The Seasons, Op. 37a (also seen as Op. 37b; published with the French title Les Saisons), is a set of twelve short character pieces for solo piano by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Each piece is the characteristic of a different month of the year in the northern hemisphere. Individual excerpts have always been popular - Troika (November) was a favourite encore of Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Barcarolle (June) was enormously popular and appeared in numerous arrangements.
ABOUT VADIM CHAIMOVICH
Vadim Chaimovich was born in Vilnius, Lithuania. His winning the First Prize at the “Virtuosi per Musica di Pianoforte” International Competition (Czech Republic) in 1991 was followed by more awards at international competitions in Lithuania, Poland, Russia and the US. In 2003, Vadim Chamovich’s outstanding artistry was distinguished with the Promotion Prize of the Dresden Art and Culture Foundation.
The pianist has given concerts in several European countries, Japan and the US, among others at the Musikverein (Vienna) and Carnegie Hall (New York) as well as at international music festival. He collaborated with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra, the North Hungarian Symphony Orchestra, and others.
Vadim Chaimovich’s recordings can be heard in several film and TV production, as of late and most notably, in the new TV series “Babylon Berlin” (2017) by the internationally acclaimed German film director Tom Tykwer.

After 12 years, I now listen these pieces again, and still cry a lot. Because my dad used to listen to them and play few of them. He passed away 12 years ago.

Unaware of any Tchaikovsky piano music, I heard _June (Barcarolle)_ at the funeral of my father's friend of sixty years. Got home. Switched on the radio. _BBC Radio 3 Afternoon Concert._ Exactly the same piece came on.

Tchaikovsky is really great! Highly recommend to listen his ballet music(Nutcracker,Swan Lake) piano concerto 1 Bflat minor,6th symphony(Patetique) e.t.c

(final period) Eugene Onegin's Waltz, second and fourth movement of his third string quartet, first and fourth movement of his first symphony, the whole first act of Nutcracker (my second favourite composition ever), 1812, Romeo and Juliet (first and third versions), Valse Sentimentale, overture of Queen of Spades... My favourite composer so far. I'm either trying to find music I haven't heard from him or other composers as good as him. However, in the latter case, I'm being unlucky. None of them is as good as Tchaikovsky.

@@RiceStranger I do suggest Vivaldi. You probably already looked him up, but I love his concerto in A minor, and Concerto in g minor. He is one of my favorites.😄

What I love about the seasons is that there isn't really any obvious symbolism. One can listen to the January piece without picturing a fireside.
June and December are particular favorites - also love March, with its melancholy feeling.🌹🌹🌹

Thank you for posting. A lovely selection of pictures that perfectly epitomise each piece. Interesting that Troika was one of Rachmaninov’s favourite encores. I can just imagine him playing it in his villa Senar by the lake.

All the month pieces have such unique styles, i just cant decide which one is my favourite or which ones are my favourites. Like take February the carnival for example, it is really joyfull, and as for October, its really peaceful. All amazing!!

I noticed that the background picture for April does not match the name - "Snowdrop". Snowdrop is actually a flower which blossoms in spring, not the snowfall. Magnificent music though. Halidonmusic is one of the best channels around.

Actually there are several kinds of Snowdrop flowers -- some blossom in spring and autumn, but the most common blossom from January to April/May in northern climes, including through snow.

What a troubled soul he was. I was listening to WQXR last night and found out that he stopped conducting for 20 or so years, and before that would firmly hold his head with his left hand while conductin *because he thought it would fall off*
