Heron marked swords are an ancient way to signify the wielder is a blademaster. This predates the Seanchan ancestors leaving the Westlands centuries ago, so it's why the custom is present on both sides. They have to be earned, hence why Turak said "let's see what it takes to earn it on this side of the ocean". He thought Rand was another blademaster and challenged him to a duel, but Rand wasn't having any of that. Rand's dad earned his blade while fighting in the Aiel war 20 years back.

Ishamael gave up at the end, thats why he just stopped firing and stood there He never wanted to kill Rand, he could have done that a 1000 times. He wanted Rand to join him His logic at the end is that he will return eventually so might as well wait for that. He knew he had lost when Rand's shielding broke and all his friends were there. He never would have turned Both Ishamael and Lanfear didn't want to harm Rand for their own reasons. The rest of the Forsaken are nowhere near as kind

Ishy has been feeding Matt lies that dig into his insecurities. When Matt blew the horn (in the TV show version), Matt was given the truth/knowledge of his past lives, which made him realize he was a good person rather than the person Ishy was trying to convince him he was (lies + tea). He also understood he was not bad/unworthy person he though himself to be most of his life. That he might even be a real hero. As a side note, the end of season 1 (when Barney Harris left and the COVID limitations were in place), forced quickly last minute re-write to the ending. Those changes also impacted season 2 very significantly - not only for Matt, but everything else (if you read the books, you may get a better understanding at how large a change this forced). They basically had to go through a whole season of slowly rebuilding Matt by figuring out a way to hit his major character development points to fit into the (new) version of Season 2. But now Matt is truly and fully Matt again. And that should be really fun in season 3.

In the Seachan society, NO ONE knew the truth about the Sul'dam being able to channel. This revelation will cause A LOT of problems for them if it gets out. Sul'dams don't know that they could channel because they are not natural channelers. They are the women who can learn to channel, but they are extremely weak. This is why it takes them years to learn how to touch the One Power. Once they do, they can become a Sul'dam.

  • @eeshanchaudhary30
    @eeshanchaudhary3010 ай бұрын

Also if you notice, the weaves used by Moiraine are far more complex and take a lot of time and hand moving (in the books it is explained that some weaves, especially 100 weaves of the Aes Sedai testing are so needlessly complex that some of them cannot be done without using hands as a focal point). I think it compensates for the lack of Moiraine’s raw power. If you remember correctly, in S01E01, Moiraine launches multiple medium sized fireballs on trollocs almost instantaneously, which implies she was relying on raw strength rather than complex weaves. Also when Egwene is fighting Ishamael, she is using a broad range defensive weave rather than an offensive weave like Moiraine used in S01E08. Had she tried attacking Ishamael rather than just defending, it would have ended as badly as it had for Moiraine if not worse. Also shield used by Egwene was made of fine, streamlined flows. In books RJ explicitly says that dexterity can make up for lack in raw power. . . . . . . . . MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD It is often mentioned by her teachers (both Aes Sedai and others) that the remarkable pace at which she learns a new thing is amazing. And Egwene is one of the most if not the most dexterous weaver of one power in white tower by the end of the series.

@@joeleek9976I agree with you halfway. The power levels or power scaling is given in the Wheel of Time Companion book which is kind of an annex to the main story. And power levels are consistently described in the books as well. However, outcome of battles between channelers are rarely decided by power levels alone. It often also incorporated skill/dexterity, creativity, experience and even element of surprise. I could quote many examples from books where low ranked channelers defeated very high ranked ones but I don't know if you have read the books so I don't want to write major spoilers in the comments.

A little triva: The hero of the horn on the left who said he has fought countless times with Mat is King Artur Hawkwing (the legendary King Arthur). 2000 years ago, he conquered all of Randland. Not satisfied, he sent his son and a fleet of 300k soldiers to conquer another continent across the ocean and were never head from again... till the end of season 1 when they returned as the Seanchan. Historically, masters of the blade wielded a heron marked blade as a sign of their prowess with the sword. Since the Seanchan were originally from this land, they still have the same custom of heron marked blades too.

