In the 1980’s, I worked at HP on those old voltmeters. They were, as you say, very sensitive to temperature. With many of these instruments, our solution for alignment was to use a spare top cover, with holes drilled into it directly over the calibration pots. This way we didn’t even have to remove the top cover to align the unit. (Spare top covers were easy to come by back then; I wouldn’t recommend drilling holes in any covers now!) It sure is great to see these magnificent old units still functioning, with a little TLC, after half a century!

When I am doing my repair videos I just use a folder system on my computer, one for each repair, so even if one gets interrupted I can just add more footage to it and finish it when I can get back to it, also very handy for referring back to in case the memory gets a bit hazy, as can happen sometimes if I’ve been waiting a month or so for parts to arrive.

Hi Mr Carlson I really enjoy your videos keep up the great work. Once this pandemic is over I look forward to joining your patreion channel but at the moment it is just not possible. I would like you to show more of the soldering and testing. Your videos are very helpful and well done and thank you for what you are doing it takes a lot of time I am sure but I want you to know that it is appreciated. Stay safe and have a great week sincerely your friend Donald Hiscock.

I have quite a few HP oldies (analyzer and signal gen) and I know that back in the days they sold special covers with holes right above trim pots to overcome temperature stability problem now we have to try our own way to do so. I like this new format a lot keep it up! thanks for sharing :-)

I'd love to see more of these, though all of your videos are a treat. It's rare to find someone who can teach so well in such a calming way. (I just need to do better on the learning part, since most of my parts repairs still don't end well. That's why I'm hesitant to change the cord on an old Sunbeam automatic toaster I picked up months ago even though I have all the new parts. Soon though.) Thanks again.

If I had the electronics knowledge Mr. Carlson you have in your pinky I’d be thrilled. Just starting out, but I enjoy your videos when I get time to watch. Cheers from North Pole, Alaska!

Another great video Mr Carlson. When I studied electronics back in the 80's I was told Vacuum Tubes were confined to the history books. For new products that may be true however after watching many of your video's the thing that strikes me is how electrically robust some of these Vacuum Tubes are especially when compared to modern semiconductors.. Many thanks for your very informative and enjoyable video's Mr Carlson, 73's de M5AXA

Hi Paul - Thanks for the general 'run-thru' of the HP DVM - Interesting how the 'Boffins' solved, with accuracy the technicalities involved when there was none of the components that we have today. - Enjoyed. 73, de Tony in S-Africa ...
