Former teacher (10 years) now in my 5th year in corporate training in aerospace engineering and it's absolutely magical. These are the kindest, most encouraging and supportive people I've ever worked with. I get to do all the fun teacher things, share my expertise with others, experiment with different strategies and approaches, and, perhaps best of all... THEY PROVIDE ALL THE SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT! You don't have to go into EdTech, or ID, or even traditional corporate training. If there's another industry you're interested in, start digging and see what their training needs are. The group I found is not part of our corporate training org, it supports a specific engineering function, so in many ways, I have even greater freedom to expand and experiment.

This is so relatable. None of my friends or family understand why I’m embarrassed to share what my job is, it’s not because my job is my bad, but it’s because my identity was “teacher” this magical saint who saves kids and has ungodly patience. When you tell someone you’re a teacher it has an affect on them and they immediately know something about you. When you tell someone you have a generic office job it’s boring and tells them nothing.

I wonder if there’s been a study on how many first year teachers get diagnosed with depression halfway through their first year ?

I’ve been debating between ID and Training. I think this has really helped me to decide. As you said early on - once you start working on Instructional Design tools you may realize that’s not for you. I literally have a video pulled up to complete after this one learning the tools and I’m not totally feeling it. Sounds like a lot more working by myself kind of stuff. I need people! So thank you for all the inspiration here 💜

What’s the difference between the two, I’m in the beginning of looking at a career switch and both ID and corporate training is what appears the most when it comes to jobs outside of teaching.

Never start a teaching career in middle school unless you want a fast end to a career or you are a man or masculine (because they require a lot of assertive leadership) . Middle school students have no filter whatsoever and have passed the time of wanting to follow the rules and please teachers, but haven’t reached the time of self autonomy and wanting to do well for college.

Is there one on one interaction in the course or just customers reading info and applying it? Is there a type of job guarantee with payment for course? Thank you!

Planning on teaching for three years, transitioning to a corporate entry-level job, and getting an MBA. Could that type of experience qualify me to be a corporate trainer?

You usually don't need to get an MBA to become a corporate trainer. We have other episodes of the Teacher Career Coach Podcast you should check out with other former teachers who became trainers.
