I really think it depends on how they engage the student. Being deliberately put on the spot would make anyone feel defensive. But if their tone is less confrontational and more genuinely inquisitive, it can draw people out more that need to participate.

I don’t like when teachers only call on kids who don’t have their hands raised, or only call on those six kids who do. It has to be a balance. Sometimes I’ve been in cold-call-only classes where I would only get called on when the teacher and I BOTH KNEW THAT I WAS STUCK.

If you just say you don't understand then she will probably explain it to you. Sometimes a teacher starts off the year super nice, then everybody takes advantage of that and goes crazy so then the teacher loses it at some point and gets meaner. And sometimes you start off the year thinking a teacher is really strict and cold but then you gradually find out little bits of trivia about them as the year goes on, that they're really into fandoms you don't expect a teacher to be into, or that they do something really cool in their spare time and by the end of the school year ur like wow Mr. or Ms. so-and-so is not what I assumed AT ALL.

Being a teacher is hard because you are dealing with people who arent on your level. You have to be patient and kind.even when they are disrespecting you. Teachers arent there to be your friend their job is to instruct. On top of this they get people who have No manners or foundation of trust. How can you teach someone who is not willing to learn. Or misbehaves. It takes a toll.

I am a new teacher, and the first advice given to me was be strict first, and be friendly later. Because if we started off friendly, students will thought hey we're friends and totally ignore the fact that we're still their teachers. It will be difficult for us to carry out the lessons since the students aren't taking us seriously. Vice versa, students will appreciate teacher's friendliness later the year if the teacher was super strict from the beginning. Sadly my first year I took the wrong a move and I was the friendly teacher, and hell yeah I struggled A LOT from being friendly. I understand the advice given later that year, but it's too late because no one thought me as a teacher anymore. It was fun being friends with students however it's a bad thing in the classroom.

The one about asking questions to people who don’t look willing... that really needs to stop. I’ve literally been in the middle of an obvious panic attack before and a teacher kept asking me questions to get my mind off it, but that doesn’t help at all. In fact, that was one of the reasons for it in the first place. If it’s obvious someone doesn’t know something and you are making them uncomfortable, that’s when you need to question whether you are making the right approach or not.

Agreeing with the commenters saying that calling on kids who don't have their hands up does NOT work. If no one has their hand up, okay yeah maybe pick someone at random, but PLEASE find better ways to "engage" your class than picking on students who are probably anxious, might be sick that day and not wanting to talk, tired, or just don't know the answer. It's not funny or helpful. (And honestly, any teacher that actually does something "because it's mean" needs to rethink their line of work.)

I had a teacher who hated me and I failed her class. She would always call on me when I didn't have my hand up, even when I let her know before class started that I had laryngitis and couldn't talk, which would have been fine because we were watching a movie that day, but then she called on me to answer a question during the movie, and I was like, "Woman, you know I can't talk, I told you this already." And needless to say I got sent to office for disciplinary action for "not answering the teacher when asked a question." The best part was the following year I found out the principal had her fired. It was going to be a good year.

Is that so bad to understand that even if I was not the person who didn't know the answer it still caused me major anxiety because I just didn't like speaking publicly to children (I've always called people my age children when I was younger I'm weird I guess). Speaking to other adults is a whole different ball game and that was something my younger self could do(I was speaking to many higher-level people in highschool and even did speeches to them). I was not a normal student and so I can't even imagine the anxiety of the everyday student considering that mine made me never want to go back to school for my university. Teaching is such a tough profession. Like your not just 'teaching' that isn't the end of your day. Your emotionally supporting, dealing with parents, dealing with tough kids, admin, planning lessons, marking and more... All for a really crappy wage. Yay

Now that I think about my teachers, ones that I loved and my not so favourite. None of my teachers ever made me feel that they not rooting for me or wanted me to fail. Teachers are amazing ❤️🙏🏼💐

My high school teachers were so amazing and really helped me survive. I would stay for an hour after school some days to just help make their job easier. I heard a lot of drama and really built such strong relationships.

When I was in high school I made it a point to get to know my teachers personally as best as I could. If they saw us everyday and knew almost everything about our lives, why couldn’t I know anything about theirs? Luckily for me this wasn’t too difficult, as a lot of my teachers were very friendly and shared a lot about themselves

2:56-2:57 right. When she said “it’s cause we’re mean” I was like yup yup yuppp. Like I can still be listening and not know the answer. Teacher calls on me and I don’t know the answer. Me-Uhhhhhhh ummmm ‘puts head down’ Teacher- we’re waiting. Me-about to cry cause I don’t know the ANSWER. Me- ‘lifts head’ ....... Teacher- this is why you should listen. Me- but I was listening. You just said everything and it sounded like a bunch of numbers to me.

I had a 3.6 GPA through high school and took advanced placement classes. It always upset me when a teacher would call on me when I did not raise my hand. I was extremely shy and gave me unnecessary anxiety. I wish I could go back to high school and ask my teachers questions they could not answer in front of their students. You are teachers not psychiatrists.....if a student is passing your class leave them alone.
