Hey man! What a great video. I came to youtube looking for a review/tutorial for how to use my new radio and stumbled upon your video. I got this radio as a birthday gift since my dad and granddad used to listen to sw radio back in the day and I've always wanted to try it and have one myself. I also got some inspiration to get one from the 90's movie called ''contact'' with Jodie Foster which I highly recommend. I was mainly looking at my radio as an entertainment tool for listening to radio stations from all around the world but I'm thankful that from your video I've come to realize how helpful it'd be to have a lil radio like this in the case of an emergency. I'm on the west coast of Canada and was able to listen to radio Nikkei which is in Japan around 12:30 am Pacific time. Thanks for the great video!

Great review of the SW radio. Already have it in my wish list. I have 3 of the Baofeng radios, we use them on our hunting trips but I have one on my EDC bag. Being an Amateur Radio operator I am very familiar with handheld radios, mobile units and HF rigs used to talk across the country or world wide. Amateur Radio (ham radio) license are very easy to get now and I would recommend anyone to get a study manual, study up and take the required tests. No more do you need to learn the morse code, that was eliminated several years ago. Of course I had to learn it to get my HF privileges, I have been a Amateur Radio operator since the mid 90's and at that time it was required. Of course if everything goes south, it probably doesn't matter if you have a license or not. But if you get it now and get familiar with radio communications, building portable antennas and understand how it is done you will be set in an emergency situation.

I was in Germany for two weeks and this radio was perfect for the situation. ETM is a must-have feature and with the crowded FM band, this radio has superb separation on adjacent channels. (Sounds good, too!)

Awesome video LS. Shortwave capability is critical to survival. Like you said it doesn't have to be expensive anymore. IMHO shortwave becomes relevant in two different scenarios. A regional grid down emergency, or a scenario where one wants to validate news from local sources, with news from beyond the borders. SW is the awesome :)

Anyway, there's another reason to include such small, light radio in your but out bag - those three AA batteries it takes are supposed to last for two to three months.

The good thing about Tecsun is that they have radios in every price range. They make high quality radios. I like my PL390, which has a bigger AM antenna than this one shown here, but is about $60.oo. I also have a PL600 and PL660,as well as a couple of others. Kaito.US has all the Tecsun radios all in English, and also handle all the warranty issues for Kaito and Tecsun. They are really good to deal with, too. ‘‘This is an excellent review. Lots of good info. 📻👍🙂‼️

Nice job and excellent recommendation. I have a couple of these small Tecsun radios and they have good performance for their price or any price. Even if you are only interested in AM and FM and not shortwave you can't go wrong with this radio because FM reception with its DPS is about as good as it gets. And AM reception is much better than average given its size. I like that the reviewer mentioned censorship that can happen with the internet. While shortwave currently can be difficult for finding listening material of interest that will completely change when/if censorship becomes a problem. Shortwave radios would then be hard to come by. Get them now while you can. If you can afford a more expensive radio get one with SSB for listening to Amature radio. Getting several of them is wise and these small Tecsun radios are a no brainer.

Just as a side note to this, for others just finding this: At this time sun and atmospheric conditions are not good for listening to Short Wave, Doesn’t mean there’s nothing out there. There’s plenty. As conditions improve, it will be better. ( Most All Tecsun Short Wave Radios come with a “Long-wire” antenna to clip to the whip antenna. This will help a lot)

Wish I had seen this sooner. Got the ambient weather adventurer 2 model already. It takes a standard 18650 battery with the "solar panel" and hand crank. Gets the same frequencies with similar features.. Charges with a mini usb. Aside from the off grid charging stuff (it takes 4+ days in perfect sun to charge a dead 3400 mAh battery), it has the weather channels preset for scanning. It's a lot bigger and costs $30 more.

+Living Survival it's a simple 25 foot wound cord antenna which helps bring in FM and SW. Most people run it out a window and up a tree if possible. Also, another main function is to reduce or eliminate interference from RF equipment in the office like computers, screens, and power bricks.

+Living Survival Here's part of an Amazon review which was helpful for me. "This antenna is great for improving weak shortwave signals. It can make a faint signal listenable. As an example, listening to VOA on 17895 kHz from Botswana, with only my Grundig radio's whip antenna, I could not make much out. But with the ANT-60 the signal improved remarkably and I could copy enough to write a reception report, and received a QSL card from VOA verifying I'd heard their Botswana transmitter. It will *not* do much to improve a fairly good signal, but definitely improves weaker ones." Cheers

The PL310/ET doesn't cope with long antennas. 6m/20ft is plenty, any more & it overloads badly from adjacent strong sigs. I used a PL310 across the Pacific as a "representative" HF radio for gauging typical reception from a short telescopic whip antenna and it worked great with Radio Australia & RNZI at ranges 1000-6000 km.

