    To give you a suggestion. Every 10 to 15k miles heat up the engine and disconnect the hose going to the EGR valve. Keep engine at 2500rpm and spray 1 liter of water in there within 10 to 15 minutes. Lots of smoke etc, but you will prevent having this issue in the future.

    @@1029db Not sure who you are asking here. But nowadays, it all depends the model you have and the engine type. The newer VW TDI engines are to my opinion no good. Get one with a PD engine series and you can run 100% Biodiesel without issues whatsoever. DSG gearbox is nice, but requires more maintenance. Electrical, sure, some issues, some more common then others...... If you are not a handy man yourself and are thinking to buy a new VW........best stay away imho.

    This problem can also be caused by broken vacuum lines. If there isn't enough vacuum to adjust the turbo vanes as per demand it goes in limp mode

  • @ram_diesel_power6039

    There is also a check valve in the vacuum lines. Make sure the vacuum lines are good from the brake booster all the way to turbo actuator. It’s not a waste gate it always moves. There is a small one way check valve that is inline to the n75 valve. Good video

    The throttle body doesn't control air flow as most think on these. It's an anti shudder valve. It's sole purpose in life is to snap shut when you turn the car off for a smoother shut down.

  • @turbocharged798
    @turbocharged7987 жыл бұрын

    Good job! Small correction, those turbo are variable vein type, not waste gate. Same function, different design. Also its common for the veins to stick in the turbo causing overboost. You can check this easily by hooking up a hand vacuum pump and making sure the actuator returns smoothly on release of vacuum. Hope this car goes to a good home, still plenty of life left in it!

    @@kapulu6259 The variable vane control solenoid can sometimes be the issue, but I have seen the servo units fail far more often. As it sticks, the computer sees the boost rise above the commanded level, and you get limp mode. The reason a fault was not seen with the generic scan tool is because the EDC can store manufacturer specific codes, with a factory scan tool I can see the code for limp mode, sometimes this happens. If you cycle the key and get power temporarily, suspect the variable vane system.

  • @kapulu6259

    Robert Borchert I hear you. I do get a code but only if it goes into limp mode twice in a short amount of time. I just replaced the solenoid. The car ran great for 2 days. Then back at the issue. I ordered a new actuator and core. I will be working on that next weekend. I’m sure the veins are super dirty after 300,000 miles and a guy that drove it like a grandma before I got it.

  • @TheyCallMeBeaver0352

    @TheyCallMeBeaver0352

    @@kapulu6259 you are gonna want to pull your turbo and clean those veins out. I had the same problem with my tdi, after testing vacuum lines, N75, MAF, and proper actuator travel they all passed. Which is why I was pointed towards the vein assembly. It takes a little work and some know-how to pull your turbo but cleaning it is fairly simple just dont lose or break anything (if it doesn't thread in by hand dont force it, thread chase or tap it to clean it up) it fixed my boost issues as soon as it was put back in the car. Also if you do clean it, the TDI's like to be driven somewhat hard try shifting no less than 2700rpm if its a manual or else you will be back in the same situation sometime down the road. If you are going to use oven cleaner (very commonly used when cleaning turbos and what I used) make sure you do not get it on any aluminum (the compressor side of the turbo) it will eat that stuff away like nothing.

    As has been noted, this BEW has a VNT turbo, a borg warner kp39. I have owned two of them, one of them had a boost issue that was a vacuum hose that goes to the vnt actuator, it had worn a hole and caused a vacuum leak thus the VNT wasn't functioning (as it uses vacuum as the force to operate the mechanism).

    This often happens after a turbo over-boost, if it's a variable geometric turbo clean the vanes if not it could be a vacuum leak or the N75 valve. You can reset this fault while driving...just switch of the engine and restart it, it will reset. I had to do this a few times doing 130Km/h on the motorway in France with 1400Km still to go, just getting the car and family home...no big deal...just don't lock the steering wheel !

