Teaching My Girlfriend Stick Shift in My Rare 1955 Chevy Nomad... Disaster Strikes!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I wanted to take a break from wrenching in the garage. Figured it was time for Dani to drive stick shift again. Not just and stick shift... 3 on the tree! Her first time rowing gears on the column and she did pretty good. Maybe next time she'll take it on the street.

I taught my daughter on old country roads, made her stop on 40% hills and start, she didn’t like me for a week or so, but he can still drive a stick!

only way to learn
If anyone is wondering about all the bollards (posts) in the parking lot, they have have outlets to allow Winnipeggers to plug their engine block heaters in, so they can start their car on those very cold -40 degree winter days.

I'm from Texas, that is foreign to me. Thanks
I was smiling the whole time Danny was driving, brings back good memories.
Dani did great, and Dan should have been a driving instructor. Nice work you two. An amazing afternoon with DD Speed Shop. Cheers!! 😎
My Dad taught me in his 70 Datsun Kingcab pickup. He stopped at 7-11 to get a 6 pack of "courage". Only had a mild case of whiplash from the 1st 50 clutch dump/stalls. Love and miss you, Pop!!

@@vwbyoy88 my friends dad gave him a beer before teaching him to drive. People really didn't care about DWIs back then. More than once in the 80s a cop made me pour out my beer then let my drunk ass drive away. You really had to be black out drunk to get a DWI back then.
My Dad taught my Mom how to drive a 3 on the tree in their '56 Ford Fairlane. Years later, my Mom taught me how to drive a 3 on the tree in my newly purchased '62 Ford Falcon, which also had a non-synchro first gear. She taught me how to double clutch, throw a quick rev in while the clutch was engaged, and drop it into first while moving without scratching a tooth.
you go Danni... Learn 3 on the tree and you can drive anything.... That was my first manual way back...
Don't worry Dani, anyone that has learned to drive standard has been through this. You are doing great. I promise it will get easier as long as you keep trying. Love the videos guys.
If you can play video games with coordination you can drive a manual and once you learn it never goes away
DANNI YOU DID GREAT. Dan you are a great instructor. Dated my wife for 4 years after college, living in our respective parents' homes. Just celebrated 40 years of marriage. I told her she could have killed me and been out by now. Joke. You are an inspiration to people everywhere on being calm. I think your vitamin Mur helps you. Love your channel. I watch some episodes a few times. Was born in 1957, so love TriPods. Also Chevelles , Novas and Pontiacs. Keep up the great work. I learned on a 1949 Ford farm truck with a 4 speed and dual speed axle. Also drove a 1969 Chevy work truck with a three on the tree. Danielle, you will be driving like an ace soon. Laugh and love. Regards, Marc P.S. You crack me up.
Danielle keep practicing the more you practice the better you'll get at it before you know it you'll be driving it on the road
It’s something you will never forget! Teaching a family member to drive a stick! Lol
I always taught clutch friction point by having the driver learn how to ride out the clutch at only idle, no gas and not stall it. Once that’s mastered the rest comes quick at least that’s how it always was for me in the drinker seat.

exactly how i teach anyone how it drive a stick shift. learn to work the friction point first so there is no rodeo starts.
Dani, you done good. Once you practice starting and stopping some more, you'll get used to where the clutch starts engaging, then shifting is easy. Learning when to down shift will take some practice. You're learning pretty fast, so go easy on yourself. Every time you learn something new, you should get icecream.😃
Good job Dani ! We all had to start where you're at. Practice, and then more practice. You'll get there, no need to stress.
In first gear, put your palm on the gear shift facing the dash. When you go to second, push up and toward the dash. Do the same thing to get to third.
@60chevyjim

that works if the shifter is adjusted correctly. if not the shifter will come out of first and hangup and the trans will still be in first gear.
I taught my daughter how to drive a stick shift. She became a race car driver. And totalled the car in a rain storm.
Dani did great! Dan you were kind and patient with Dani and you did fantastic teaching her a standard gear set up. Now that she has the basics it's just practice driving with the clutch and shifter for her confidence to grow enough to take to the road or even the blower Nomad. Dani's smile when she did a perfect start and shift sequence was adorable.
Man Dan, you and Dani are sooo good together! Two peas in a pod for sure, extra cool 😎. Thanks for doing a tutorial on "Three on the Tree 🌲". It's been years since I experienced this type of transmission. They are cool and unique transmissions that are perfect for anti-theft and for looking cool! Great video Dan & Dani, the work is appreciated 👍. I hope that you two have a good day today 😊 💗.
Good job Dani... you'll get the hang of it the more you do it...props for learning on 3 on the tree!
I loved the thumb nail. The look on your faces is priceless
another interesting afternoon with DD speed shop well done Dani
Nicely done Dani. Can't wait for round 2 when Dan comes home with a Kenworth 😁
Priceless ! And again, you two work great together
Once you get past the fear it's not hard and it is fun also I like the four on the floor better

