That's an older M1A1 variant with a spare road wheel on the left-front roof of the turret. The newer M1A2 has an independent commander's scope in that position.

@@robmx2324 Not so. The A2 (even sepv3) has been sold to a number of friendly foreign countries. The M1A2 is, or will be in service with Australia, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morocco, Bahrain, Romania and Taiwan. The units donated to Ukraine were A1, which the US claimed had been upgraded with A2 capabilities.

Yes but the RWS is equipped with an IR sight so it can work as the M1A2's CITV, probably with limited capability.

I dont actually know which version of the M1A1 was delivered. The earliest are closer to 50 years old at this point. But the USMC was using some M1A1 variants up until a few years ago.

In essence what I said is that Ukraine could be using almost 50 year old M1A1s while the USMC had M1A1 versions in service up until a few years ago which they also could use. Those would likely be the most modern M1A1s and on par with early M1A2s. There are like 10 or even more sub upgrades to the M1A1 with the earliest being the M1A1HA and M1A1HC. Then there was the M1A1D variant and one purely for export. No clue which one is in ukraine.

It's sorta amazing how real peer to near peer conflict is showing how quickly warfare changes and adapts. A lot of these vehicles were designed in a different era of warfighting and I'm sure the Pentagon is watching very closely on Ukraine/Russia are adapting to the fight to inform new vehicle generations.

I do wish these channels would post headlines that match their old videos. So its a down tick for me!

I love my M1 Abrams, but they won't turn the tide of this war. Tanks are almost completely useless on both sides due to drones. The M1A1 wasn't built for avoiding cheap FPV drones. Ukraine isn't the only side that uses them to detrimental effect either. I just want everyone to manage their expectations. This isn't going to be a repeat of Desert Storm where the M1A1s had the advantage of complete air dominance. However I must say... How about them Bradleys though? Man those things are proving to be WAY more of a game changer than anyone initially thought.

The Abrams is designed for an antiquated battle strategy largely absent from the fields of Ukraine and modern warfare in general. Things have moved on, significantly. Sure, the Abrams is very effective in combined arms tank vs tank, as is the British Challenger but those type of scenarios are pretty redundant. Cheap, mobile aerial platforms have made it so. The British pulled the Challengers away from the front lines as 2/3 were quickly lost near Robotyne at the start of the counter offensive and the US has now done the same for the Abrams.

“TANKMAN”? Ah that’s a different hero. “Tanker” is the word some would expect.

It's been noted that these Abrams are great against Russian tanks, but not so great against quadruple-stacked mines. In fact, if you're in Moscow, go take a really close look at their lone Abrams... notice the hole on the side that seems to be trying to have been done by a heat round, implying it was hit by another tank... except it's missing the very important tell-tale signs of the dents caused around a heat round's impact. It also couldn't have been sabot, that doesn't leave a hole, it leaves a flowery breach... upon analysis by tankers, it was determined that the hole was welded after the battle to try and make the tank look more damaged than it had been. The Russians did a similar thing in public with the captured Leopard by breaking the undamaged turret after the battle. If you want the truth, stick to the whole truth and not the half truth.

The guy’s comment about needing more HE highlights the weakness of the Smoothbore sabot crowds semi religious mantra…. In the early days of the conflict they would waffle on that the British retention of Hesh for this role was flawed…… real combat between near peers has led to stagnation and rare tank on tank engagements….. Hesh or HE analogues are far more useful for the majority of actions. Britains shift to smoothbore needs to include a bigger mix of HE.

The UK's L30 series HESH round is not needed with the many varieties of Rh-120 DP HEAT and programmable munitions produced by just about every major arms conglomerate in the Western world. If dedicated HE is thought necessary, both,Poland and Germany have HE rounds for the Rh-120 series guns.

Better traction on roads. Less damage to roads. Less damage to the metal track over time. You only have to replace the rubber not the whole track. Less road noise too.

Last actual statistic report I checked...Ukraine has lost 7 or the 10 Abrams they were given.

I am unsure where you got your numbers, but the US sent 31 Abrams to Ukraine. From what I could ascertain, five have been lost to Russian attacks. The report was from April 26, 2024. According to two US officials, Ukraine has sidelined the Abrams for now. Any newer information is likely skewed due to the fog of war. BDA (Battle Damage Assessment) takes time, and the propaganda machine will always push one side over another.

So what if one is captured? Or two? Or three? They're older models, so the technology is older. And besides, it's expected that a couple will be destroyed, abandoned or captured. Nobody was saying NATO tanks were invincible. Are they game changers? Yes, they bring a lot to the table that the T-72 and T-80 don't. Are they going to single-handedly win the war? No. Please do some research before you comment next time.

Well, yes and no. The tank you see here was surplus, easily 30-40 years old. Sitting at home mothballed was, objectively, a waste of tax dollars. The US is using the Ukraine war as an excuse to offload its oldest military surplus that it would otherwise have scrapped, like this Abrams here, while then dedicating enormous sums of tax money into replenishing the surplus with brand new equipment. At least by sending this tank to Ukraine, your tax dollars are being put to work diminishing the capability and depleting the resources of a dangerous and unpredicable regime instead of wasting away.

No footage, no battlefront, no noise and smoke... Hollywood was better in the past 😂

What a bunch of nonesense. The 31 Abrams gifted to the Ukraine were for a long time not even allowed to enter battle. When they finally were allowed, 8 (1/4) were destroyed soon after their appearance. The same happened the moment the vaunted Bradleys were finally introduced. The war on the Donbass fronlines is not friendly to tanks, drones now ruling almost all action on the front, especially when one side has almost eliminated the entirety of the air defence systems of the other side. Abrams, Bradley, Challenger, Leopard...they all burn just as easily as the very old T-62, T-72, T-80 (etc) the Russians and Ukrainians are both using effectively, within the small space they can operate in in this new drone dominated battlesspace. Interesting development is the "turtle" tank the Russians are now using very effectively, but a solution will also be found to counter it soon enough.

For the specially developed there's factoid , Avdivka is literally couple clicks away from Donetsk. They are not fighting some random town , they are storming the capital of the occupied Donetsk region . And what's even funnier is that russian border is less than hundred kilometres further east .
