Tech Tips for Seniors: iPad vs Notepad!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It may not be a death match, but in this short video I show you how I use both paper notes and notes on my iPad and iPhone. It's a short video that might give you an idea or two. Worth a watch.

I am 61 and my Dad also carried a notepad and pen in his shirt pocket all the time. In fact, he is 84 and still does!

When I visit customers, I carry a notebook to record key points from the meeting. Using an iPad (which I own and love) would distract from the meeting I think. Not to mention that if it takes place on the shop floor, it may not be practical at all. Plus, it's easy to thumb through the pages to find notes from previous meetings. I think there is a place for both. Thanks for your inspiring videos!

Agreed. So much of this involves how you need to take notes. I've used my iPad in meetings and it's ok. But for some reason I just like writing on a pad of paper better. I know it's double work, but then I add only important notes I want to keep to the iPad. Search on the iPad makes that a great use case.

My Apple Notes has a page for Desk Notes and another for Pocket Notes which I’d transcribe from jottings. My handwriting doesn’t yet work well with an Apple Pencil. Need to practice. Meanwhile, I’m dictating, but that’s not 100% and catching errors annoys me 8^). I like your hybrid system, but written notes bring back memories which I think are worthwhile.

Hybrid for the win!! I am 68, recently retired software developer ... Up until a year ago I always had a small "legal pad" for scratch notes, but then I switched to Rocketbook ... a notebook that has pages that work like a whiteboard with Pilot Frizion erasable pens. So ... less waste of paper. I take notes. Most are erased, but important notes I move to Photo Albums or Notes. This goes for "work" items as well as home items: shopping lists, short/long term goals/plans, and even with my new retirement hobby: sketching.

Sounds like a good workflow. I think so much of the utility of an iPad comes down to how people use it. It can be friend or foe. Thanks so much for watching!

It is convenient to have all your notes in one place. But your right pen and paper is faster sometimes! 😊

Kids my daughter's age do it all digitally. I don't think I could do that. Sometimes it just makes sense to write on paper.

I'll jump in here with a couple of recommendations. For general use, I have the iPad Air 5th generation. With a 10.9" screen, it's big enough to see everything well but not as unwieldy to carry as one of the Pro models. Plus, it's reasonably priced. I pair mine with an Apple keyboard (just a regular keyboard, not the one built into an iPad case) and use it in place of a MacBook. If you want more portability, the iPad mini 6 is a great choice. It's about the size of a regular book and easy to carry around. I have both the iPad Air and the Mini 6 and almost always have the Mini with me for note taking or reading when I'm eating or waiting for an appointment.

@@mikephotos225 That is the exact same setup I have. I keep my Mini 6 in my backpack that goes where ever I go. I also have an Apple Pencil for each. My Air also has a lte connection so if I am out of range of any WiFi I can use it without burning up my iPhone battery or cell data. Plus the mini6 is easier to carry in the door pocket of my car where I spend most of my time

Rich, this is a good video and in my experience (as an old guy too) a hybrid system works great. It took me a while to figure out what works for me, but once I did it became comfortable and I no longer feel conflicted over which medium to use. BTW, can you tell us what the notebook with the spiral at the top is, please? As a lefty, I would love this! thanks!

Fellow Lefty here - To me, it looked like a Steno Pad (Stenographer’s Notebook). I’ve used them for years. Before PCs, I had a boss who used two of them: One for a Daily Log and the other for ToDo/Calendar.

That works if my iPad's handy. I've done that on a lot of virtual meetings during the pandemic. But when my iPad's not laying around, I just grab a notepad.

Seems to me that there’s no reason to have to choose between the two. Lots of value in using the stylus on the iPad. Obviously, scribbling a note on paper is a convenience you wouldn’t want to forego.

My handwriting using a stylus is worse than my handwriting with anything on paper. I’m practicing, and look forward to writing legibly with a stylus.

Ah the more I technology the more I hate it. I’ve been around computers etc my whole life it seems. I’m 64 now and use an IPad because my handwriting is pretty much unreadable, but it’s always been that way. I don’t like them or want them but I have no other choice.