I want purple when in school I dyed my bangs blue they wanted to through me out I was the first to were a Maxie same then I wore hot pants 5 other girls they did nothing to them but me my mother had to bring me clothes to change 😂😅❤ I like how you grew them your self 😂
Lol great thumb nail. The looks on both you faces, priceless 😂
I learned to drive a 55 Ford three on the tree at 16 years old. When driving it pulled to the left, when braking it pulled to the right. A lot of fun as you can imagine!
My aunt, who is 5'4", drove her '56 Chevy 150 Business Coupe from 1961-1984 as a daily driver with a 3 on the tree. She was flawless at it! Really, it's all muscle memory! If Dani drives the Newmadd alot, it will become second nature to her and I bet she'll eventually love it! I can't wait to get my '55 210 4 door with a 3 on the tree w/overdrive running just to be able to drive one again...fun times!
Good job Dani. You're a trooper. You'll be driving 3 on a tree, on the streets, in no time flat. Dan you are very patient and a good teacher. You were really clutch today.
That's so kewl you taught her this Dan everyone needs to know this I think ya did good teaching her I CAN FEEL HER EYES BURNING THRU YOU when you said your driving home even with her glasses on Great Job guys
I haven’t laughed so hard since I taught my wife to drive our stick shift 71 gremlin in 79! We pulled back to the house & she didn’t put the clutch & it stalled. When I asked her why she didn’t put in the clutch she said, “you didn’t tell me to!” Good times! I wish I still had either one of the 2 gremlins we owned they were fun to drive on the freeway!
Dani nailed it.
Teaching my girlfriend stick in “OUR” rare 55 Nomad….lol
Dannie is a smart gal. I'm sure she'll do just fine. And Dan, you did a great job of teaching. Must get that from Mur!
Well done Danni! The hardest part of driving a manual is the takeoff, and the stopping. Once you've got that under control it's all good from there. Keep up the practice and you'll be shredding rear tyres in no time!
My grandma taught me to drive a Mazda pickup trucks on the back roads. I loved her for it. You did a awesome job Danie. Keep up the great work you two.
Your doing a great job Danielle way to go girl and Dan has great patience teaching you
I think Dannie did great for the first time. A few more visits to the parking lot and she’ll be taking off in the new-mad!
Dani you did a great job learning to drive 3 on the tree
You two always crack me up. Fantastic content as usual. I have not missed an episode for years.
When we were kids, the family car was a ‘59 Biscayne 6 banger with three on the tree. Now my daily driver is a ‘58 Delray 6 banger three on the tree overdrive. I absolutely have to have that third pedal,
When She switched her glasses it was like when Stallone turned his hat around in over the top.
Darlin you did just fine. Way better than many. 😉
Dani, you did great. Newer cars with sticks, especially imports, are “butter.” 3 speeds require a lot more clutch slip than say a five or six speed; you conquer the Nomad and the stick world is YOURS.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Put Dani behind a 100lb clutch starting on a steep uphill incline. 😊
Dani makes everything cute. Absolutely adorable.

That was just supper enjoyable to me . I trained truck drivers for over 10 years . I had a kid from the army that just got back from active service that had no experience driving with a clutch . He turned out to be one of the best . I take a lot of pride from that . PS that was one of the best screen shots i've ever seen .
My sister bought a brand new Saturn way back when, she ordered it with a 5 speed. She had never driven a stick before! We picked it up and within 1 hour, I had made her into a pro!! I had her starting uphill, shifting, stopping, the whole 9 yards!! She went to work the next day, no problem! The next day, I had her shifting without the clutch!! She was a natural, I was so proud!
Good job Dannie!! I had to teach my girlfriend (now wife of 27 years) to drive stick in my 5.0 Mustang the night before I left on deployment in a Walmart parking lot... She now drives all of my hot rods!! And so will Dannie...
Dude, Dani driving a stick is so much fun compared to an automatic. And 3 on the tree is even more fun. My 58 Studebaker is a 3 on the tree and my 13 year old can do it, and so can you
Dani did great for her first time
I cried learning to drive manual and I was in '90 Ford Tempo. I can't imagine the stress of driving the bank's '55 Nomad! Nice work Dani! And kudos to Dan for calmly explaining everything!

