I never even once bought a wide ski ! I am still skiing on '80 and '90 straight skis , 205 and up , and they are so much fun ... I control these skis and go anywhere . Look at '80 videos and be convinced !!!

Straight skis in powder are THE BEST! For my money the best feeling is when you sink to the bottom and float back to the top as you complete each turn. The fat skis want to float and don't give you the sensation of bobbing up and down as you bounce side to side. The fat skiers don't know what they are missing...

I’m planning on recommissioning my Volkl P10s and Early 80s Renntigers. What base edge bevel are you using? I’m thinking 1 1/2 to help initiate turns. I’ve been using 3/4 on my modern race skis.

I learned to ski powder on straight GS skis. Porpoising was a blast, getting that face full of snow when you sank down in utah powder was the best part

Thanks for the demo. It's the best! Good MA and fun to watch. Having patrolled and instructed on straight skis, I still miss them. The shaped, carving skis are easier but the straights are forever in my heart. Wish I still had my Rossi Strato 102's at 210 cm with red Look Nevada turntables. Hope to make Cragieburn Valley clubfield in August, Covid permitting and God-willing.

I have a young daughter in racing and I've borrowed her 27meter 185 GS skis a few times and absolutely love them. I grew up a hockey player and skied a few times as a kid with my aunt on her 'short' 190s and learned only how to do moguls on those things - I actually love hitting the crud in these things just going old school technique.

For the random person reading this: you gotta try it! In addition to what he went over in the video, high-speed groomers are amazing. The torsional rigidity from the narrow width throughout the ski means that it actually does have a "self-steering" effect. It's not the "on-rails carving" self-steering you get from from shaped (modern) skis that slowly changes your direction of travel as you ride the rails around turn, but instead with enough "steering" (that is the "on-edge pivoting" of continuing to turn the skis against your direction of travel while you ride out the lower half of the turn), being longer than the tail (and loaded with "pressing-the front of the boots" you might have heard about from the old days) the front half of the ski will get a lot of grip as it moves on-edge but not totally "on rails" and will thus catch with firm force that slightly increase that steering effect. It's a wild feeling after growing up on shaped skis and really makes the old sticks both fun and interesting exercise for the technique aficionado.

I used to scavenge the ski shops for bargain race cut skis in the 70s. I could get anything over 200 for less than $100. Longer skis came back in style by the mid-80s. I still have a pair of pink Volkl P9s. They were hard to keep on the snow in the bumps, but man, what a ride on ice!

When I tried my dads old straight skis, I found it easy, but I think it was because I grew up doing knarly downhills on nordic skis, which are basically edgeless straight skis.

I still have 200 cm Hart Competitions with Marker roto bindings from 1971, but I've been trying to figure out the best way to hang them on my wall. It's kind of funny, I never thought of them as stiff, but now when I hand flex them they feel like a 2x4.

Thanks for posting this. I bought three pairs of straight skis on flee markets this past fall. Paid less 5 dollars for the three of them. I have a past as a ski racers and i enjoy skiing straights as much, or even more, than my racers! I recommend everyone to wax and sharpen the edges of your dad or grandpas old skis. You will have more fun than you think! Remember, skiing was fun back in the 80:s aswell!

Key point he said. Straight skis will make you a better skier. I have 70% decided to go back to straight skis this year for all the reasons he pointed out. The new shaped skis put you in a beginner ski stance. Straight skis can go anywhere it is all about technique. There is no better look than to see a good straight skier coming down the mountain with his feet glued together.

Uhhh I skied on K2 180 straight skis before!!! (I’m 5’3”) - i skied it in bumps, giant Solomon, and slalom turns. And I have to agree with everything he saying ! It makes shape skis seem like cheating… with the ski doing half the work for you. That’s why some of the old teaching techniques are outdated. Teaching skiers to wedge in shape skis and using varing size of wedging to control speed, is absolutely ridiculous. A shape SKI will do the work for ya. So just teach people to work with the ski. Parabolic shapes skis were developed in 1992. At that point teaching technique should’ve been updated to starting with a parallel and abolishing the wedge that is counterintuitive to what your legs or shape skis do. Wedging can cause injury.

I had to buy an old set of straight skis because they were much cheaper and i had no money when i did ( students will know) I struggled for 3 or 4 seasons to "get good skill level problem", get good as in : Don't fall, don't cross legs, do some slalom, etc. I had bought a 2.1 /2.2 meters long skis, heavier than cast iron... Last year i had to rend a pair of carved/ing skis while away from home with my friends. Needless to say they were impressed by how good and fast i was compared to them, and i was impressed also : everything was so much easier. No, i will not switch, i will keep my straight long heavy skis :)

Tlbest thing to do if you dont know much about skis would be to take it to your local ski shop. Get them to check the bindings, flex of the ski and edges are all still in working order.

  • @monkmchorning

A lot of shops won't touch the bindings if they're older than the techs working there. I back the release tension a couple clicks and practice a few releases on the living room rug. Then I ease the tension back up. If I can twist out of them in the house, they'll work on the slope.

In the bumps the big sidecut works against you. I run a pair of Hart Fusions for most things (including moguls). They don't work well in crud or deep snow, but are stable in everything else.
