tactics & power, combined with awesome quick combinations he knows with that all behind Tyson he was the Ultimate Best. But he also knew what Tyson lacked which caused his undoing. Tyson needed a strong management training team behind him.

I think teddy has great insight on boxing. He clearly shows respect to all fighters except 1

Difficult to predict those fights. Think Ali was so versatile that he would find a way to beat Holyfield but it would be very tough because the fast pace of Holyfield is like Fraziers but with more skill and we know how much trouble Ali had with Frazier. Tyson vs Tua is also really difficult to say because Tyson wins most on knockout but I don’t see that happen with Tua but on points it could go to Tyson if he stands the punishment. Foreman vs Bowe wow thats one. Would be a slugger match and i guess nobody wins toe to toe against prime Foreman. Only way to win young foreman is at range moving being smart but i guess Bowe would go straight at him

Every time Tyson had to overcome in a situation he couldn’t. He was still in his physical peak when he fought Holyfield. Things got hard and he couldn’t adapt. When he was knocking out bums it was cute, but when he fought someone who didn’t back down and out skilled him, he couldn’t overcome.

i totally fucking agree with you ! ... 21 yr old mike tyson would have beat anyone in heavyweight history past or present !! .. if he didnt K.O them he would have won on point.. tyson was strong , relentless and would punish every opponent all through 12 rounds !! ..after he came out of prison he was tiring after 6 rounds ... Tyson had fear, Joshua said he has no nerves or nothing going in the ring, hence why he lost and even says he doesn't have the passion for it.

Good job Teddy taking control of the show instead of rehashig over old ground that you have already done. Despite 2 or 3 attempts drag it back when you already said i though5 we already done this. Thats the Teddy Atlas i grew watching and love to watch and learn from today. Great show both you guys.....

He could, Mike under Kevin wins were questinable by quality of opponents...2 biggest names he beat were retired Holmes and Lightheavyweight Spinks who lost the fight even before the fight started...all others were medicore.

Joe Louis was about 55 years old when he fought him, but do you question the greatness of that 50-and-0 supposed great? Note that Holmes was THIRTY-EIGHT, which is nothing for a heavyweight today.

@@flipflop4396 Between November 1986 and October 1987 with Kevin Rooney as Mike Tyson's trainer - Mike Tyson won the WBC, then unified by winning the WBA, then became undisputed champion by adding the IBF, and defended the undisputed status, and in the space of that year Mike Tyson defeated Trevor Berbick, James 'Bonecrusher' Smith, Pinklin Thomas, Tony Tucker and Tyrell Biggs, all five of those were either a Heavyweight Champion belt holder, or a top ten contender at the time of the fight - That is five Top 10 contenders (or Heavyweight Champions) in the space of 12 months, hardly mediocre opposition (or questionable opponents), some Heavyweights don't meet that level of opponent during their career and Mike Tyson (with Kevin Rooney) defeated those top 10 ranked boxers in the space of 12 months - once Kevin Rooney was sacked as Mike's trainer, Mike Tyson became more static, and didn't duck and weave like he did under Kevin Rooney, which contributed to Mike Tyson becoming no longer invincible.

Teddy always forgets that he knew Tyson Much better then any of these other fighters. if he spent the time with Ali etc that he spent with Tyson he would see both sides of these fighters. the good and bad. their strengths and weaknesses . he doesn't seem to realize this.

I..... LOVED THIS!! It's always awesome to listen to a truly ultimate scholar of the sport speak on what would happen in a mythical match. I soooo loved and needed this, so many people don't know boxing at all. They just jump on a hype train and suddenly that guy is the greatest ever, yet they never saw anybody else ever to be able to HAVE THE AUDACITY to proclaim that statement. Here's one I truly hope Teddy and the show does. Lightweight. Roberto Duran vs Julio Ceasar Chavez. My father is a Duran fan and for good reason. I love Duran. But.....Chavez at Lightweight and the style he fought with his infighting, using his head and being able to punch with either hand inside aaaaand the body work..... NOBODY went to Durans body really, Chavez would and Chavez at lightweight was hitting so hard legendary fighters like Edwin " El Chapo " Rosario, his body reacted to the body shots as if each blow was mini concussing his body. Like his brain went into survival mode and pumped blood from his body to his brain so he could maintain being in the fight. I forget what round it was but Rosario complained to his corner that his arms weren't working like they should and he didn't know why, he was having problems with his arms. That's power. Insane power. I know Duran was known as " Manos De Piedra " but many fighters were never the same ever again after fighting Chavez. Rosario was one, Meldrick Taylor was another. My money is on Chavez, my Pop's is on Duran, please, please, PLEASE do Chavez vs Duran at lightweight, please, thanks 😊

Great production, content, interviewer Ken Rideout, but most of all, great reminiscences by Teddy Atlas. I was IBHoF historian Hank Kaplan's pal (1919-2007), & Teddy carries on with tremendous historical solemnity!! An amazing episode 33. Teddy "Yogi Berras" all the time, such espresso (lol), but I especially enjoy "genuflect" in Teddy's lexicon. Mahalo (thanks)!!!

@soup and old clothes I agree with you, you know your stuff. Liston had the best jab with his 84 reach and 15.5-inch fists, it was like a spear that went through you and could even ko you. But liston, skilled as he was, learned boxing around when he was 27 years old. Tyson was too fast, would bob and weave, and throw combination punches. 85-88 tyson would give anyone a tough fight, especially when he was trained by cus d`mato and kevin rooney. Teddy left too early.

