Tearing Down a Blown Dodge 5.9L 360 V8 Magnum To See Why it Failed this came out of a 1997 dodge ram 1500 pickup truck and the pistons are completely shattered along with several dropped valves broken adjustable roller rockers and metal in the oil pan

I’d love to see the truck be put pack together in an old school built fashion with some of those old school performance parts and original block(if it’s even salvageable). Either way I’ll enjoy see another old rare truck being put back on the road.keep up the awesome builds👍
I think it was over wound and ran lean at the same time. I can't imagine it would have ran after the catastrophic event. I'd bet it didn't run. I can't believe you can turn it over. Those cylinder heads may be salvageable. Maybe not. The engine block looks like you could clean it up, but I can't really tell from here. This makes me glad I never slapped a supercharger on my SS/T.

I think you're right. Revving these over 5k - 5500 RPM is pushing it faster than it was intended to spin. Stock crank is cast, pistons are cast. Cast pistons tend to not handle higher RPMS very well. Somebody probably thought they could get away with pushing it to 6k and.....🌋

@@Thundarr995 I've seen people rev Magnums to 6000+ rpms. They are just wasting time and fuel. The quit making power somewhere between 5000-5500. I always let the transmission make the decision when to shift. Back when my truck was new, I took it to the track to see what it would do bone stock. It ran two 10.33s (1/8 mile) 15 minutes apart. This lady came up to me asking what I had done to my truck. I told her it was brand new and bone stock. She didn't believe me. She had a 1997 Ram 5.9 shortbed with an MP computer, cold air kit, full exhaust, and maybe some other stuff. Her truck was running 10.50s.. She asked me when I was shifting. She was shifting it around 6000 rpms. I told her that I bought a truck with an automatic transmission, so I put it in "D" and let it do its thing. On her next pass, I watched her run a 10.16. She believed me then. She acted like I invented the wheel by telling her to just point and shoot.
Please swap this like you did the dokata. You should do a 2014-15 interior, engine etc..
Im thinking you should get another 360 and build it for the new R/T Dakota and throw the 5.7 from the R/T ram in the SST.
Reminds me of my 67 318 I scattered doing burnouts on the road. During the teardown, I found piston pieces in the lifter valley. Believe it was #5 cylinder, no piston, rod was disintegrated, top of rod looked like a beat up ballpeen hammer. Bottom of rod was hanging on to crank by one bolt. My right foot over rided my brain. Just a few scratches on cylinder wall. Wrist pin was laying in oil pan with middle (pieces) of connecting rod.
Damn! Thats wild. I enjoyed the tear down
I Watch all the videos love what your doing bro 🔥
Would like to see you stay old school and keep the Magnum 5.9, maybe HCI or even 408 stroke it.
love this vide, THUNBS UP!
Wow. That block was killed!! Great video! Scrap it! It's junk! It's amazing what a little pre detonation can do with a little bit of boost! Can't wait for the build of the SST!
Chevy guys “ it can run with no oil!” Dodge men “fucking magnums run with no pistons!”lol love my Dakota
Awesome 😎 video bro Stay blessed 👏🇺🇲🍻
High cylinder temp and nitrous and no piston ring gap. Hard 3800rpm launch and didn't lift till the 1/4 ended
By far my favorite video!
Good stuff!! I wish I could find one of those intake manifolds for my Procharged Durango!!
Yeah I thought it was just a bent rod. I wonder if it both went lean and the guy 2-3-2 shifted it. I wouldn't be surprised if that transmission has a manual valve body
Dam i am glad you were even able to make it home with that motor!! Gee wiz!!
Broooooo!!!! 😱 That engine is gone!! "Seems like I have low compression on cylinder #3" 🤣 Wth!
Great video as always.

