Interesting video thank you for this but regarding the cool volume control... i suppose they did this because audiophiles don't like semiconductors for (remote) volume control they want a real potentiometer. Btw where are the acoustic controls? (treble bass loudness etc) you now need to adjust them on your source... not always possible. regards, Mike

I love seeing a product that looks and performs like equipment from the era in which all the companies were "making their name", combined with a market full of people looking to set up a very nice Hi-Fi system. Great video, as always. Beautiful piece, I love equipment that is not only what I described above, but also not jumping into the insanely-priced (and to be fair, often insanely built/developed, etc.) category.

@Techmoan Hey, If you look at the video where you say "it´s definitely 120v." You can see that there´s connection points for 230v. Snip the connection for 120v, and solder the two points where there´s a line and says 230v. The internals will now be wired for that voltage. They usually only make one version of these mainboards (with internal PSU´s) and wire them for the region in which they will be sold

It's called a toggle switch! I was blessed to have lived through the Audio Golden Age. 1965-1985. Many companies did not survive the recession of 1979. It was incredible. The quality. The infinite selection. Dozens and dozens of the variations of the same component to select from. And the competition meant rock bottom prices here in the U.S.

This is a nice looking piece in a conveniently small package that seems to be well made . I also really like the VU meters. But it's rather restrictive with no tone controls, no balance control, and no preamp loops for adding either of those things in, or really expanding its capabilities. I think this unit would work well if your PC is the primary audio source and you can tweak the sound before it reaches the amp. They need to build a more deluxe version.

You might be able to convert it to 230v by removing the 120v (W301) jumper seen at 9:44 and soldering it into the empty (W302) holes marked 230v. Just be sure to check the layout on the PCB and schematics if you try this.

+SomiTomi Maybe some other component needs changing too. Could be anything on the mains side of things. It costs real money to make two different back plate silk screens and make sure the right back plate variant is mounted on the units with the right jumper soldered in, so there is probably more to it than trying to save a switch.

The VU meters may look slow because the spec for VU is smoothed and damped, so it should be a bit "behind" the peaks. Most meters listed as VU on consumer hi-fi gear are either peak meters mislabeled or not quite to spec, so they look more responsive. Also, it looks like your friend might be able to have the jumper on the transformer taps (the bit where you confirmed it was 120V) changed over so it runs on 230V AC.

Thanks for the review as this is a DAC/Amp I would like to experience someday. Best application for this unit is using with a Macbook or iMac via optical output on 3.5 minijack, yes that is correct. And Toslink to optical in on 501. Recently I have ripped my CD's to iTunes in AIFF coding which is full file on CD so no degradation at all. In fact the DAC is better than any CD and the processing is absolutely seamless.

I've got a Sony UDA-1 which can regularly be found in the USD~$3-400 range on eBay. It's very similar to this in terms of performance and connection availability, down to the motorized volume dial. The UDA-1 has a remote that looks similar to one of those cheap things you'd normally get with a car stereo, and there's no VU meters or classically-styled power switch. It does have an interesting "DSEE" feature which is supposed to resolve some problems found in PCM-encoded audio streams, but either I misunderstand its purpose or just can't tell a difference. I've also got an extra USB connection on the front, useful for plugging in your phone. You may have overlooked one of the best uses of a device like this, which is that it doubles as a very nice headphone amplifier. I previously had a thin Onkyo bookshelf amplifier with a separate "audiophile"-grade analog headphone amplifier chained off of it. I replaced both with the tiny UDA-1 and have been happy with the change.

Hi all, picked one of these up (NOS) from Musikus Hi-Fi Germany (they had two left) for EUR524.00 which I think is a bit of a bargain. Unfortunately they don't ship to Australia however was able to send this to a former work colleague in the UK who will then send it to my home address here is Sydney. Exchange rate equated to around AUD825 at the time so not a bad deal. Thanks to Techmoan for bringing this great piece of kit to may attention, can hardly wait to try it out. Based on the many positive reviews on the web I may have to stump up for a pair of ProAc Tablette 10's (I hope) !

Hi, checking TEAC website the drivers seems to have had an update (2014) also the page no longer says it's discontinued and here in the US it's back to $599 price

Hi Techmoan, Thanks for this review. Very helpful. I noticed you have the Mistral DT-307S bookshelf speakers in the background. I have been desperate to find a review on those and have been offered a new pair for $200 (NZ). Have you reviewed them or can you do so or comment on their quality? I know it's off topic.

I would LOVE to have this unit for my computer. I always run my audio controls on flat anyway.

Nice touch: calculating total on nixie tube calculator and puts it in a youtube video; way cooler than me and my sharpie on a post-it note taking a picture and texting to my friend.

+Techmoan Such an inverter as shown in this video, does it simply transform the voltage down from 240V~ 50Hz to 120V~ 50Hz or is it a real converter and has it a 120V~ 60Hz signal on the output?

Nice... I have noticed a lot of new very expensive digital devices that run 24Bit 192KHz; stupid question, but why not just use your phone, laptop, or any other device with Bluetooth... Is the compression noticeable? Do these do something that a laptop or home PC with a decent sound card doesn't? Thanks!
