I had like 20 boxing matches and recently had my first k1 fight against a muay Thai fighter. 4 things struck me; 1 he didn’t like the boxing pace and pressure I put on him. He was trying to keep me at bay with kicks and I just kept attacking, I could tell he wasn’t used to all the punches I was throwing and he was getting flustered and desperate as the fight went on. I gave him some serious concussions. 2 he hit me with a punch or two in the first round and it was noticeably less concussive to what I’m used to feeling from boxers, to the point where as the fight progressed it emboldened me to stay on him because I didn’t respect his punching power (which tbf, could have backfired on me). 3 The body of a Muay Thai fighter is an easy target for jabs and crosses because they stand square with flared elbows, but you must keep your free hand high when punching least ye get kicked in the face. The open target to the stomach is very tempting for kicks because he’s waiting to catch it. Don’t take the bait. 4 hands need to be higher because excessive head movement is too risky due to kicks and knees. I rolled and slipped on occasion, but got hit with some unnecessary punches because I had my hands lower as I do in boxing, but couldnt apply the same head movement under these rules. 5 leg kicks fucking hurt. It was ok at the time because the adrenaline but I couldn’t walk properly for about 2-3 weeks after. Train hard kings.

You're points in 1 and 2 are exactly what I thought Muay Thai fighters would have a hard time against a boxer. The speed and pace of boxing is something they can't really deal with. Boxing is simply the faster striking art, maybe even the fastest. I'd like to ask, did you win against the Muay Thai guy though? How will you deal with low kicks next time? Do you think just stepping back is a good defense for low kicks the same way it is for punches?

Thanks for asking and unfortunately not, i out struck him in every round but didnt throw enough kicks and didnt find out till after that punches score 1 and kicks score 3. I werent mad though because pretty much everyone in there including my opponent and his supporters told me they thought i won. It ls also possible that there was some bias as it was a muay thai/k1 event and i went in there as a boxer relentlessly throwing hands lol, but i cant be sure. I should probably have included ‘6 start and/or finish all combos with kicks’ in hindsight as if it goes to judges youll probably lose without them 🤷🏻‍♂️😄

@@General_Jist yeah if it's a Muay Thai/kickboxing event, I think the judges score kicks higher. Doesn't matter if you outclassed and outstruck the Muay Thai guy unless you knock him out with your punches, judges won't decide in your favor. I hope you can upload that fight man. That would be pretty interesting to watch.

Will do :) Also regarding leg kicks, im not sure checking is the answer for me because my style is lots of in and out movement. Since the fight ive been working on bringing my legs together and throwing a side kick when his kick has passed. Ill also probably fight in the opposite stance as my opponent more so they hitting my opposite shin instead of thigh. Ive always been a switch hitter even in boxing so its an easier adjustment for me than standing square

Now this is such an amazing video Gabriel, thank you so much, for making this awesome video, I think the MMA fighters, often, have their hands down too, like Sean O Malley, and they sometimes forget about picture perfect technique, like in boxing, it goes the same, for Muay Thai, they can get, a bit wild, with their shots sometimes, but overall, they are all amazing fight sports to train in, but boxing is the fight sport, where your cardio, has to be on that top level, to go full 12 rounds with an opponent in the ring, and in MMA and Muay Thai, you need more of a body burndown, and plus the conditioning of the legs too, and in Muay Thai is more of a up down pace, thank you so much, for making this amazing video!

Good stuff. My main comment would be that I’m not sure the Muay Thai hook is “sloppy” because it’s long as you show. It’s like that because you wouldn’t use the boxing type hook (closer range) in Muay Thai (use the elbow instead). If anyone is interested, I can ask the guy who was champion in both sports and see what he says.

@@zzzzzz69 I can ask online but sometimes things get lost in translation. I’ll see him this summer in Bangkok and be sure to ask. Lots of nights just hanging out so it’s easier then. Also, side note…that “sloppy” hook can also be used to push a guy into a low kick from the opposite side. So it can look sloppy but it has a purpose.

I've tried to "box" with all my weapons in muay thai. I'm on my 3rd month of not having any formal instruction so I can focus on fully realizing a gameplan I made myself. I want to "box" with all the muay thai weapons. That is to say throw them fast and chain them all together in the boxing fashion of throwing 90% of the shots in rapid succession and flowing from throwing to slipping to circling and throwing with defensive responsibility. If the opponent is far away, throwing kick combos like lead teep into lead roundhouse into switch left roundhouse finishing with a power leg teep and flashing the lead into a teep feint/lead check and then switching to take circle into my opponent's lead and then flowing into another combo. It looks nice on the bag but I dunno if it'll work in sparring and therefore in an actual match. It's fun though. Throwing elbow punches and throwing a knee combo where you use your hands so that there's no pause in between feels nice.

I prefer to have an assumption of doing MMA even while practicing pure kickboxing. Usually pure kickboxing practitioners have a shorter sense of distance than me, and that made somehow easy to find spots where I hit him and exit w/o get countered.. at least in a light sparring session. Having said that, I apply Muay Thai style in heavier kickboxing sparring sessions for safety.

It's difficult to pinpoint because of so many styles, but in general, Japanese Karate = snap kicks with ball of the foot (liver kick, front kick, sometimes to head) with full contact styles using lots of otoshi mawashi geri (Brazillian kick) or question mark kicks and high spinning heel. Korean Taekwondo = flashy jumps, high volume high speed kicks, relies on bladed stance with strong counter kicking. American Karate = Closer to Korean taekwondo/tang soo do with more emphasis on side kicks and lead leg kicks. Okinawan Karate = no kicks above the chest, lots of kicks targeting joints, stomping on feet and kneecaps, kicks to the calf and thigh.

To me, you describe a very old fashion muay thai stance. (that I love) a la Namtaotong Sor. Sirikul, Chaitchai Paiseetong etc.. By today standard, weight is more distributed in rhythm about 50/50 between the legs, where being light on the front leg belongs specifically to a defensive context to check/cross-check/teep. Same, with the arms, by today standards, it's more hybrid. Elbows does not flare that much anymore, and the guard isn't that long anymore. Also depends on context. Nice video anyway