I use my radios daily at work , so i put alot of wear and tear on them..3 have died after about 2+ yrs of service... Does anyone know a good replacement? has to be the same size as the PL-210 (and the 310 is about the same) to fit in my pocket I have tried to use the PL-310 and it doesn't get near the reception on AM that I need in the concrete building I work in...and I didn't like the Tuning methods...The 210 was and still is the best small pocket sized Tecsun made (well...that was made ...) Since you use yours a lot, I would suggest you break down and get something like the PL660,or PL600. They are made just a little better. Or if you can swing it, The CCSkywaveSSB is an awesome radio. Or a Sangean ats405. The C.Crane is a pocket size.

Baofeng radios are extremely affordable- Mine a. Bf-uv10r is Really a tri- band , it really does WAY More than advertised, for the money, I'll probably get another- I've currently have 3 TecSun radios, Good radios-I reccomend getting Hi-Cap Rechargeable batteries off internet- I used Walmart, their shipping is usually fast, the only problem sometimes with delivery carriers- Anyway, I'm 68 yrs., old, and live in north side of Chicago, Ide like to put up a outside di-pole or just a wire, but may be problematic- I remember Allied radio, their wonderful kits- This is how we learned soldering and electronics- I wish someone would bring back those kits, I beleive they would sell - Maybe I'm just nostalgic, but, young kids get everything already made dumped in their laps- there's something to be said for hands on learning- Anyway, get these radios while you can, as I beleive very soon, they will. Become much harder to come by - Also, aquire some 1n34a Diodes - Capicators you can make if you have to - HAPPY DX-ING ! 3'S

Just missed the most important part: You stop talking and show the radio working so we see what the reception and sound quality of it is. The time you spent showing both HT and the cell phone could have used it.

Living Survival - I like TECSUN radios, but this model Lacks SSB and a Selectable Tuner, your Reception can be Interfeared with a Strong AM/FM local signal, and if you are trying to DX (long Distance) then the Receiver is just NOT Sensitive enough to make out VERY Distant transmissions. the TECSUN PL-880 has Almost everything one would need, except for the ICOM R-30 which is better, and a MORE compact radio.

Living Survival - NOPE, if they can Censor the Internet, THEY can also JAM radio transmissions from Reception as well as Transmission. in WWII a High Altitude nuclear test resulted in a Worldwide communications Blackout (EMP). it would be a Simple matter of launching Several LOW yield NUKES to blackout communications for MONTHS at a time, over the Entire USA. and the Military (USA and Foreign) also have Dedicated jamming vehicles that can be Deployed for jamming communications and even Television. also, our Military has the capability of Disabling the GPS we use, meanwhile preserving the Military GPS capability for Precision strikes.

Living Survival - Ummmm, Shortwave Radios DONT Broadcast anything, they are Simply Receivers, they can Receive Shortwave transmissions from HAM's and International Shortwave Broadcasters. you need a HAM License to Broadcast anything on the HAM SW bands and you need a Extra Class license to transmit LEGALLY. IF you get a HAM License you can get a Shortwave/HF Tranceiver that can do both Receive and Transmit. and the Future ICOM IC-705 Qrp Tranceiver can do it all in a Portable package and has the Benefit of being a SDR Shortwave/HF transceiver. it can even be Battery powered by a HT radio battery and has a Backpack and a extended battery.

Did you really say......Get an Emergency Radio in case communications break down? Is not Short wave considered a communication....pretty much all radio broadcast? These radios will make good paper weights when the SHTF your talking of hits town & all radio transmissions are halted....

Living Survival - Scanner Apps are garbage, you don't have full coverage and the playback times out , limiting how much of a Transmission you get. you are Better off with a Digital Trunking scanner or a Wideband Communications Receiver. and I can set up my Whistler TRX-1 with a scanner APP and I can access the scanner even when i'm on the Road, though Reception is better in your Vehicle when Mobile.

Living Survival - the BaoFeng radios are a POOR replacement for a Modern Digital Scanner or a Wideband Communications Receiver like a ICOM R-30. as many Public Safety are migrating to Digital (NXDN) and other services as well, this MEANS the BaoFeng is of little use as they cannot do Digital Transmissions nor can they Trunktrack. even, IF you can only afford ONE Receiver, you are better off with a ICOM R-30 that covers 100 khz - 3300 Mhz continoius with ZERO gaps in Coverage, I can Monitor even my Neighbor baby monitor, cordless phones , wireless intercom and even Garage or Doorbell transmitters. IF you get a HAM License , you can communicate Durring normal times and Emergency BOTH. IF you are Planning on Relying on BaoFeng as a backup communications then YOU are seriously out of touch with Reality. the Lisensed HAMs are just going to LOCK you out of their Repeaters by changing their CODE, and ONLY the HAMs in a Network will have the Proper CODE to unlock the REPEATER.
