TAYLORMADE P790 vs TITLEIST T200 | 2023 Golf Irons Comparison

Спорт

The TaylorMade P790 irons and the Titleist T200 irons are among the most popular players-distance irons released in 2023, and with good reason. The 2023 TaylorMade P790 irons represent the fourth generation of the P790 irons, using SpeedFoam technology to deliver explosive distance and tremendous ball speed. Meanwhile, the 2023 Titleist T200 irons are the third generation of the T200 irons and use a multi-material construction to provide golfers with easy launch and distance in a compact shape.
In this video, 2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald and Michael Geiger test and review the TaylorMade P790 irons and the Titleist T200 irons, using Trackman to compare and contrast the differences. Michael also provides his feedback on the look and feel of each iron.

Alway enjoy your comparison videos but this is useful for only about 1% of golfers who generate 7 iron speeds of 95plus mph. The vast majority of golfers looking into these player distance irons are are around 10mph slower. Think your viewers would appreciate videos that relate more to the masses. Thanks

Agreed, average PGA tour swing speed with 7 iron is around 91 mph, why test faster than this? That said I do not believe this guy plays golf the way he does these tests where he can't keep a 7 iron in the fairway let alone hit a green. For some reason he is treating these videos like a long drive contest instead of an iron test.

Completely agree but it’s also hard to find comparisons doing these speeds so it’s also extremely helpful

I respectfully disagree. At those swing speeds, any deviation in the metrics is exaggerated, so the differences between the two clubs become more apparent. It's meant to compare the equipment (specifically the heads) not your swing. I can look for a video of from a 10 handicap, with swing speed of 88 mph on a 6 iron, 2 degrees upright, with a 1/2in longer dynamic gold R300 shaft and a plus 4 grip. And if I find it, I still won't know how the club will perform for me until I hit it. That's just golf.

Just got fitted for the T200s, my fitter had Titleist make them 2 deg weaker. I went from stiff to regular shafts, I wanted to hit them higher with more spin and not loose any distance. He hit it perfectly, I shot my age 2 weeks in a row 66 followed by a 69 my previous best.

Hi guys!! As the top two selling irons this year, can you please do these same two irons with the 8 iron and PW. I know they are both hot faces, but I am curious to see the differences in the scoring irons. The consistency of distance, spin, height, landing angle and dispersion. Thanks guys!! Great review!!

Wouldn't it be better to test these on an normal swing speed? No one needs to hit a 7 iron 200 yard carry.

Exactly, I agree. I went and tried a bunch of irons and cranked a few 7i shots over 200 yards with the P790s...after talking with the club witting pro, we made some adjustments so i dont hit it that far, and I could not he happier with my P790s. Love them!

I was in the market for new irons, been mulling it over for a year or so. Went late last summer when i had some time, and took a week to swing everything under the sun. Although there were 3 or 4 finalists, the P790s were just that much better for me than everything else i tried. I ended up going with the 4-PW with the stiff graphite shaft, 1/2" longer, bent 1° upright and Align midsize grips. It's almost effortless; the ball just goes. If I mis-hit from 168, it's still up by the green on the fringe. I could not be happier with my choice.

Great video probably more useful for the 85mph swing speed. Question I’d have would be gapping, the 7i are same loft but degrees different at 9/pw/gw would love to see a video showing gapping if set rather than just the 7i all the time

The visual differences between these two (I have both...don't ask 🤣) irons is deceptive. Dimensionally there is VERY little difference. Starting with the top line, the P790 is more "squared off," while the T200 is rounded and chrome. If you angle the shaft forward to mirror impact, they look almost exactly the same, thickness wise. Sole and toe thickness are also comparable and looking straight on the clubs side-by-side, you see the toe and sole thickness is almost identical...again, the T200 is more rounded giving it a slimmer appearance. Even the offset is similar except the T200 has a little more material where the hosel meets the head giving the illusion of less offset. Finally, the face inserts are seemingly identical dimensionally. Let's be real here, Titleist is marketing to a different player than TM...the TM target demo is for golfers looking for a more "players style" iron with as much of the distance and forgiveness of a game improvement club as possible, while Titleist target demo is for a better player who is seeking some help. Somehow these two offerings have overlapped and are always going to be compared. Best advice is go get fit and see for yourself.

