Teach It Tuesdays, Ep. 002 Woolen Yarn from Rolags

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Create rolags on a drum carder using loose locks and fibers, then use a drop spindle to create a woolen yarn.
In this episode I’ll use freshly dyed fibers, created using the Redding Method, to card beautiful rolags on my drum carder. Once the rolags are finished, I’ll show you how to spin a traditional woolen style yarn on a simple drop spindle.

RogueFibers yes, I'm old now but since I was very little I've always wanted to spin, I crochet knit quilting... paint... You name it, but never had the opportunity to learn to spin and learn about different fiber you can make yarn out of (I knew the box stores acrylic very well) I've been watching millions of videos and I have the technique and the understanding (in my head) down pat. My first drop spindle and corriedale wool comes in on the 21st. All this time I thought you HAD to have a spindle to make decent yarn, now I know all I needed was some wool and a stick...if the fiber comes in first I'm gonna get a stick from out side and start!!!! Thank goodness for KZread and KZreadrs like you, I'm gonna get to try out a life long dream!!! I might cry, so excited...lol!!!!!!!!!

Gena, that is exciting!! I'm glad you are jumping in with both feet. I prefer to think of the "rules" more like guidelines! I can't wait to hear about your experience after the fiber gets to you. I hope you'll share your journey with me!

Hi Sabine! Yes, I love this drum carder so much, and get a lot of use from it. It is very well made. I bought it from a lovely friend (her name is Sabine too!) in spinning group. She is near the Stuttgart area; The website is: www.holzwurmwolle.de/

I am new to all of this. I’m a hard core crocheter. So, where does one begin if they would like to learn how to do this and what would you suggest would be a good start? Like not deeply financial but a simple start?

  • @RogueFibers

Hi Sheri! A great place to start is with a drop spindle, if you want to learn how to spin. If you want to blend fibers, I would start with died felting fiber and hand blend the fibers together.

This is a good spinning tutorial, but that’s not woolen spinning. That would use rolags and long draw. This is maybe semi-woolen since it uses rolags. But it’s really more of a worsted drafting merging.