I have tried everything and still at times my Jetta has good power and then the next time I cannot go higher than around 3000 RPM and then you can feel it kinda steps down power wise. I have just replaced the head gasket the water pump, timing belt oil change near thermostat. Not sure if I did something to it that it does not like. Maybe you have an idea on what I should try next. I have replaced the air intake sensor. The N75 I’m not sure what else it could be Is there N75 supposed to let suction through at low rpm or at high rpm? Thank you

    ALH's are pretty reliable as is... funny I was saying "probably the N75 valve" talking out loud before you even mentioned it. They're probably the most common failure situation in an ALH or any of the 1.8t cars. Those ALH are really good cars for the money though and go for quite a few miles and pretty good abuse. Definitely VW'S best diesel engine. Tuners like Darkside are getting quite a bit of power out of them too. IIRC with just software, you can get something like 60whp.

    I would have said it was the vanes on the turbo. They always seem to get gummed up and stuck on my 00 golf and the valve on top of the engine is an anti shudder valve all that does is closed when you shut the engine off to keep it from knocking which people frown upon, it's also a safety device for Runaways if your turbo seals go out you can just shut the engine off and that'll close cutting off air flow

    Looking at my Bentley manual it refers in the text to the wastegate for the PD engine, but the picture shows an actuator rod that has to be going to a variable vane type. I know this to be true, since I owned one once. So, even in the manual, the nomenclature gets a little sloppy. On the other hand, I think there must have been a mix of true wastegated turbos and variable vane turbos on the previous ALH engines--I own a 2003 with a wastegate turbo, but don't doubt there are some with variable vanes. Also think the normally open / normally closed function might be reversed between the two, where it takes vacuum to open the wastegate, but it takes vacuum to close the vanes.

    Hey Rich got a good tip for ya with these wonderful 1.9tdi,So also limp mode no code can also be turbo its a Variable vane turbo, So a good cheap fix and test is egr valve that goes down to the turbo 20mm pipe it think about, take that off get a good can of mr muscle, with a hose slip it down as far as it will go and squirt, dont use the whole can it wont take that much, close it up let it site for 40 min then start her up, Watch all the black shitty gunk crap come out the exhaust let it warm up for a min then go to a highway and give it a boot. Been there done that with these many times, 1.9tdi is probably the best engine VW ever made, My old skoda had 900000k on it and was still pulling like a tank, Only basic maintenance done on it and remaped ;) 3.5L/100 camper trailer behind it 90km/hr, 7.2L/ 100km

  • @AR1G3
    @AR1G34 жыл бұрын

    Sorry to say this but that is absolutely not how diesels work. Air is not supplied by the turbo, the turbo is there to give you a higher efficiency. Air is always present, the engine is free to draw in as much air as it wants. The computer then measures a couple of sensor signals (for example a MAF signal), to determine the load and engine speed, and uses this info to decide how much fuel it will inject. The engine does not rely on the turbo for air supply or metering, and will run perfectly fine without it, just with less power. And indeed, the car did not throw a code even though the turbo was doing nothing. It's German, it would've thrown a code otherwise. The engine doesn't even meter fuel to air, it meters fuel to load. Diesels use an excess air regime, they run lean all the time. Even at fuel load they run an AFR so lean a petrol car wouldn't run on it.

  • @davidleet9501

    @davidleet9501

    2 жыл бұрын

    Prettty good explanation--gas turbines and diesel engines are both "excess" air engines, while gasoline engines are stochiometric, which is just a fancy way of saying they need a specific air fuel mixture going into the combustion chamber in order to run. One way to think of a turbocharged engine (whether gas or diesel) is that it makes the engine temporarily bigger (more displacement) when the boost is on. However, bigger engines lose out on efficiency under light loads, so the turbo'd engine gives you the best of both worlds! So, think of the BEW or ALH engine as 1.9L displacement at light loads, but double that (boost is about 100% of atmospheric pressure more or less) to 3.8L under full boost. Not only that, you don't have all that 3.8L hardware to carry around, either.

    4:07 WRONG, that is the Anti Shudder Valve, that operates in 2 modes: fully opened, or fully closed. It test itsefl when shutting engine off. That valve will close itself to prevent a engine damage in the case of an engine runaway ( tdi do that). That all the ASV valve does. Just a FYI. It does not control the volume of air that goes in the intake.