Hit both of these on the weekend as a mid-handicapper and bought the P790s, Titleist I agree looks phenomenal but the t200 are substantially less forgiving.

I am looking for a successor for my first irons. Still the Taylormade RSi1 since 2015. Playing near a single handicap meanwhile I thought for my motivation and to boost enthusiasm it would be good to look for new irons. But what I found is nearly the same like I already own since 8 years now. And I am still happy with them. What do you think. Does it make sense to buy for example the T200 just to get a new challenge? Testing and using something new and different usually is always good.

You’ll need to figure out gapping at the low end of the bag. I used to play weekly with blades but life got busy so I’m monthly now and changed to p970 and love them but I have to carry a 46 wedge as well as the p790 pw so my gapping is right … going from RSi1’s to p790’s you’ll love the forgiveness and carry

I am curios if anybody has tried to bend older forged irons to these stronger lofted irons to see if the results are the same. I have the 695CB and i hit them pretty good but i definitely dont hit my 7 iron 195 yards. It is much closer to about 150 yards and im swinging at about 88 mph. I love my irons soo much which is why i haven't upgraded them yet. Let me know if anyone has tried to strengthen the lofts of older clubs with success. Thank you

The only benefit the P790 has is that it appears to be more forgiving at address, even though they’re almost identical in that area. The T200’s are extremely impressive this year and should be looked at by all mid handicappers getting fit.

Well…. After reading these comments this is what I have to say, I appreciate the high awing speed! I am not a good player but I have a 97-100 mph swing speed with 7i. I hit the 790 in a stiff shaft 210, carry of 195ish. I probably need to get fitted but I will be buying soon and I appreciate your content. I’m leaning towards the 790’s but I will hit them all

I tested both and went with the T200s with Project X 6.0. I am a high-flight and spin player, so I am 2 degrees strong in 5-pw to bring down the flight. The extra 6 yards won't hurt.

can you guys do a compirson video of maybe all recent TM irons, P790, Stealth irons, Sim2 Max. I feel like alot of people might be in this category, they want the looks of the p790 but think that the stealth irons might give them more forgiveness? Or maybe go even older and go to the Sim2 Max?

My advice would be to get a set of irons that you can grow into if you play on a regular basis. Game improvement irons are great for people that might play 5-10 times a year and are a high handicap... by all means go out there and fire away with GI irons. But if you're a mid-handicapper and play every weekend and want to improve, I think you'd be doing yourself a favor by stepping up to a players distance iron. And I think you would be surprised that they aren't at all as scary as you would think. You get feedback on mishits without the distance loss of a blade... that helps you get better. Tiger started Charlie off in blades for that reason. He wanted him to really learn how to hit the ball. Your next stage will be working the ball which you can do with a players distance (really tough to do with a GI iron).

Still in my endo forged J15CB. Srixon appeals to me due to being endo forged as well, but this new Titleist line looks really good. 150/200 split versus a zx7/zx5 will be my fall decision. Still don't trust hollow bodied irons into greens with the flyers.

This is a good note for sure. We do like to keep them standard in many tests just because when you step into a fitting, the club fitter will not match the lofts prior to hitting. It's all about finding the right launch characteristics for your swing - and that perfect loft might be different from club to club. We have done testing like this in the past, however, matching the lofts. But the issue with those is that either the length of the club or the lie angle changes

Basically a clear indication that the P790 is still HOT out of certain areas and can get massive jumpers. Unfortunately you guys don't show impact location so we don't know how bad of a mishit the 1.3x smash shots were. But assuming they were just a few (less than 3) millimeters off-centre, having a difference of 1.32 smash versus 1.41 smash is simply unacceptable for irons...

The ball speed on the titleist is more consistent because your swing speed on that club was more consistent. Nice, fault the club for your own variance. So typical.

I enjoy your review...BUT You have an alien hitting irons, 7 irons, 200 yd. Why don't you get somebody in there That's more realistic someone who has a swing speed of like 75 to 80 miles an hour, a normal human being to review your clubs. It's nice that you do this, but it's a waste of my time watching it. I get 0 value from your reviews from Someone who's hitting the ball that far? I played to an 8. Just something to consider.