From what I understand, the change of the actor still affected Mat's stotyline even in season 2 because the major rewrites they had to make for the end of season 1 meant that Mat wasn't narratively in the place he was originally supposed to be at the end of season 1, which meant they had to rewrite a lot of his season 2 storyline as well.

Yeah, sometimes prime fucks up the subtitles it's happened a couple of times in The Wheel of Time, if I recall correctly. I can't remember which exact episodes but I remember it happening in season 1 at some point...Where the subtitles are just slightly off but also you can totally understand why someone may have thought that the actor was saying the other phrase cuz it's similar kinda. And we might catch it because we've listened to their voices potentially more of than someone who was just doing the captions for the show.

Aisha your channel dropped in my recommended feed a few weeks ago. And I just have to say what a gem you are! If you aren't a psychologist woman.... damn you should be! Maybe you should do a TedTalk therapy segment for all us WoT book readers because, once again damn, you have a gift delving into the psyche, trauma and motivations of characters you have just met. So thank you from a book reader to a non book reader - you have a sense of these characters and their story underwhelmingly mastered by many in love with this story. Nothing to spoil anything for you below, just a couple of things already established in the show. The Sul'Dam and Damane - when either dies the connection is broken. However the effects of a double collar situation was never explored in the books. Remember when Siuan told Rand in E7 he wasn't a spoke in the wheel he is "the water that turns the wheel itself, or shatters it"? Ishy's desired outcome is shown several times so far in the show: one is during the tea scene he asked Mat "wouldn't it be great to just stop it" (paraphrasing there). Ishy wanted Rand to shatter it and stop the endless cycle. But being the master you are you picked up on that toward the end. S1E1 when Egwene gets her braid to signify she is a woman. The show established that rite of passage as a very big deal in the Two Rivers and very much tied to identity for women in that community. Renna cutting Egwene's hair & stepping on it with her bad ass boot was a very 'bitch now you REALLY gonna die' moment. That was the slice heard round the globe for book fans. The fire dragon was the declaration proclaiming the Dragon Reborn.

"Dark Nynaeve Era Loading and I'm for it!" You're not the only one. Mat's parts of this episode were my favorite, because so much of it was unexpected (not expected by me, anyway). And his solution to the dagger problem was very much him. "Lan, you better stop being so damn hot!" Not gonna happen. I've been wondering all through what the purpose of the daughter-heir was. She seemed like an extra character, and good writers don't have extra characters, not with that much screen time. But, in a burst of sunlight and soft focus, I think we can see the road ahead. 🙂

Love your videos so much! Just wanted to fill you in about Ny’s block. Nyneave’s block is an actual literal block. She can’t consciously choose to channel at all because of it. It’s actually pretty common in channelers that don’t realize they’re channelers until later in life. For Ny, it is totally based in her fear of the Power, but it’s not just Ny being afraid in the moment. The Block is worse now bc of what happened with Ryma. She finally met an Aes Sedai that could be a mentor, who helps her channel intentionally for the first time EVER, and that first channeling ends up causing Ryma to be captured as a slave & her warder murdered. I’m not at all surprised that it ended up making Ny’s block even worse. So it wasn’t that any decided that she wasn’t ready to channel. She just literally couldn’t because she’s so badly blocked right now. This set her up to being SUPER determined to break her block next season, and I cannot wait!

The aes sedai were originally both men and women together, not just women. The male half of the aes sedai is called the dragons fang. The female white half is called the flame or tear. Together they form balance, good and evil, or the yin yang symbol. The forsaken were part of the orignal male and female aes sedai 3000 years ago (not sure if all the forsaken were aes sedai, but I think so), and that is why they mostly wear black and white.

