Outstanding, I heard this live in the late 1970's as a 10 year old and have loved it ever since.

The first performance, given under Ippolit Altani on August 8, 1882, at the Arts and Industry Exhibition had in the report of the performance , Tchaikovsky saying one sentence to the audiece; 'In memory of 1812' he then walked off the stage and sat to watch the performance. The overture starts with the lower strings intoning the Russian Orthodox chant ‘Spasi, Gospodi, lyudi Tvoya’ (‘God, Preserve Thy People’). Later on, Tchaikovsky cites a sprightly Russian folk tune, ‘U vorot’ (‘By the Gates’). These are clear indicators of Russianness, uniting the country’s timeless religious traditions with the joys of the simple, sunny life before Napoleon and his troops sent things to hell. Hymn at the beginning (God Preserve Thy People) Then at measure 358, right after the long descending passage, they sing the exciting conclusion (God Preserve Thy People/God Save the Tsar).

jamiesh. Well except for the admittedly beautiful singing of the opening chorale being too loud, the odd (quickly corrected) wrong notes in the brass and a string section that could have a better sense of ensemble. Performances of this work have been forever spoiled for me by the stunning Telarc multi-channel recording of around a decade earlier which not only featured superb playing and singing from US and Kiev forces under Kunzel, but gave it "the works" (not practicable here). Search as I might, I have never found a video performance that comes close (even if one omits cannon, brass band and carillon).

Some German units fighting in Russia in 1941 had their own divisional bands, some quite good. When there was a lull in the fighting or the troops were being rested, the bands would typically play for the soldiers & local Russian or Ukrainian villagers. Early in the war, one of popular pieces they played was Tchaikovsky's 1812 prelude. That stopped after 1942 when the Germans began losing on the Eastern Front. It was felt that it was bad for German troop morale to hear a piece that celebrated the defeat of a certain Russian invader. True story. When the men in the band weren't performing, they were used as medical orderlies, where many of them eventually met their death. Some of those in these bands were actually accomplished musicians who had either enlisted or been conscripted.