I learned on a 1950's dump truck when I was 4 putting up hay
Gotta give Danielle props, learning to something and doing it on camera. NO PRESSURE! F that lol. Reminds me of my dad's idea of "teaching" me to drive stick. We walk outside, he randomly tosses me the keys to his "Dont even look at it, YOU will brake something" car, and says, "let's go". That was one of the maybe 10 times I drove that car more than 50 feet in the 20 years he had it. His, precious 70 Charger. I'd grown up riding motorcycles and occasionally the neighbors tractor but to be tossed the keys at 14 and just told to drive was a brain freeze moment lol.
I taught my to drive a stick about 43 years ago in an old beat up 68 Beetle. She was an amazingly fast learner and the first training session was her last, and she was doing amazing. She drove two Ford Escorts for a few years and we haven't had a clutch car since. Back in 2014 I bought a new C7 corvette with a 7 speed manual. She wanted to take a turn driving and I was quite nervous, but she had no issue driving it. Like riding a bike!. You're doing fine Danielle, just get the confidence and you will be fine!
Dani did a good job
For your first time Dani you done great
I taught my wife with 3 kids in the car too . Lot of laughter. One guy pulled up beside us and asked if we needed help😢I told him she was learning, he said I understand 😅😅😅
Dani I was going to tell Dan he should start with the gas and clutch dance taking off but then he got there. Once you figure out how each car clutch wants you to start you are golden. Only other thing is when things get a little freaky driving you just step on the clutch. Always clutch first then regroup.
Great job Dani ! I remember my first time ! Lol ! Now Im a Gear jammer !
Dani, it's like swimming. Once you get it you got it.
Thanks for sharing this video with us
Taught my wife on a 66 c10 3 on the tree. You should make her drive every manual you have back to back. Hey love your show.
Once again, great reality television!
Got to learn sometime, it is not as hard as you think it is, you can do it😊
Column shifters can actually be good! The problem is too many folks have driven cars when they aren't good, and assume they are all "that bad". Mercedes in the 60's had a REALLY smooth 4 speed on the column, it opened my eyes to how good it could be when they are dialed in properly.
Great video. Brings back memories. Most of the three speed column shift cars I have had or driven were worn badly like your car. I don’t think I ever owned a real nice one that shifted well. My grandfather loved them and he destroyed them. He would rev it high in first, totally skip second and drop it in third. So first to third for many years of hard shifting he would loosen up the shifter linkage fast. He was a character, no brand loyalty whatsoever, it had to be the absolute cheapest car he could order. He would special order them stripped and only go for an upgrade for the motor. As a kid he always had me drive his three speed, hard to shift, overpowered, manual everything, radio deleted cars wherever he wanted me to take him. The shifter was usually so worn out I would apologize when I would grind a gear, miss a shift, have a jerky launch, whatever and he would just laugh and tell me I was doing great. He didn’t care, compared to him I was a great driver and easier on the car and shifter than he would be.
The look on Dani's face the first time she nailed it= Priceless !!! Ya did good girl , soon you'll be wantin to drive the Nova or wanting a 4 speed in Your Nova !!!😅😂
👍 on the driving
I started driving in a 1974 F150 4x4 30 some years ago. I'm 50 now and still on a hill cant get a perfect launch so dont take it to heart, every stick vehicle is different. But practice makes perfect so keep'er up chicky ! You're doin great !
Brave Man Dan. Great job driving in The nomad Danielle 👍✌️🇺🇲
I taught my niece how to drive a stick she was so proud we drove for 2 mi around the block with no incidents, we got all the way back to the house when she pulled up in the yard she didn't match the clutch and she hit the house😢