Nynaeve will do anything to save her friends, but I don't think she relish in the power. You're right that she wants to be in control. Using the One Power, for women, is giving up control and embracing the source. This is why she is having such a hard time with accessing her power. I like how well you understand her struggle with her power and why she can't access it. Remember Ryma? She is still blaming herself for causing Ryma to sacrifice herself. This is why Nynaeve is still scared of her power.

What Lanfear did was called "Traveling". It is a lost art in the current age, but common amongst people before the breaking. You also have to be strong in the power. To be more specific, in the current age, many Aes Sedai are average in the One Power. The ones above average can use "Traveling" if they know the weaves, but it will take them A LONG time to study and learn it. The stronger people are with the One Power, the easier it is for them to learn weaves. There are also Aes Sedai who have special talents, but this will be revealed later...in season 3. 😁

There are a lot of grumbles about Mat's lack of usefulness so far (both from book readers and show onlys), but in fairness to the books, that's pretty much how he was more or less for the first few books. One of the ways that Jordan distinguished between the main 5 is how they respond to the call to action/refusing the call in the hero's journey. Egwene is notable for no refusal at all, and Mat is notable for refusing the call longer than the rest. In general, most book readers don't start to like Mat as a character until either book 3 or 4. Once he comes into his own, many readers consider him their favorite. I heard next season will be mostly book 4 and book 4 is really when Mat accepts that his friends are all living crazy lives and if he loves them, he needs to be all in. The way they handled him and the horn here makes me believe that for show purposes, he has already/finally accepted the call. 😁 As always, I love your videos!

Matt gets his memories of his past lives in a different way in the books. But he does blow the horn in desperation. His father taught him how to use a quarterstaff. In the books that is. They drastically changed Matt's family for the show.

Mat really takes off in book 4 along with Rand. Perrin becomes my favorite stud through the books and Egwayne and Nyneave Grow so steady throughout the books and stay true to their core selves. Nyneave being the protector and Egwayne being the leader made of steel. Love your review !!

I think the fact that Elayne's wound wasn't life threatening was WHY Nynaeve couldn't channel. Nynaeve subconsciously knew she didn't NEED to, she was perfectly capable of dealing with it as a Wisdom. I think if Elayne had taken an arrow to the neck Nynaeve would have been much more emotionally overwhelmed and would have made herself channel.

The Horn of Valere is an ancient artifact that calls all the greatest heroes from history to fight along with the hornsounder. You are correct that in the show blowing the horn did show Mat his past lives and allow him access to past memories. Also, you mentioned a bit about it, but in the books when Nyneave wears the bracelet her reaction is revulsion and feeling sick to her stomach

@@joeleek9976There are a lot of things they could and should jettison for the show. No menageries please, no shaido, no struggle for the throne for Elayne. Not because I didn't like these things but the story doesn't really need those subplots. In the books they drag on and on. I didn't like this episode as much as some. Matt's transformation seems rushed. That dagger wouldn't stay on his quarterstaff being tied like that. Egwene shouldn't have been able to free herself imo. @@joeleek9976 well, it seems to me that the adam should prevent her from killing Renna with an adam. It creates a double forced circle. But maybe the show isn't going to talk about circles and stuff. Primarily I dislike it because it robs Ny'neave of freeing her and talking about true justice not being killing Renna but putting her in a collar and leaving her to be found by other Sul'dam. Plus the fact that Sul'dam are really Damane who haven't been found yet.

@bobc538 Renna released egwene from the a'dam. Egwene could take the pain better. I found it very fitting for the girl that broke bone break fever. It would have made more sense for the feedback to ramp up as it bounced between them, but TV magic exists to serve the story and is never as consistent as it would be in a book...which I admit can be frustrating to experience. I am thinking of Moirane attacking a seanchen fleet from so far away. She is nowhere near powerful enough to do that...but she needed to be for the story. I had a buddy give me that explanation for how strong Hulk is. He is however strong the story needs him to be.

