Even better, it's a lovely conversation to invite a group into.

Facilitating a workshop on succession planning with a mix of field and office leaders...what are your candid thoughts on....the marshmallow challenge?! And then using the debrief to highlight the metaphors that exist related to succession planning? Planting that seed as part of the instructions (look for the metaphors) so some of the more senior/highly analytical leaders understand the 'so what' right away.

Hmmmm...this exercise is a B+ activity. Not bad, but not my favorite. The framing usually matters more than the mechanics of the exercise though. For some, I think it is a bit of a stretch...that said...if you make it clear that this is simply to simulate our default patterns of working together under stress, it can bring about some brilliant conversation.

Thanks for your response! I ended up going a different route. I asked participants to imagine they're the owner and president of a company and they're nearing retirement - the silver lining? They get to choose their successor or successors. I asked them to get creative and think outside the box and have fun with it - real/fictitious people - artists, musicians, actors, business leaders etc. Have a conversation with the participants at your table - determine who the successor/successors will be and WHY. It resulted in much better dialogue than what would've likely occurred with the marshmallow activity. Fun fact - Taylor Swift came up in all 3 workshops! @chad.littlefield
