I really don’t know why so many people find Russian hard. It took me about two months to be able to read newspaper editorials and academic papers, since the structure of the language is extremely logic and clear, and words are all made from roots, endings, prefixes etc. There are also a lot more foreign words than one would normally imagine (Greco-Latin, German, French, and most recently English, but bear in mind Russians transcribe those words phonetically, not respecting the original spellings, like those silent letters in French are left out in the transliteration, so sometimes it is not easy to guess). So I just memorised a list of about 500 Russian roots, bought a small словообразобательный словарь, then declension and conjugation tables, took me half a month, then I began reading academic papers, with a dictionary and online parser to familiarise myself with the endings. Every evening I would also read some pages of my small ‘word-forming’ dictionary. Admittedly speaking can be harder with the stress, especially since the stress can change with declensions and conjugations. As for listening, the problem is nowadays people speak too fast, I can understand Brezhnev and Gorbachev almost perfectly, but not modern day Russian youtubers. But I am not planing to go to Russia anyway, I simply want to read Russian literature and papers. It may be due to the fact that I know Latin and Greek, two heavily inflected languages with a lot of grammatical similarities. In fact, Greek may have actually a huge influence on both Russian word formation and grammar. I have noticed that in Russian etymological dictionaries, they always accompany the Church Slavic or Old Russian word with an Ancient Greek translation, the same way that early German (monolingual) dictionaries would often include Latin translations. Probably those words were used first as translations of Greek words, like from the New Testament etc.

I"ve been to Khabarovsk 8 times since 2014.. Delightful place. I only speak 3 words of Russian, and was always treated with respect you will rarely find in the U.S. if you don't speak English. Many Russians speak some English, especially young people. My phones translator feature was critically important. The Russian ladies are smart and beautiful. And seemingly everywhere. And there's Mexican food. 😂
It's great to see you looking radiant and healthy again, Lisa. We had same weather in my city today with gray sky, rain, and strong wind also. Great interview. In the 1970's I was a student at the Browning School in NYC, an elite school but had a transfer in my Junior year to St. Sergius down the road on Park Avenue, a Russian school . What an eye opener, never was really good at language and that alphabet ! But the history and geography as well as the patriotic structure was amazing. Learned to fence there ( not a skill called for much these days) Returned for my senior year to the old school much wiser and with a great appreciation for your country and its people who delivered themselves from communism 20 years later while we in the USA now embrace it. Lol

Communism combined with capitalism is good. But it should be reasonable. In Russia, as I understand it, now there are more freedoms, including in business, more freedom of speech than in the United States. Welcome to Russia. Especially if you are a specialist in the field that we currently lack, we in Russia are ready to pay you very high (by world standards) salaries and bonuses.

@@DigitalResistance-jr5tk"As I understand it....there is more freedom of speech than in America"- you quite obviously do not understand it very well then. Good to see that you have recovered and are back on your feet again. I enjoyed your video - it was fun to watch. Marmite is based on yeast extract. and is nice on buttered toast. It can also be added to homemade soups and stews for a savoury flavour. There is also an Australian version called Vegimite. Although it took me longer to learn the language, but I think it was because I did not know a lot of Japanese before I arrived. I have learned quite a bit of Russian, and always thought that if I lived in Russia for a year I could understand what people are saying around me. After hearing what Simon had to say, I have doubts. Мне (и моим англоговорящим детям, разумеется) нужно очень много усилий предпринять, чтобы произносить звук th как з или с. Поэтому, как я уже писала раньше, учитесь правильно произносить этот звук. Да, язык помещается между зубами, да, его будет немного видно другим, особенно поначалу, когда Вы осваиваете произношение, но это и есть английский, понимаете? У Вас, видимо, стеснение, а не неудобство. Над этом надо работать и всё получится.
Simon sounds like he has a Krasnodar accent/dialect (fast but clear), but yours is easier for me to follow. Marmite is actually good on toast. (I know I shouldn't say anything nice about anything British since I'm 1/4 Irish).

Doubt if my wife would let me stayover for 5 years to pick up the lingo as the bins need taken out every other week. Marmite has an Australian cousin called Vegemite and from my point of view there's not much between them...I don't like either of them. I think he was quite interesting and might be able to show stuff that nobody bothers with because it's humdrum to you guys, it may not be for us.
