Bought a pair in December 2022 after trying the local shops demo reel, obviously quite suited as I bought X2. The first one I used was trapping line, like the previous model was renowned for.. I was gutted! I decided to spool the other one up in Innova slik 30lb @ 0.47 it's very thin and extremely strong and I thought it might help with the line going down the side of the spool.. yeah! All good! I spooled the first one I used up with 30lb, first cast, it went down the side of the spool! I tried shims and a few other tricks I could think of but to no avail.. I ended up swapping it at the shop for another fathom cs, while to this day, the good one hasn't skipped a beat?? One of my fishing pals had been gifted the new F15, he was buzzing as he had used the original for years with no issues (apart from that daft handle) which he changed. He is still using his original one, as his xp is trapping the line, so has stopped using it. My conclusion has boiled down to an obvious quality control issue, which I don't think is good enough for a reel costing £250+ If you get a good one, they're great reels but if you don't it's money down the drain.

Nice thorough review just need to haul in a big ball of weed on the floor to really test it

Hi, I have one of these and there seems to be a lot of play when I hold the handle and move the spool back and forward? with a clinking between the gears. Is this correct. If I hold it and shake it the gears rattle. I have Saltist's 30H and Million 7HT and there is no play? Ps - great review as usual.

It's called planned obsolecence (google it). Things these days are designed to fail so you buy another.

That’s got a beefed up loop rig waiting for it to be blasted to horizon mate, 2 rays would give the drag a good test 👍🏻

I was fishing myself mate, we didn't use the reel fishing only casting with a spare rod

The ratchet to quite on the nitron 15 can Bearley hear it with the drag loosened off

Could I ask a relative simple question, why is it important to remove the grease on a new reel, as the spool spindle is free floating and not covered in grease - the grease is on the gears? ? . Thanks in advance Enjoying the tackle reviews

Hi Derek, a lot of manufacturers put grease in everything, but an oil works better in spool bearings and will make them run faster, so a lot of anglers will take the bearings out, clean them with a thinner and add a couple of drops of something like Rocket Fuel oil for optimum performance. Good question though!

The braking system looks very similar to the Akios 656ctm and shuttle reels? How would you say it compares to a Fathom II 12 or 15sd as far as general use though, not just casting but fishing-wise too?

Eva grip puts me off. That will erode very quickly.

I should have learnt my lesson the first time when i bought the black and reds. Awful build quality, line behind spool and hitting the cage issues, poor build quality. For whatever reason i bought three of the new XPs and they havnt even seen a beach they are going straight back. Horrible build quality, machine marks all over the internals, blistering on the gear housing, dust specs in the lacquer, having to under spool because line still hits the cage. Shocking for a reel similarly priced to that of a Daiwa saltist. Id expect this reel to be similarly priced to the casting special if not cheaper.