Finally seeing Egwene get her lick back was so glorious if not a bit short-lived, but at last vindication for our girl yassss! I was yelling at the TV during that whole scene. Renna deserved every minute of that! Egwene held it down and she got better control of her powers. I'm excited to see where season 3 takes her as a character with her new found strength. Matt was another character whom I'm excited to see more of if the coming season. Season 2 feels like it finally set his character up to be much more visible and important. The new forsaken are about to really shake sh*t up if spiderwoman at the end has Lanfear gagged like that! I wonder who the 6 are and how the other DFs were at the beginning of season 2. So much to look forward to. I'm sad to see the season end, but this was an epic and extremely satisfying finale. I really enjoyed your reactions every week. People of Falme = Falmen. The Seanchan have sailed across a great ocean to come to the Westlands. Turak is referencing the current continent’s blademasters and is wondering if they have the same skill level he knows from back home in now far-away Seanchan. Moghedien isn’t more powerful than Lanfear, but she got the drop on her. Lanfear hadn’t expected her to be there, so she got caught in her spiderweb. Moghedien(creepy spider lady) is weaker than Lanfear when it comes to raw power. However the entire universe is written so that every character has different "stats" (raw power, channelling skill, different types of intelligence, personally traits, meltal fortitude, political and economic power...) And Moghedien is definitely no joke 👀 Than again, some of the forsaken characters are being merged with others to streamline the story. So show version might be different than book version.

Modern television has given us a Forsaken cast who dress in black (and possibly because she's been merged with one of the Forsaken who wore all black who won't be appearing in the show). All of the Forsaken have been given Immortality by the Dark One/Lord of the Grave.

The Seanchan's entire culture believes women who can channel are dangerous and must be collared for everyone's safety. It's a little more complicated in the books, but in the canon of the show, they have damane who are Searchers and can sense channeling ability. The Seanchan also test girls to see who has the talent to use the sul'dam bracelet. But since they're have such a weak connection to the Power, they were never sensed as channelers. That's why the sul'dam Nynaeve caught was panicking that someone would see her. Sul'dam are honored members of society because of their ability to control damane, but channelers (damane) are reduced to slaves and animals. If Renna knew she could channel, she'd have freaked out. They think the reason they can see their damane's weaves and feel an affinity through the beacelet is because of years of skill and practice.. Remember she thinks a damane is not a person. So she definitely would have never thought she could channel too.

So the Heroes of the Horn are the greatest heroes throughout the ages. They’re people who have done super heroic things which get them linked to the Horn. They’re then repeatedly spun out into the Pattern whenever the Pattern really needs them for heroic deeds (like Mat’s current life) or it’s just time for them to be spun into another life, (like Uno was). When the Horn is blown, the Heroes who aren’t currently spun out are brought back to semi-life, allowing them to fight on behalf of the Horn sounder. Can’t say much more than that right now bc of spoilers, but I hope this helps!

The people summoned by the Horn of Valere are the dead heroes from past Ages, at least most of them are. These Heroes are bound to the Horn and are summoned whenever the Horn of Valere is blown. Most of these Heroes are also being reborn (one example is probably Uno). That's why Mat was alive even though he's one of them as he said, and they also told him that they have fought alongside him in countless occasions (in his past lives). The credits at the end of the episode shows the name of two of these Heroes. One is Amaresu, the Japanese-looking woman wielding a samurai, and Artur Hawkwing, the one wearing a helm. Hawkwing was named in s1e2 and mentioned in s2e5 as the great king who forced the Aes Sedai to bound themselves to the Three Oaths.

Your reaction is a real joy to watch. I love the way you throw out so many witty comments that crack me up. To answer your question about what Turok meant about when he referenced Rand's sword, normally having a heron mark is a sign that a person is a blademaster. In Rand's case it was his foster dad who was the blademaster but Turok doesnt' know that. He wanted to see if the same level of skill was required in the Westlands to earn the mark as was required in Seanchan. To put it crudely Turok wanted a d**k measuring contents but Rand was in a hurry and couldn't oblige (plus he doesn't have that level of skill with a sword) so he channelled and un-alived the lot of them.

