4:14 - If I am not mistaken, Anton (the dev of h3vr) has mentioned that he doesn't wish to implement real life characters such as humans into his game, as he doesn't condone the act of shooting people. Because of this, he has been using these sausage characters, as a way to minimize the "encouragement" of real life violence, if you will. It might've been a reddit comment I got this info from, I'm unsure, so take it with a grain of salt.

Its clearly not but see how it could be an issue with a VR game with hyper realistic firearms?

I feel like the tf2 side of the community is hearing this a lot differently to the h3vr side. What happened is that Anton made light conversation about adding tf2 weapons into the game, later valve said sure, so it's a nice little collaboration. But for some reason those unaware of h3vr seem to think this is some kind of vr 'update'? This is nothing added onto tf2, it's like calling Garry's mod an update to half life 2. The line "they've left all the actual development to a third party" implies the tf2 team sat down and said there needs to be vr, let's get these guys to do it, which is entirely wrong.

Yeah, this video is so dumb, it completely ignores everything about H3VR, from asking for the player models in the game (Anton doesn't want people in his game, because it would he called a "murder simulator"), to asking for multiplayer (the way the engine works means it would be basically impossible without an entirely new one).

To get more into the detail on why networking is an issue: the game uses a nondeterministic engine, which means that every bit of physics calculation involves a lot of randomness to make it appear more realistic. However this has the problem that physics calculations are really hard to fully replicate, so in order to make it work for multiplayer, the engine would have to be replaced by a more deterministic one that the clients of the game can calculate on their own, which would mean that pretty much every weapon would have to be reworked in order to fucntion correctly. Also, I think the reason we would have never seen something similar to TF2 models is the same reason we have Sosigs: Anton Hand doesn't like the idea of having humanoid characters in the game, as the game already is trying to be realistic with the way the guns work, and having humanoid characters could have its own big moral dilemma.

Non-deterministic? Is this such a big problem? Going into a more familiar realm, I don't think Source tries to be very deterministic either. Well, actually it doesn't even have the necessary mechanisms on client. Of course, transmitting the entire world state, even with delta compression is not cheap. But come on, we are talking about VR here. Surely if you can own a headset you'll have good Internet. Okay, I probably don't know a lot of stuff, never actually wrote networking code. But I've read a lot about it, so thats a thing or two I know.

Hey! Doesn't look like anyone from the H3VR community's popped their heads in yet, so I figured I'd offer a few corrections/clarifications: -This is NOT "TF2 VR." This is just "guns/tools from TF2 going into H3VR, with some theming to match them." The distinction is a very important one to make, because H3VR will NEVER HAVE NETWORKED MULTIPLAYER. You touched on Anton's statements on the subject briefly in the video, but really glossed over the explanation. It's not that the devs don't want to do it, it's that there is literally no way to synchronize all of H3VR's physics simulation events across more than one user at a time, god forbid more than just one extra. Anton described the amount of coding work it would take to add multiplayer as "as much work as building H3VR again from scratch." In addition to that, the sheer amount of data that would need to be sent and recieved for real-time multiplayer in the game's architecture would be ridiculous enough to choke even the heftiest network connections. As a personal note, why does H3VR NEED to be multiplayer? We already have Pavlov and Onward for that. I'd much rather have something unique and with a lot of depth that I can enjoy on my own time. -Valve didn't specifically CHOOSE Anton/Rust, as that language implies they'd been searching for someone appropriate. Rather, the idea was originally Anton's, proposed during a lunch break in some very early Index hardware demoing. What spurred the project was Anton finding the challenge of forcing TF2 guns to make mechanical sense and work in a realistic simulator to be an interesting one. -The reason that the enemies in Meat Fortress are the game's bots (the Sosigs) cosplaying as the mercs rather than having the mercs themselves is that Anton and Rust have drawn a hard line in the sand: H3VR will NEVER, EVER have humanoid targets to shoot, the reason for this is primarily a philosophical one regarding the game's purpose: it is about the mechanical fun of operating and using this wildly varied and expansive collection of firearms, and NOT about shooting people. Even the Sosigs don't get hurt when you shoot them; in-story, they are simply put back through a meat grinder and re-cased. Getting riddled with bullets is just an inconvenient Tuesday for them. -We will not be getting any additional maps for this mode, however the map itself (dubbed ar_rustbowl) is specifically designed with a lot of extra space so that different gamemodes can take place on it. Specifically planned is a proper scoring system for the current TDM mode, some form of Attack/Defense, potentially similar to the Territory Control gameplay of Hydro, as well as some form of point defense, which will be focused on staying stationary and simply fending off incoming bots. Just don't go getting your hopes up for more TF2 maps, that's not what this is about.