@soup and old clothes liston had a great chin and could take a brutal punch, but he went the distance against marty marshall, whitehurst, machen and joiner, those opponents are no mike tyson, patterson weighed 180+ pounds, he never weighed over 200 pounds, even tyson would have ko`d patterson in round 1, liston` biggest wins are over patterson and cleveland williams who was ko`d a couple of times, tyson would also ko patterson and williams, the fighter that would have given tyson problems would have been a 64-67 ali, even though I believe that would have been a 12 round decision fight

@soup and old clothes Interesting facts, ali never got ko`d and tyson never lost a decision. I am sure it would have gone the distance. Ali would dance on his toes clockwise and throw hooks and jabs to keep tyson away. Tyson would cut the ring while bobbing and weaving while using the jab to set up the combination punches. Ali would clinch and move sideways while faking the body punch and throw a left hook afterward. And when ali would do the shuffle, tyson would jab to the body to keep him away, lol. Imagine ali the night he fought cleveland williams/zara folley against tyson the night he fought trevor berbick or michael spinks. This fight would have broken any ppv record out there if it ever happened. Even the press conference would have been extremely funny.

@soup and old clothes Tyson only trained for about 3 weeks against tony tucker and still won. He had an ear infection before he fought quick tillis. He was sick before he fought berbick, james smith and reggie gross, and he still managed to perform. The problem with tyson was lack of discipline once he fired trainer kevin rooney. He stopped training as he used to do, the other trainers didn't understand cus d mato`s peekaboo style, and he also had a crazy lifestyle considering he was the champ. Tommy brooks, who became tyson` trainer later on, said that tyson only trained for 2 weeks before he fought holyfield, and he still lasted 11 rounds, lol.

Teddy is a world of good knowledge. Great guy to have as a mentor, not just in boxing or sports, but in life.

Roy could potentially stop Ray Robinson because he carried his power up to light heavyweight. Robinson did carry his power to light heavy but he didn't finish the fight because of how hot it was but Roy rocked Ruiz and staggered him.

@slipping into darkness bruh, I'm going to forgive you for that lol. Duran was already a legend before he fought sugar ray the first time. He was 55-1 going into the first Ray fight and he won and beat an undefeated ray Leonard. His only loss he avenged by KO. He moved up to middle weight and loss a close fight with MARVIN HAGLER. He then moved up to super middle and outboxed Iran Barkley who KO'd Tommy Hearns. He carried his power all the way up to super middle and was originally a light weight. Mammy can't deal with counter punches. His career shows it. Marquez is clearly his biggest obstacle and nemesis. Duran is 10x better than Marquez and a WAYYYY better boxer and counter puncher and hits WAYYYYYYYY harder. Marquez wouldn't touch a undefeated prime Ray Leonard.... But he did touch Manny, and it knocked him out. Duran is on another level. He will hit Manny and he will knock him out. This is a guy not even Marvin Hagler wanted to exchange with.

@slipping into darkness You really don't know much about boxing do you? There's a reason why Roach said he has Duran KOing Pac late in a fantasy fight at 135Lbs. At 21 years of age, Duran was already much more advanced than Juan Manuel Marquez - you know? The guy that gave Pac problems throughout his whole career.

@@RunningWild. If Duran vs. Floyd is at 135Lbs, Duran beats Floyd by UD. If it's at 147Lbs (specifically the Duran version after the 1st Leonard fight)...Floyd outboxes Duran and wins UD. But at Lightweight, Duran was a juggernaut - and there's nothing Floyd would have been able to do (I mean a prime Floyd struggled versus Castillo at 135Lbs and struggled vs a past-prime DeLaHoya at 154Lbs). A 135Lb Duran was so far beyond Castillo and DeLaHoya in terms of skills, defensive tech, ferocity, and sudden power you can't even see him. There's a reason he's ranked above Leonard, Hagler, and Hearns on the ATG P4P list.

The most significant point that most people seem to miss in terms of Tyson’s decline is that his support team (his good handlers and trainers) virtually disappeared once that great snake, Don King entered the scene. Now there was no one to keep a wild, undisciplined and out of control Tyson in check. His training and conditioning suffered, but most of all, his mind was terribly distracted! Once a boxer casts these things aside, he puts himself in a weakened and vulnerable position. He sets himself up for a great fall. As l remember it, the Spinks fight was Tyson’s last hurrah. That Tyson, nobody beats!

The most significant point that most people miss is that - the points you made say exactly what Teddy was saying … that when the going got tough in his career he could not deal with all that was going on and hence Tyson suffered … to be a great champ is to deal with what happens in and out of the ring , deal with it in such a way that you WIN IN THE RING . He was great but not as great as some people make him out to be . I don’t like admitting this , but Teddy is correct .

@Reuben Lees That's actually an interesting fight at 135Lbs...and Locche would make Duran miss a lot. The problem is that Duran was also a vicious body puncher, had a high punch volume, and had too much power for Locche...and his Defense has always been criminally underrated. Locche's defense was legendary, but his output would have been restricted...and Duran wouldn't have respected him. If Locche had power, then Locche would have beaten a prime Duran. But Locche didn't have power. I say Duran by UD at 135Lbs.

I've also never seen any footage of Locche having to work too hard, so I'm not sure how he'd do under high pressure. There might be more gears than what I've seen.