Nothing more classic than a learning standard session 👍🏻….. my brother taught me to let the clutch out til i felt it start to engage then put it back in an inch to find the “ sweet spot” … do it several times …. Then it became muscle memory and i could simply give it gas as soon as clutch started to engage …
Dani you are so brave, you rocked this and Dan is a very kind teacher.
Hey Dan and Danielle, I laughed my butt off at 32:20 into the video. When Danielle said "noooo" after the hill problem you mentioned. Love your channel, cars, and videos. Take care and be safe.
Hey! As someone who sported a Mohawk, for years, I somehow resemble that remark! Fortunately, for me anyway, none of my "Hold my beer" moments actually killed me!! LOL, BTW, Good job Danni. You were picking it up towards the end, it's all about "Seat Time". Every clutch is just a little different, yet they're all the same. Wrap your head around that one!😉
Dani did great!!!
As the left foot comes up, the right foot goes down.. 👍👍
I taught my son how to drive a standard but I never could teach my wife. You did well Danielle, She never felt like she could do it.
🧢 hats off to you Dan for having so much patience with Dannie especially with the best car in the fleet 👍👏
DANNY YOU DID A VERY GOOD JOB 👍 A LOT PEOPLE STALL OUT THE CAR , WHEN LEANING HOW TO DRIVE A STICK SHIFT!😊😊😊
My Dad taught me that on a three on the tree, “back and up” is for “backing up”. It’s been 40 years and I still remember that.
Dani did th best! She's a fast learner. Canada's common law is 7 years.........Congratulations you two love birds!
Well done Danni you done really well keep it up we would love to see more of you driving the nomad
I taught my sister in my '68 Cougar. Went to an unpopulated area and got her going and stopping comfortably, then we hit the road. After a few blocks on the street, some dumbass locked their brakes behind her and nearly rear ended us, no fault of hers. For some unknown, unimaginable reason, she was done. She went from mastering it to "I'm never doing that again" in that one instant. I never did get her to try again, despite her seemingly natural aptitude for it. Still shaking my head over that one. I learned on my own when I was sent to the store with my friend's car and couldn't admit I didn't know how. Hey, I figured it out before I got back from the store. Actually, I'd had motorcycles so I already grasped the concept, just never driven a car like that. Has it really been 40 years since then? Seems like the day before yesterday.
Bravo Dani! Practice makes perfect, you'll nail this. It is difficult at first, however just be patient, it's really not that difficult. Remember learning to ride a two wheel bike? Same thing basically. The next most difficult thing will be hills, hills will be killer at first. Once you're comfortable on flat ground, hills will be the next real challenge. Confident you'll master this, and be a ace in no time!
Great job, Dani!!!!! You should be very proud of yourself. Kudos to you too Dan for always being calm.
Great job keepin it cool and getting moving!!! Looked like yall had some fun 😁
Danielle, you did awesome! Dan you are a pretty good teacher I must say.
Danni I love your boots! I grew up on a farm everything was manual I was about 4 or 5 sitting between mom & dad in a 49 Ford shifting the gears not much later the Ford tractor, at 16 a 4&3 transmission with 2 speed axle straight truck my dad & uncle built to haul corn. It was a beast! Life was good
With practice dani youll get the clutch it takes time well done both of you good vids love it from down under in AUSTRALIA
Dannie definitely did awesome. Once you can master the take off everything else comes naturally. The only issue i see is that she needs some blocks on the pedals or some platform shoes because shes too short to work the pedals quickly and if shes ever on a hill needing to take off and starts rolling back thats really the only issue most people have when learning. Youll get it though and once you do itll be like you always knew how! You got this! And as always you have a great instructor! Lol keep practicing! Id suggest maybe getting her a little ford ranger with a stick that she can bounce around in without all the nervousness of damaging a nomad because im sure that factors in too!
The Nomad is such a nice car that it deserves a horn ring as does Dani deserve a ring also😊
You did great Dani keep practicing you will have no problems I learned to drive on my dad's 62 galaxy 500
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT !
This reminds me how much I don't miss the old manual transmissions. Drove enough of them over the years. Could drive them just fine but I don't miss them one bit.
It really is a sweet learn to learn! Congrats!!
This is like a rerun from 1984 . We had a brand new 1984 Chevy Cavalier with a 5 speed. I never saw the check engine come on until I was teaching my wife to drive with the 5 speed. 🤣🤣
Danny, you did pretty good for your first time . I taught my sister how to to drive a 3 on the floor in a 69 Mustang, she could never get the hang of it. So keep practicing and you will get better.
Oh boy Dani first time dang good job. I've taught nieces how to drive a stick and it was the same or WORSE first time around. You got this.