@@BoostedMotorsports too short, get valuminum heads an build that sucker wonder what the weight difference is between this an the 5.7 i think with those heads on 5.7 are aluminum an your trans an hellkota driveshaft was paper mache.............lol..still no fuckin time slips from hell kota...........
thank god your on it finally...
Bahaha I know what’s wrong with it,I was about to comment that line and you used it😂😂😂 ejecto piston cuz 💥
Waiting to get the 408 stroker installed in my 98 ZJ. Motor made 448/528 on engine dyno. Would love to see you do one on a Dakota or an old Jeep
Worse than I thought but seeing it all stock with fast parts. Cool breakdown though
Should make a coffee table out of the engine block
Build two 408 strokers for the R/T and SST with boost.
“Piston Delete” 😂😂😂
Pure Carnage! Dude probably knew he blew and wanted to full send so he never had to spend another dime on rebuilding it
This looks like something John Mercedes put together that probably came apart. The first motor I bought from him the main bearings backed out so it wouldn't surprise me if something else fell apart from him.
5.9 magnums are notorious for pinging.. especially the factory omes in Jeeps etc.
This motor is not as bad as the 8HP90 that you blew up in the Hellkota.

Hahah you're not wrong 😂
Makes you wonder if they ran a very large shot of nos in it and fried those pistons til boom
Go nuts on it, all forged parts, detail & bore the block, and reassemble!
So, looks like we'll be building the 5.7 up instead? 😂
That is the result of valve train failure at REALLY high rpm lol. Seen it too many times. That engine was not built to rev like it looks like it was doing 😖

Ahh stock cam. Would have been reving too awful high with the stocker. Who knows. Yeah it's a total wreck though lol
That piston delete option made a 5.9 into a 5.2

Piston has left the chat
Keep the block if it's salvageable is it increases the value of the truck, if it's the original.
I wanna see that v7 on a dyno
Ring gap was to tite that pulled the ring lands causing piston to fail
I can tell ya exactly how long they ran this thing. Long as it took to ruin it 🤦♂️. Scrap and put a HEMI in it.

Haha exactly
That was crazy
Eric: "Water isn't a good lubricant!"
"Someone put the bring-a-trailer tune on".. ROFL
I never imagined it would be that bad. I’d scrap the block.
It’s a Wi-Fi piston
I Never Seen Nothing Like This Ever. WHAT 😮😮😮😮
I've seen many engines in this condition. All you can do is salvage what's still alive and start over.
Put the original 5.7 from the blue RAM in the white truck.
Keeper Hell the Rocker got a freaking hole in it the pushrod's pushing through it both heads or toast
wow someone had a bad day ..
possible crane, roller rockers..just keep looking for numbers etc,i was hoping it had aluminum heads...
Do the exhaust manifold studs on those Magnum heads (center 2 cylinders) penetrate the water jacket?
Remember them crappy 1.6 roller rockers the pin falls out of all of them.
Now available in the 5.2 and 5.9 magnum piston delete kit 😂
Looks like mopar performance rockers. Maybe they didn’t upgrade valve springs and floated a few. Could be overboost issue and/or lean to destroy the ring lands like that.
Im replacing my shorties with these midlengths. Going from 2 1/2 to 3 inch collectors.
I would keep for just in case clean it up real good maybe take it to a machine shop. 😎
To much valve float over time causes the springs to get weak and hang up touching those cast pistons which can break them into pieces....
I have never seen such a thing in my life lol😂
When lean is too mean and you use valve float as your rev limiter.
Are you planning on selling the valve covers?
Awesome J《☆》Wow Interesting🗣no holes in the block. A Hellkat powered SS/T RAM would be Kool🖖😎☮
Yeah a wee bit too much boost and detonation is what did that my friend.you seen on the one piston the ring land was coming apart..... probably had it spinning 7,000 RPM when it let go...... scrap that turd nobody is sleeving a 5.9 sell off the m1 seen them going for 800-1,000 $ sell of the headers 400-500$ and valve covers new they are 120$ through summit racing fuel rails are probably junk from water and oxygenized cast pistons will blow apart easy ..ahhh the memories of the magnum V8🤣😂...👍👌✌️🇺🇸🇺🇲

my m1 was less than 300 new from hayes chrysler in lawrenceville, ga..get a used holley strip dominater for 35 bucks or so an was better on a 360 we did it all to family car motors 360...solid lift cam, headers 700 double pumper, windage tray, etc, shifting a street 72 duster with cheap sig erson cam at 6500 r p m...an 1.77 or so 60 foot times with a 3.55 or 3.91 gear...all cheap in mid to late 80,s an kill mustangs an cunt maros garbage, they couldnt believe it...

