That sums up lots of things you might not be comfortable with at first. It's good to keep it in mind especially when you deal with small companies where you will not always find HR and managers.

Really appreciate this video. Especially since I recently did it all wrong... Making about 20% below the reasonable baseline because I said numbers first and accepted their first offer (which was exactly the number I gave). You live and you learn, I guess.

Yeah, I've made some hilarious mistakes too. Once I actually (out of some kind of insane pride) UNDERbid the offer, after it had already been given. It's just so bizarre that I have to laugh, in retrospect -- of course it was less funny then. No one taught me how to negotiate this kind of thing, growing up. Like you said, you live and you learn :-D.

Heh. If you're in a big city or metro area, I'd recommend finding the market rate for your job and then talking to your manager to see if they'll make a market adjustment. If this is your first job, it might be OK to ride it out until you have a year or so under your belt, but there's no harm in asking. It's really expensive for companies to lose tech people right now, especially in larger metro areas where demand is insane. If you frame the conversation as "Hey, I really like it here, but market rate seems to be 30k higher than what I make here -- I've done project a, b, and c and I think that work shows that I'm a strong technical contributor here. What can you do to bring me up to market?" you might be able to at least get a *little* bit of a bump. If they underpay you for any length of time and you aren't absolutely in love with the job, just interview somewhere else and then leave for a better offer.

Hey Dave I'd like to see a video where you cover some of the legal obligations of being a sysadmin like HIPAA, PCI, etc.

Had to come here and have a look at the beach (heard at the podcast) :D In time; I guess I'd never get through an interview in the US. I'm born i Brazil, been living in Sweden for the past 10 years but I'm actually German in the spirit. Try to be as effective as possible so interviews are like waste of time for me. Both for them and for me. Once here in Sweden after one hour with the guy asking about beaches and Brazilian girls I was like: Hey, you know what I can and I can tell you what I can't. If we're not moving forward with this I'd better get going cause I might as well use my time with something else more productive. Of course I didn't get the job (they didn't have any job actually). Turned out the guy was interested in talking to me cause I'm Brazilian and he was curious about it. A few years later I met the guy i a very different situation.

Why the hell neither parents nor school teach these things?

These type of salary negotiations works in USA job market not here in Canada where 1 job vs 50 candidates looking for jobs. One of slowest job market in G20 countries

When I was a young IT tech. I had to negotiate to get to $15 an hour from the original offer of $12. After starting I found out the guy starting 2 weeks before me made $17 an hour. -_-

What about when their first question straight outta the gate is: as far as compensation goes, what were you looking for?

I’d counter with “what’s the range for this position?” If I really don’t want to tell them for some reason I’d say I want to know more about the role first (although I usually have no problem telling them). And if they get weird and push, I’d raise my ask by about 30-50k. If the recruiter or manager doing the phone screen turns you off, I’d recommend writing a quick email to the company about anything weird they did. Recruiting is hard and if their hiring mgrs or recruiters are driving people away, the company will want to know about it. Overall, just know your approximate market value and add a few multiples of 10k when asked about yearly salary requirements.
