    That turn signal is a work of art (much like the whole car). Sad to think that chrome as a material is now being banned, and pretty soon it won't even be possible to have existing metal re-chromed.

    Boy can auto electrics drive you around the twist, probably because so much is burried in the chasis and you have only access to small parts at a time. That and that bulbs, especially the halogen type act as shorts when cold, and that the designers somtimes rely on that, as shown in this vid, can confuse many as all you see with a test meter is lots of wires with earths on them. In auto work a test lamp was often your best friend, however times are a-changing and LED lamps show up totally different to test gear. You think your finally good with all this then someone puts a Telsa in front of you.....

    Is your garage near an intersection with a traffic light, or do you have an operating traffic light in your garage as decor? I see the reflection of its color cycle in what looks like the air cleaner cover of the engine when you're in the driver's seat, and I thought that would be pretty neat if you had some in your garage just for ambiance.

    Some of this crazy wiring is because if you turn on the hazards both panels flash along with the exterior lamps. Also most older American cars used the same tail lamp bulb for brake lamps as the flashers, they had to come up with ways to isolate the circuits. Nobody wants the panel lamps to come on when you step on the brake. Many manufacturers came up with goofy ways of making it all work.

    Not not aware of any modern vehicle that uses a flasher element. Switched by an electronic module , often a body module. Old style flasher units all went away in last 20 years

    Yep, MANY modern vehicles have the "flasher" built right into the BCM, and then the "click" of the now silent, solid-state flasher is a canned audio file that is then routed through the stereo amplifier and finally through the speaker system. Sometimes through a seperate speaker in the dash, or many times just the drivers door speaker. SO unnecessary in my opinion. Just GIVE us the usual flasher can.

    it is very satisfying when all the hard work you've done works, well done!!! as a retired union electrician, whether it is 22 AWG or 4 AWG or 00 we strip wire. the only bit I would like to add is that if wire is a single conductor, it is wire and not cable, and it matters not if its stranded. mike

    That Olds Rocket 88 is fabulous! Love what you did with the turn signal as well. I bought a solid state replacement flasher for a 12V system in my 1994 Mazda B3000 (Ford) a few years back, and i like it, but it's nowhere near what you've developed!

    Nice job! I'd get a touch more creative with your indicator lights and current sensor. Use a comparator and potentiometer to set a minimum current to blink the indicators. This way, if one of the bulbs burn out. The indicator doesn't flash and now you'll know there's a bulb out.

    When I was a kid in the late 70's we had an old 50's Olds that we used as a run around the back roads / fishing car. It was considered a junker back then, but it ran good enough to get us around the countryside and into pastures. Turn signals never worked on it, we wired them together and just toggled the stalk if we needed to make them flash. This was in the middle of farm country so there wasn't much use for the signals, but even back then they didn't work right. LOL Man, what I wouldn't give to have that old car today. Great video, thank you!!

    Great video as always. Thanks for sharing. Thumbs up by here. KZread's thumbs-up is damaged. We can't see or can not know when is on or off. The only "button" working correctly is the "dislike". I'm using Chrome on Windows 11 (just for know)

    Sweet ride, Mr. Carlson..!! This was a fascinating introduction to the complexity of even simple electrical systems in vintage cars. I have to say though - If I can see that something is flashing at the back of your car, regardless how unbalanced the timing is, the fact that you did bother to signal a turn or lane change is all you need to stay in my good books.....

    I'm guessing that if you stuck a 12V car battery on the input (assuming that the input could take 12V) that you would get 220VAC

    Not sure - but I'll bet a *Raspberry Pi" microcomputer could also perform the "blinker" function.. (eye-roll)..

    Yes, but without the current sensor, relay driving circuit, and passenger lamp driving FET, now we are back to the same size, maybe even bigger.

    A perfect example what is wrong in this country today. Perhaps you could desgin an electronic thermostat for my flat iron. Why make a 2 wire circuit so difficult. Basic ohms law. Thanks for your time. Pete in South Carolina

    Another interesting artifact of this circuit is when hazard warning lights were introduced with this existing system, the dash arrows would not illuminate. A secondary red dash lamp was used along with a dedicated flasher.

    Thinking like an engineer, what looks at first glance like needless complexity suddenly appears as elegant simplicity when you include the hazard switch in the circuit. One push-pull switch and a latching center-off SPDT to satisfy that truth table, plus the auto-cancel mechanism in the steering column - whoever came up with it deserved every penny they earned from those patents.

    Paul you have a killer lab.I like your SS replacement for the tung sol flasher. Very interesting, but have you considered polarity protection? For instance if a later battery in the auto is replaced and the owner accidentally instantly reverses polarity. I would hate to see your device smoke.

    Ingenious solution. However my concern is that different humidity conditions in the car (e.g. when driving in cold and rainy weather) may severely affect the timing of the flasher, because of the relatively high resistance values in the circuit. I made a simple timing circuit for outdoor use once and it stopped working completely because of humid weather.

    The circle is exactly right. The lamp does not go out completely and returns to full brightness more quickly. The control lamp only lights up when the external lamps are on.

    I converted a 49 ford coupe to 12 volt and replaced all the lights with leds and then replaced flasher with a solid state flasher that needed a added ground and also had a adjustable pot for the speed of the flash worked quite well

    It makes sense that old flashers flash faster when one of the blinker bulbs are broken. But why don't they flash slower when you turn on hazard signal (all four bulbs in parallel)?

    Another interesting and probably unique project Paul; if you like a challenge do you think it would be possible to a:) design a circuit that only used the same three connections that the electro-mechanical unit does e.g. no ground connection and b:) could be stuffed into the original unit's metal tube?

    Built like a tank! I'd expect nothing less. I really like how you retained the original clicking sound. I have a cheap $3 Chinese made solid state 6-24v 50 watt max universal relay on my old 6v motorcycle, after testing several different cheap ones years ago I found a brand that worked from about 4.5v or higher so were pretty reliable on an 6v motorcycle with crappy electrics and battery. I bought 5 of them in total as I expected them to last about as long as the tank of gas but to give it credit it is still going strong after 9 years and the remaining 4 are still in a box somewhere.. but I think this winter I'll be building something like this as I do miss the original clicking sound.

    Mr. C. Now that the turn signal relay does not depend on the resistance of the turn signal bulbs, will you replace the car's filament bulbs with LED versions as they burn out? I understand that sometimes you may need to add a parallel resistor to the LED bulb so it draws a bit more current.

    The current sensor circuit looks for about 30 Ohms, if its not there, the panel lamps will not flash. I designed it this way, so if a lamp upgrade was to ever happen, even a small load such as LED lamps would trigger the panel lamps, and the system would act as normal.

    I just wondering If it's a single globe with seperate brake lamp filament and seperate turn filament? Or is the one filament for both turn and brake. If so what happens if braking during turn signals? But great design.