headers for 60 bucks new or so...back then, blackjack...we won money with it all drag racing..
When you pull the timing cover you will see if it jumped timing. It probably floated valves, tossed keepers and dropped the valves destroying everything.
Dam. Thats definitely messed up brother... 😢😢😢😢 🤔🚫🧢💯💪💨🏁⛄️❄️
ran regular unleaded thru the week, and amoco 93 octane drag racing.
That was one of them 7 cylinder magnums 😆😆
Definitely detonation. But it tagged valves too. Piston pieces probably went through the intake and held one open? Or maybe too much boost on stock valve springs and held them open a little too long? Those rockers 1.6 or 1.7? Maybe coil bind? I’d only keep the block if you think those trucks will be valuable enough to warrant it?
I got a 99 5.9l magnum with 91k miles. Got it for 2800$
Just add Lucas and send it 🤣
Maybe those are cast pistons, too much boost?
Am need this intake manifold for my 5.9 $$
Might be original numbers matching block. Probably doesn’t mean anything, but in a muscle car, it adds some value.
Ah I missed that it was boosted. Yeah, stock pistons and boost are a bad combo on any engine. Even LS contrary to internet bs. Stock rods are forged and worth keeping if they aren’t beat up by tbe broken piston.
My guess is it snapped the valve head off the stem at wide open. That exploded the cast piston and sent it through the rest of the engine causing all the other damage. Only reason to keep the block is to keep it numbers matching if it does have a Vin stamped on it
He probably drove it to the track and drove it home lol.
Keep the block. Its numbers matched
Keep it
LOL....the ole piston delete kit. DAAAAMN SON that shit SPLODE! It's not how long they were running it, it's how hard. How hard do you run an engine to completely vanish an entire piston? Some beer holding was going on, for sure. Sent that shit full send mode!
are the big valve like 2.02 160 etc..id never go back with iron heads.....
Where is the roller from that rocker that had the valve stem sticking through it?
Looks like comp cams roller rockers. Looks like too much boost on stock bottom end. 2.02 or 1.97 valves would be aftermarket heads. 1.92 is factory size intake valves.

Yeah they were about 51mm which works out to 2”
What is the plan for the truck
Assembly error maybe but we all know hyperutetic pistons are not up to racing abuse. Rockers look like knock offs of old cranes.

Good morning is the M1 intake still available?
I need those headers and intake for my Dakota R/T lol
At Bristol, Tenn. Thunder Valley drag strip, I saw the Hemi Under Glass Barracuda blow an engine and when they towed it into the pits you could look through the block. The roller cam parts were literally just falling out on the ground. This engine reminds me of that one. Sorry for your investment going down the drain.
stock had lightweight dish pistons an were real sleepers////////
Any 360 parts your selling? Like that intake?
I guarantee that wrist pin perfectly fine
back in the 1980,s or sp holley strip dominater was better than m1...we found out...
Anyone know why a 5.9 magnum for 2002 2003 is for those 2 years only ? Trying to fix my 02 Ram . Thanks
Moon tune before it was cool, Cylinder 3 Piston, error 404.. *.jpg not found
The piston is jamming it up
How much for a swap Dakota 5.9 to hemi 6.4 engine
Too much boost without adjusting the ring gap? Hypereutectic Piston exploded. Novi will make up to 26psi,, considering stock cam and stuff, I doubt they every pulled the pistons to adjust the ring gap.
I'm going to find some holes and some Pistons even if you do find Pistons you may not that may be in the bottom of the pan that's a totally destroyed engine they're probably nothing left of it
could totally send it to the machine shop and get the block re sleved and redone and build it into a stroker 5.9 that could make lots of mopowa
Part # for the headers?
