such a cool piece of police car history

this old 68 coronet highway patrol car is a cool piece of police history when the chaser and the chase' were on the same playing field, both big block high horsepower muscle cars. in just 4 short years after this car the HP number were cut in half and the squad cars gained 500lbs

In 1968 we were headed from Ft Dix to Philadelphia International Airport in a stretched Checker station wagon. I happened to notice that a car was keeping pace beside us in the multilane traffic, it had a neon-type light in in drivers rear side window that the officer could turn on - "PULL OVER" with lights above deck on rear seat. The drivers side door in white block letters said: Pennsylvania State Police Turnpike Interceptor. He was running a 426 hemi. A Corvette blew by us in traffic and it sound like the hemi was going to suck the hood through the carburetor. Several miles down the Corvette puked out in a cloud of steam.

Just for context; $250 in 1972 is about $1900 today with inflation. Back then it was probably a running driving car. Now the motor won’t turn and it probably needs a complete restoration. I guess “amazing price” depends on whether you are paying - or getting paid. It’s what the market will bear, anyway.

The old Mopar cop cars rule! Back when I was 13, the county I lived here in Nebraska-the Sheriff and 3 Deputies drove 70 440 powered musclecars, the Sheriff had a dark green 70 Charger R/T, one Deputy had a Hemi Orange 70 Coronet R/T, another a Plum Crazy 70 Super Bee, and there was another one. All had the 2 red lights on the light bar. It was a pretty cool time. Most of the cop Mopars around here were C Bodies, better highway cars. Any B Bodies were usually used in towns. I drive a 71 Polara , 2 dr hdtp, ex-Nebraska State Patrol car. I found it in a salvage yard, it sat quite a few years. Got it back on the road in 2014 and have put 16,000 miles on it the last 10 years. It has the correct light bar withthe red lights and the long whip antenne. It's got TTI exhaust and a NOS Thermoquad and a 2.76 SureGrip for Interstate driving. It's so much to drive and everyone loves it.

Watched as a 68 cruiser’s drive train disintegrate while chasing a corvette. There was a lot of noise, smoke and then parts on the road. That cop had a history of really bad luck. Somehow lost his revolver while chasing a criminal. A couple of years after that he accidentally shot himself in the foot. Everybody in town called him “four toes”. Surprisingly he survived long enough to retire.

My dad bought a 77 Plymouth Fury Cop Car. He was high bidder on it. It had a 440 engine, it had the certified 150 mph speedo. It had power steering with a power steering cooler, and a 100 amp alternator. The back doors would not open up from inside. It had a crappy Thermoquad carb on it. The floats were problematic. Sometimes when you went around a sharp turn it would shut off due to the fuel bowl on that side running out of fuel. I put a Edelbrock 750 carb on it and it ran much better. My brother was taking an autobody shop class at school and they painted the car light blue. 7 mpg in that boat.

But did you TRY to even see if it had movement?? I've seen much older engines end up turning and running after sitting for much longer.

Speaking of stuff that's no longer around, THE car I miss the most of ALL I've owned was My 1977 Dodge Royal Monaco 2 door, that had a 440, 727, 3.23 Suregrip and EVERY single police HD upgrade ordered by the original owner to pull His Airstream camper. Car was stolen from Me in 1997 in Houston😢 Car had to be absolutely one of one..