hi! im not a rust PR guy, nor do i actually work at rust in the first place. but i just wanna give some things stated in the review that i believe deserve a little more in-depth explanation. 1:11 funny enough, valve letting Anton (basically the meat of rust LTD, he does the coding, a little bit of model work and i believe he runs the company. also pun intended.) work on this project originated from him just mentioning it in a one-off conversation at a lunch break when they were testing the gen 1 knuckles controllers. it eventually boiled down to what we see here today. 4:14 Anton has specifically stated that he does not want any human resembling Bots in the game to avoid controversy. to essentially sum it all up: this is a dicking-around-with-guns-in-ridiculous-ways simulator, and he's trying to stray from as much of the "violence in me vidya games" as possible. Can't really blame him seeing as this is the only game of its kind that allows you to use guns with this much detail so far, and that's a lot of fingers that will be pointed at said developer if anything happens. --- disclaimer: im not Anton, this is only my understanding of why multiplayer can't be, i still need to look a bit further into this. when it comes to multiplayer. H3VR--as much as it pains me to say this--will not have multiplayer because it *cannot* have multiplayer for a multitude of reasons. 1: the main thing that separates this game code-wise from Pavlov, Onward, contractors, and many more games is because unlike those games, H3VR physically simulates literally the entire gun. from the recoil to how the gun even function's, im talking: having the bolt go back. having the bolt go forward. and having the bolt take a round from the magazine and inserting it into the chamber. the games i've mentioned merge all of this into an animation. *and thats just the operation of the gun itself.* the recoil in these guns are not an animation, they are the gun physically simulating itself going up and then going back down, which allows them to be interactable with the environment, as opposed to the other games which need to be extremely simplified to allow for multiplayer. the fact that the guns are so detailed allows them to feel so nice and behave as they do. but it comes at the cost of not being able to replicate it within an environment that allows two people to play at once. *but wait*. *there's more*. Because thats just the guns. i could go on and on for ages about why the AI is extremely hard to implement in a multiplayer environment, or how modding is a giant can of worms that any sane Anton working on a dreaded H3VR does not dare touch, but i think you get the point. if you wish to learn more about this topic, Anton himself has a youtube channel he uses to upload anything rust related. and he uploaded a lengthy video a little back that explains why multiplayer cant be: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZOe1sV8fc28dpM.html. its jammed in with other content like E3VR, but its there. --- with that said, this was a really well made video and i enjoyed it a bunch! i'd love to see some other things like this on your channel along with some tf2 content as well.

You know, you could simply copy player events (head/controller novement and button presses) to every other client, which each runs its own gun simulation code. Unless they use randomization, this should work to allow multi-player.

There is zero chance of a jam in any of the weapons so what you're saying about every aspect of the gun being simulated is very incorrect. It's purely physics of the model itself, none of it's functionality is driven by physics simulation aside from the obvious putting a magazine in and racking the slide. These things don't physically make the weapon function though.

  • @steven.2602

    @steven.2602

@@xionxinx for clarification, i didn't mean that the guns use an actual physics simulation to function, but code wise, guns act very similarly to how they would in real life, just without the jamming and all that, the only thing that is actually physics based is the recoil of the gun AFAIK.

You can save the rocket launcher on your shoulder, just put it up there and press up on the touchpad if you have vive. It doesn’t show up as green because you can’t see it but just test and make sure you did it by dropping the rocket launcher and seeing if it goes back to your shoulder. Please like so that he can see this so he knows in the future. Edit: I copied and pasted this under his comment

Ouch, looks this video is going to spread a lot of false or inaccurate info about this update and it's development. The video is good in quality and it's entertaining, but it's worded poorly either due to misunderstanding or a lack of research. Still a very well put together video though.

@@random_idiot a lot of other people have already pointed it out, thats why. A lot of the h3 fans who found this vid all came from the h3 discord, where this guy is a mod, so he just commented this, as a bajillion other people already made big lists of some of hte misinformation in the vid.

@@random_idiot we are just super DONE with explaining, go watch the devs own devlogs if you wanna see why the vid is misleading. Look for the episode where he talks about multiplayer, and look at the episodes where he first reveals meat fortress.

RandomIdiotWhoCan'tFindAName actually, I think he worded it really well. It appears to me to be less of criticism and more of just his thoughts on the video.

I'm pretty sure they have the sausage models to stay in line with the rest of the game, and I've heard some people, like veterans, don't like shooting actual humans in VR, so I dont think it's an issue not having the real TF2 character models

  • @SydneySininen

yeah tbh l could see that being a problem. Sausages are fine imo, but it'd be nice if they had like different shapes for the clases, like a hot link for Heavy and a smaller hot dog for Scout
