I saw this on my weather app this morning. What horrible news. I also have a non verbal autistic child. My daughter loves the water as well. I used to have to avoid bringing her anywhere with water unless she could get in it. When she was around 6 or 7 we had one scare like this. My wife and I were talking in our bedroom and she decided to unlock the front door and wander off. My first thought was to run and check both nearby ponds and make sure she wasn't there and my wife started going door to door in our neighborhood and five or six people started combining the area. When I came back from the ponds I went the opposite direction and a little boy on a bike asked me if I was looking for my daughter. He said he tried talking to her but she wouldn't listen to him and was about to go in someone's backyard with mean dogs. We found her at the next house wandering around on someone's front porch trying to open doors. Luckily it was day time and only a few minutes had passed. I had to immediately install chains on every exterior door. I put cameras outside watching all the doors for extra peace of mind, so far she hasn't tried getting out again but I'm always worried about it. So sorry for this family's loss...

I'm sorry this happened but why was a 7year old autistic non verbal child unattended long enough for this to even happen?????????? It's sad but on the parents. Especially knowing she likes to wonder to the water......... Why?

So she was only 7. That means her parents can get busy and make a replacement. Maybe this time they can be a little more careful and not take any substances that cause autism in their babies.
