I think this is because the guys from Khabibs camp including himself did combat Sambo. They essentially had hundreds of mma rounds before doing mma. They are the very few people who entered a new era of mma before it was popular. They figured out what worked and focused on in and threw everything else. They did this before the rest of the world did. This is why I think if applied correctly Combat Sambo is the best martial art for mma.

BJJ alone was sufficient 30 years ago when fighters didn't understand the danger of engaging in the clinch and being taken down but that's no longer the case now that strikers know the importance of maintaining distance and being able to stuff a takedown. It's like having a gun with no ammo, you need to be in the right position for the techniques to be rendered useful.

I don't even think this is the final iteration of MMA, there's still so many different styles. Volk gave Islam a run for his money (if he was 10lbs heavier... maybe it would have been different), so even Islam etc. has to improve his game otherwise he might get beat.. eventually, he'll get beaten but will be competitive and will probably win the belt back in the rematch or in the future. Light weight is stacked at the top.

Khabib’s team members have no gaps in their grappling skills. When I watched the One Championship grappling matches with sambo vs bjj recently I thought the sambo players would dominate the stand up and position. They seemed to me that they only had slight advantage. Those matches made me wonder if regular sport sambo players are incomplete grapplers the way most bjj players or wrestlers are and Khabib’s boys are the only one’s who have the whole formula.

  • @esamemad298

Well that's because brother khabib and his team aren't just sambo practitioners they are Dagestani sambo practitioners and I know a lot of people are about to snap on me in the comments right now saying that Dagestan is a part of Russia and they have the same sambo and I am not trying to debate that I just want you to Google the word Dagestan open the Wikipedia page that will show up look at the notable athletes section and you will understand what I am saying Dagestan not only has some Olympic freestyle and Greco and judo champions but they also have Olympic and professional boxing champions they have sanda kickboxing legends they have some very high level muaythai stadium champions they even have high-level practitioners of every form of combat they even started having more and more bjj practitioners and schools lately and they happened to be a very close community the way they treat each other for multiple reasons . so if you are a a sambo practitioner you get to train with all those people who all do different martial arts just like of you were in an MMA gym and you are a kickboxer and you need to train with a bjj blackbelt so they are basically doing MMA not sambo people say the difference is just the jacket but no in combat sambo you don't get rewarded points on striking aims to either knock your opponent out to win the match or get close to your opponent to initiate grappling so there is no reason to try and be a good striker when you are a some what decent one but when you train with sanda guys for example to drill your reactive takedowns or Muaythai guys to sharpen your striking you obviously need to be better and it's the same with every other aspect of the game if you are a very good judoka in sambo you don't have to be that good of a wrestler because in sambo judo throws are way more rewarding than double or single legs but if you go and you train with wrestling Olympic and world champions as we have seen both zabit and Islam do you gonna need to be a way better wrestler than typical sambo guys that's why Dagestani guys look so much better than normal sambo guys in any competition they get into it almost seems like they are doing a completely different martial art.

I counter that point (which might not have been your point, just my best guess) with Dagestani fighters would beat either of them in a BJJ, Sambo, Combat Sambo, or MMA rulesets. To reiterate and clarify my previous point, sambo guys are incomplete grapplers, BJJ guys are incomplete grapplers, Dagestani Combat Sambist are much closer to complete.

I am not sure if I call it wrestling since they don't wrestle folkstyle they did freestyle or greco. It's a style of grappling that is built from Olympic wrestling, sambo and jujitsu. What ever it is. Its the best style right now. We'll see how long it takes for someone to counter it. It's probably just a mindset of training so hard that no matter the style you are going to get beat by the strength and endurance of these guys.

The Judo rules are just weird what they restrict. Sambo seems very legit just very few do it so it isn't tested like wrestling. Every country has wrestling. Russia the only country that has large organized Sambo.

Its probably just from talking for long periods of time etc. I'm not being critical of it, just a little concerned and think he should get his throat checked if he hasn't already done so. I've been noticing this for a few months now but haven't seen anyone in the comments address it. Or, its 100% possible that I dont know wtf I'm talking about.

Gordon haven't fought a single fight yet. And his competition weight is one and half of the size of Khabib's fighting weight. One can not strike but can choke out the Mountain. The other one can lift and make smash potato from light fighters for 25 minutes and not taking the juice or not as much. The outcome would be mostly the matter of whose term they would fight under.

Reguardless, Makhachev stung Olivera with a punch before subbing him via arm triangle. Their grappling is specifically tailored for mma wheras bjj wasn't. Doesn't mean it can't work but the Eastern Europeans will have a major edge.

Sambo is more pragmatic than you think chael.i would say that most of the take downs and wall wrestling they do is from sambo. Old sambo had a very strong juso influence aka kano jujitsu before the name was changed to judo. So the sambo was based on a much stronger robust judo to the point that judo competition rules were changed because judokas with a sambo backround kept doing moves that caught regular judokas off guard

Jiu Jitsu couldn't beat Sakuraba either. Speaking of which, Chael, you've repeatedly said how Pride was rigged because the losers would be told ahead of time that they were to lose, but the winner wouldn't be told so it felt authentic to them. With that being said, do you feel all the fights between Sakuraba and the Gracie clan were rigged? I'm not sure they would've accepted being told they were to lose all those fights, so I think the fights were legit. Spill the beans Chael

The Gracies were loaded with cash for generations. From when they hired a Japanese Judoka to tutor their skinny kids in the early 20th century right up to the 90s (and obviously beyond). They were fighting to promote BJJ and once Sakuraba starting fucking them up, they fought for revenge. They weren't going to throw anything. Guys who were hurting for money would throw fights possibly; guys who were made offers they couldn't refuse from the yakuza would; but the Gracie family didn't throw anything.
