Him interrupting was a tad of a distraction at the beginning but he did end up getting in some good questions and the fact that he actually seemed to learn from that is nice as well. I love how you showed the promoting hierarchy as well

Also, I would add to this video the use of the good ol' HEAD NOD as it's always with you and you can decrease the prompt by minimizing the movement. Nonverbal kids can participate without the need for a physical cue card AND I've found when the head nods...the voice often follows with "yes" or "no". Viola. I am a certified SLP and BCBA's and SLP's need to collaborate more. I've shared some videos with my OT and there are some disclaimer aspects to consider but overall, I feel this is super helpful for the average parent that's leaning into instruction especially since more teaching is happening in the home than ever before. Thanks ya'll

You guys are awesome...I have seen a couple of different ways for the "Yes/No" techniques your techniques seem to fit my grandson the best...It is simple and easy to catch on...just want to say "thank you"...for sharing your gift with us. So the next time he comes over I will begin to use this technique with him until it works. I will also share this video with his parents....and see what happens.

Hi I have a son who is nonverbal, but he understand everything I say and can repeat everything I say. With that said I have a major problem with getting my son into the car seat so we can make it to places on time. Honestly sometimes it could take me 20mlns to an hour before he gets in. We do use pictures to show him what's next after the car seat or where we're going. Sometimes it works if there is something that he likes after the place we need to be which is totally understandable but, I am a single Mom of 2 my oldest is in gymnastics three times a week because she does competitions and she loves it. Her practice ends at 9 at night 3 days a week. My son needs to come with me to pick her up every time because there is no other help. I'll use McDonald's french to bribe him but at that time of the night three times a week it's hard. I thought about cutting my daughter back and when I ran that by her she was in tears. Any suggestions or strategies I should be doing?? 😣

If he has favorite toys, say you can have the toy once you get in car seat. For my nonverbal grand, I put a small basket of toys beside the car seat. She gets in the seat and grabs the toys beside the seat! Hope this helps 😉

Hi my son is 32 months old , he is non verbal till now. But he says papa and mama when he wants or needs to. He does response to his name and has decent eye contact. He's a very happy baby and has no problem with any physical contact with anyone . Since he is d only child at home mostly he plays alone but does like to play with us whenever we try to play with him , but he never stays alone in a room , he always has to have someone to be with him. He's very aware of d surrounding's and is very careful when walking , running or playing but he does hand flapping , spinning and line's his toys up but only cars and trucks not other toys. He is very weak in social behavior he doesn't like to be in a place for a long time . We had him diagnosed abt 4 months ago with a psychiatrist and she diagnosed him with mild to moderate Austim. We're currently sending him to a normal school and his teacher's don't think he is autistic and he's pediatrician also doesn't think he is autistic. So we're in a dillema wht shd we do . Should we send him to speech therapist or autism therapy , need help?

Y'all are too cute! We are working on mom: "what do you want" kiddo: "I want the [item]." Do you think it's an appropriate time to teach yes/no communication? Do you think introducing yes/no would interfere with the work we are doing with "I want..."?

  • @Intothespectrumvideos

Kayla Pitzer Thank you so much!! 😀 Those two lessons can be confusing! The questions: "what do you want?" and "do you want this?" are very similar!!! That's something to look out for! Generally speaking, one would want to make sure asking for items (I want __) is solid before moving on. Everybody's a little different of course, so make sure to always ask a speech therapist or bcba if you're working with ☺️ them!

My son who is completely nonverbal does a sign language “more” when he wants it. And gives me no reactions when he doesn’t want it. Is this a good way for him to communicate or should I reach him nodd/shaking head for yes/no???
