Chantelle income equality, profit-driven motives, and freedom of enterprise are key to capitalism as well, and I’d argue its the responsibility of businesses to behave with those priorities, while regulation and federal government intervention is required for preventing monopolistic behavior. It isn’t Amazons responsibility to not become so big to where small businesses and consumers alike are so reliant upon them. Social and ethical responsibility is also a factor, but the hypocrisy and blaming companies large acquisitions of competitors on that company when a government agency approves those transactions is clear as day. While the drawing the line on “anti-competitive” behavior is important, again if the FTC can decide that Facebook purchasing WhatsApp or now T-Mobile purchasing Sprint, is ok, we cannot in turn wave our fingers at the companies years later, when it should be waved at the FTC and lawmakers. This may very well be failed capitalism, but the reliance on building that economic system should be founded through law.

Chantelle Actually, to the contrary, it’s pure capitalism, which itself is very flawed. It’s kind of why America’s identity as capitalistic should be viewed on more of a spectrum. Pure capitalism in a historical sense has always been identified as flawed due to inherently widening the gap between social clases, and creating financial inequity. Therefore our economic system today isn’t failed capitalism, it’s too inherently capitalistic, when we really need more government intervention. Karl Marx acknowledged that capitalistic societies will need to become more socialistic to survive, as pure capitalism won’t allow for sustainable competition and market equality.

These questions were terrible and uneducated. It wouldn’t hurt to understand what cookies were before asking a question directly in relation to its utilization. Just a bunch of leading questions, asking for a simple “yes or no” to questions that weren’t so simple. We get it. These companies aren’t innocent, and these CEO’s are largely the profit driven savages that US capitalism promotes and the FTC fails to prevent. By the end of this hearing, I feel it made our faith in our government and the credibility of congress diminish dramatically, for whatever that was worth. This was simply a chance to verbally abuse the rich, who’s companies are where they are with respect to monopolistic behavior because of the way the government insufficiently regulated this industry’s commerce in the first place.

Those questions made me laugh, people in the government are so out of touch with technology (of course not everyone). But it seems the ones taking action against it are definitely in this group. Also yeah, I don't like how they only wanted a "yes/no" answer, and was as rude to interrupt the answers by the ceo's. Again, as you say, the companies of course aren't 100% innocent and congress people brought up good points (I particularly enjoyed Mr. Nugese, as he was respectful but also had insightful questions), they should still be allowed to give their stance.

Goku17yen I also found Nugese’s questions to be fair and insightful. There is a clear purpose to these hearings, however simply because these politicians are on the clock, they feel justified in interrogating the subject into an unfair position. It just isn’t nearly as productive as this entire proceeding should be.

These politicians know nothing about running a successful business. They ask the most asinine questions.

3:20:01 this is not so simple IMO, not being an apologist for apple (they can definitely do more), but deciding which apps to approve or not is not easy, and its hard to lay down clear, hard and fast rules that cover all kinds of apps....there has and will always be some room for discretion/judgement in any decision...even in the interpretation of laws by judges! so its not fair to say to apple that they have discretion, because in any decision made, there has to be some element of discretion. if you automate the decision via hard and fast rules, there will also be many unfair outcomes. and its not practical because these rules would need to be changed 1000x to adapt to the fast-moving changes in the market...

It’s hard to know who’s side to be one with this one. It’s too complicated an issue to have sides really.

Codes can be altered without losing the framework. Maybe a rewrite is slightly more rational and realistic considering these "human codes", as "glitched" as they may seem, are still beings with lives and feelings. Turn up their sympathy settings maybe? Write codes (laws) that kindly suggest (read: force) them to support the Mom n' Pop businesses they apparently destroy. Alternately, change the rules for small businesses to enable them to support themselves easier. Perhaps those ideas are naive of me.

Congress claims they have been investigating these companies for the last yr, by doing what? How many everyday users did they contact to gather proof of the real way they conduct business. Did they post a notification across all platforms for anyone having issues to report what they were? Or talk to the dozen lawyers with class action lawsuits against these companies and their reasons? User questions is what should of been asked because they are still not being answered. There should of been explicit set of directive rules to answer strictly with YES or NO only, there's many questions to get through and a 5 min time allowed. There's no time to waste. No answer is the same as refusing. This could take a couple days or a month, based on your answers. Congress takes control of the hearing not the billionaires. The past 4 yrs of hearings have been nothing short of tyrannical sabatoge by Dem control members. They refuse to do the job that position requires from career politicians. As a professional with respect, decency, house procedures and to set aside personal immature name calling, derogatory comments, accusations without merit, not allowing a response, deplorable behavior fueled with hate. The tension couldn't be cut with a knife, more like a chainsaw. Completely outrageous and uncalled for. Lawmakers never passed any law demanding citizens to wear masks. Ordering a member to comply with their demand by beating a gavel is equal to an out of control infant tantrum. Clearly they can no longer do their job and must be replaced. This can not be tolerated in a Republic govt.

So is being successful a crime?

It's astonishing how respectful, friendly, and mellow the democratic representatives can be when the person(s) being interviewed aren't affiliated with Donald Trump. Wish we could have had some of this courtesy during the recent hearing with AG Barr. Watching that hearing, then watching this one...night and day difference. There are people who committed mass war crimes who were given a more civil hearing than Mr. Barr.