The Horn of Valere There are certain souls that are linked to the Horn. How that happened, why those people in particular, who made the Horn.. No one knows and AFAIK it is never really explained or elaborated on in the books. Blowing the Horn just allows for those souls to manifest in the world with enhanced abilities, and they are very good fighters even without those enhanced skills. Sometimes these Souls are being spun into the world as living people, not always remembering who they really are so one of the Heroes could think they are just a random nobody. Mat says he's one fo the Heroes and until he blew the Horn (seemingly giving him back his memories) he had no idea so if he had never blown the Horn he would jsut have kept being the same Mat as before.

I want to say that Nyneave is not CHOOSING not to channel. She is totally traumatized. She always had this block out of fear of the HUGE power. But now all she sees is that she got Ryma’s warder killed and Ryma captured plus any woman who lost a child and watched her husband die traumatically is in an entirely dark place. I think those scenes could have been written better to communicate that.

Really enjoyed your reactions this season! I'm pretty happy with it, as a book reader; I think they got a lot of good stuff in, and prepared the way for future plotlines as well. (My one quibble with the finale is that Nynaeve is my favorite and I hate seeing her fail, but it did hammer home the issue of her block and underline her channeling-related trauma, so I'll forgive it as setup for next season.) Very satisfying to see Egwene come into her own, especially after the last couple of episodes were so grueling for her. On the one hand, she's going to have some lasting trauma from all that; otoh, she knows the depth of her own resilience, how much she can survive and come back from. I'm with you on how satisfying it was to see her take Renna down! Poor Rand though. There's a lot more to him than his romantic status; I wish you'd give him a little more credit! Maybe the show needs to push harder on what happens to men who can channel - from the reactions, I don't think it's been clear to non-readers how much "protecting people from himself" has been Rand's priority this season, or why he's so terrified of channeling. The animated shorts from season 1 had some of the background info, but not everyone watched them or remembers them, so I hope they bring it back up in s3! Remember Logain's shadow companions in s1e4, who were telling him that everyone was going to betray him and he needed to kill them first? The corruption of the dagger and the corruption of the male side of the One Power are from different sources, but they're both evil forces that get into people's heads and push them toward paranoia, violence, and betrayal. Rand's previous incarnation killed his own wife, when the corruption (which was done in retaliation for his sealing the Dark One away from the world) overcame him; everyone knows the story of Lews Therin Kinslayer. Rand hasn't been looking for romance at all, he's been trying to stay away from the people that he's afraid he'll be most driven to kill when the corruption finally overcomes *him*. ("Selene" definitely initiated their relationship this season, presumably by preying on his depression and loneliness and terror at having been essentially terminally diagnosed with Magical Time Bomb Disease.) Running away and letting people think he was dead wasn't a good option, but he doesn't really *have* good options anymore. That's part of the whole Dragon Reborn deal - everyone's gunning for you (including the worst people your past life ever knew), you have very powerful magic but it's poisoned and killing you (and you'll be lucky if it only kills you and not everyone around you), and if you don't figure out what to do about all this very fast it could be the end of the world. He *does* need his friends and their support, but there are good reasons he doesn't want them in the blast radius!

As for Mat not getting a lot of story/screentime: he didn't in the first 2 books either. He (essentially) did two things. In book one, he picked up a corrupted dagger that he shouldn't have. In book two, he blew the Horn of Valere. Both of these things also happened on screen. Other than that, he... really didn't do much of anything, even in the books. His storyline going forward is going to POP OFF, however!!! He's my personal favorite character in the whole series and is well beloved by the fandom as a whole, so get ready for when his storyline starts kicking into high gear!!!
