"Technology Won't Allow UK To Be A Manufacturing Superpower" | Net Zero Ambitions For Britain

The UK's leading business group warns that without a green industrial strategy, the country risks missing out on economic growth. According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), sustainable industries like renewables have seen significant growth, attracting crucial private investment.
Despite commitments to reach net zero emissions by 2050, setbacks include Labour retracting its £28 billion green investment pledge, while the Conservative Party criticizes climate policies.
Transitioning to a net zero economy requires changes in various sectors, with businesses like solar panel installers contributing significantly, adding £74 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) in 2022-23.
Peter Cardwell speaks with leader of the Climate party, Ed Gemell and professor of economics, Ralph Schoellhammer.

Ed's right about thinking longterm and making an effort to be at the front of the drive towards Net Zero. That's where future profits reside.

Cashless clowns probably trust this government but can you trust a future government when you’ve no financial control.

Sustainable industries are growing by imposing on the public additional costs and receiving governments grants and other support. What we are seeing is energy shortages and tripling of energy costs which is certainly holding the economy back and consumer spending is falling off a cliff. The renewables industry is a catastrophic failure which they are hiding from the public. As for new opportunities, yes but not here, they will be created in China.

If there was an opportunity, the business would have taken it. If you need government subsidies, then the project is not commercially viable. I agree with the goal of net 0 (the carbon dioxide levels are 430ppm now, up from about 300ppm pre-industrial levels, and I know that when they are at about 650-700 at my home, I feel suffocating. So we should definitely stop them rising. However, UK's only opportunity in Net Zero is unlikely to be manufacturing, I think it will be technologies and innovative finance. We just don't have enough labour for manufacturing. We need to do home insulation at a large scale and this may help to develop necessary technologies that we can then export. But insulating by itself is not a business opportunity. Britain is just so much behind the insulation technology, that it's a pure internal expense. Just look at the buildings in Germany, France and even Russia, Sweden and Finland. Thick walls, full of insulation. Ours are paper thin, old single brick walls. We need to catch up in this space first.

No, £70 000 for this sort refurbishment on a house is not 'vast' and extraordinary at all. In Germany home owners are facing costs from up £200 000. The only people who make the money is not the state, but the companies and organisations who initiated this crazy business plan. Another great hint that this new technology, which has been around for decades, is not as good as we're being promised, is that it needs to be subsidies by government aka ourselves, as the money is coming out of what we tax payers have paid in, in the first place. So stop fooling people, but pretending to be generously helpful. If this technology was so brilliant, cost effective and efficient, then everybody would already have it and there'd be no need to enforce the instalment of it. Just stop lying! Instead, be transparent and let the public know how much you have personally invested with these companies.
