TaylorMade P Series Irons (P7MB P7MC P770) Fitter's Review

Спорт

In our latest look at the new TaylorMade P Series Irons we discuss why the P770 iron doesn't really fit into our head matrix, how we only recommend split sets with P7MB & P7MC and what shafts are we are seeing working well with these player performance irons.

    I'm running p790 3-6, bought a p7mc 6 iron just to see the carry distance difference was between the the two 6 irons was. To my surprise, it was minimal. 180 for the mc, 185 for the p790. Combo sets are easily doable imo

    Just and FYI. I went for a full set of the p770’s I’m off of a 4. 7 iron swing speed 90 mph. Fitted with the kbs ctaper stiff 120. These felt way better then the mc’s. I wanted the mc’s but they were a harder feel and lost distance. I haven’t received them yet, a long wait from September 9th. Great feeling club can’t wait to try them on real grass. 🇨🇦

    @@foregolfcustom Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I'll share a few golf facts that Canadian golfers are very proud of. The oldest existing golf club in North America is on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River east of Quebec City, throughout the world 11% of golfers are lefties while here in Canada because we grow up playing hockey 37% are lefties and although we have a short golfing season there are more golf courses per capita in Canada than any other country in the world. Thanks again from a proud Canadian golfer whose mother and grandparents were born in Belfast!

    Not sure guys and ty by the way really really enjoy your knowledge !! Anyway I purchased the 6,7,8 P770 and combined it with the P7MB 9 ,,PW as IAM writing this headed to North Carolina Pinehurst for 7 days gonna try most of the courses!! That said I've put this set together thru Talyormade iam 55 with many injury's a 17 HC been seriously.playing for two years now,,, from New York so part Time lol ,,, weather,,,, iam giving it a go this set I've hit it at the range never on the course and off Matt's never real turf,,, idk lol you guys got me thinking lol,, oh and by the way even though the P 770 are jacked up the lofts aren't to bad and the MBs suprise me much further then I thought so gapping wasn't a problem!! Biggest problem is ball striking contact gotta be flush or your done lol !! That's it guys thanks again really great stuff!! I know mistake I should get fitted ,,I kinda got myself not a good idea just trying it out will see this week !! Hope all good over the Pond !!

    if you split from clubs you typically go for the green on and ones that you use off the tee or as a second shot on a par 5, that would be a more reasonable spot to combo the irons. 3 and 4 iron im typically not using to hit a green with, unless its a longer par 3. but, that wouldn't be an issue with this type of combo set they are saying to stay away from.

    Interesting video. I have now played my p770s for a month. Im a low single digit hc, so decent ball striker. My initial observations are that the 770 is not a distance club. Im not seeing much distance difference from my previous set. Also these clubs are very compact. So im not sure where I would classify them. I was hoping to pick up a half club distance due to the hollow body technology. Im not sure I have however playing cold weather golf, its hard to really tell. Wheres these clubs really stand out is looks. They look amazing! I will keep hitting them over the winter and see how they feel next spring. They aren't bad clubs.

    Same. Got fitted for P770's and loved the flight and feel. The traditional lofts were exactly what I wanted. I gained 5 yards carry per club (from my Titleist AP1's) which is what I wanted - not a massive increase. The dispersion front to back was excellent and best against Ping, Titleist, Callaway and Mizuno products I tested against. With the correct shaft, great clubs.

    @@stephenharte2566 glad to hear. I've played about 40 rounds now with the p770s and they are not going Anywhere. I have the kbs120 stiff. I can report now that I have picked up about 5 yards per club from 8 iron to 4 iron.

    I disagree - I was able to blend the p790, 770 and 7MC nicely in my set. The data that I had showed me I needed more performance in my long-mid irons. No gapping issues and the 770 is a nice bridge from the 790 to the 7MC 🤷🏾‍♂️

    What club do you transition from 790 to 770 to MC? Ideally I would like to play the MC through the bag but the added help in long irons is what I'm after

  • @progolfcritic

    @progolfcritic

    @@MrDalyk2 I go from 4i-6i in the 790, 7-8i in the 770 and 9i/PW in the 7MC. I needed less offset in the short irons - those are my feel clubs. 4i-8i I just needed a tighter shot pattern and more focused on hitting a number. And the 790 let me ditch my 3i and add another wedge. 👍🏽

    We have seen significant speed differences in the P770 to the MC head that lofts wouldn’t cover. As long as your happy. Play well.

  • @progolfcritic

    @progolfcritic

    @@foregolfcustom I think this is where every golfer is a little different. I never had enough of a distance gap between the 8i & 9i in matched sets- possibly because I deloft the 9 more so the distance gaps were never big enough. I went a degree stronger in the MC, and the speed increase and higher launch with the 770 gets me to the number that I want. To me, that's the most important thing.

    Hi lads (apologies in advance for the essay 😂) Keen to get a bit more of your views on the combo set (770 and mc) I thought the entire premise of combo sets is to get that added forgiveness in the long irons from off-centre strikes through increased ball speed.(whether that's through TMs speed form or just better CG perimeter weighting) What has been your experiences to date on those transition clubs , is the gap so large that for example weakening a p770 6iron 1or2 degrees to offset the ball speed wouldnt be enough? I consider myself a pretty good ball striker but my ego isn't hurt by knowing I sometimes need a bit more help in my 3-5 / 6...if the p series isn't one to combo, any other suggestions worth investigating? Looking to get down to you once lockdown ends👍 thanks

    It’s just that where you drop the tech and materials from one head to the other we’ve seen such a drop in ball speeds that it can be hard to cover it with just lofts when there is a strong strike. The ball flight is so different between the heads too that can add to the complexities. Better to just go with the same design throughout if you’re in doubt. A fitting session will prove or allow it so see you soon 👍🏻👍🏻

    Really disagree on the combo ability with them. I'm a 'better player' and have no issue playing 770 in 3-5 or 4-6 then moving into the MC's with minor loft adjustment. Most players can benefit from a little more (it's not *that* significant) forgiveness, ball speed, and launch in the longer irons. Even tour pros. It's why combo'ing is so common now. Honestly made you guys sound a little dated on your approach. Agree on some of the small market stuff though.

    Totally disagree with these guys. A fitter that can’t figure out how to gap these probably isn’t worth paying money for. I play a p770 4 and sometimes 5, MC (strong lofted) sometimes 5 but 6-pw. And I have various MBs I use when I’m wanting to pure up my practice. The whole point is - you only ever get full true yardage when you regularly pure the ball. And early season you’ll pure it less (more 770 but same player profile most forgiveness, mid / later you will pure it more and desire more of the feel and control. My golf has never been better since I stopped buying full sets and focused ONLY on feel and challenging myself with mid to lower handicap head profile. On P790s now… I hit a 5 iron 220 when I don’t want to - nobody wants that because you start screwing up gapping on your scoring clubs. You’ll end up worse. They pop fliers WAY more often. You can’t learn proper golf compression feel with a 790 or like. And if you can’t do that. You probably have a long curve to a better game. My 2 cents. If these guys put somebody with high head speed into a P790 instead of a 770 I would say they have no clue what they are doing.

    Somebody with higher club speed in the 90 or maybe even 80-90 mph range will get plus minus 20 yard flyers all day as they go from 1 in 5 off centre to pure’ing it - which will invariably NEVER happen when you want it to… I spent half a season in 790’s and cursed that purchase. I bitched so much they put me in 770s / MCs with Tour S400 shafts at no cost and I never looked back. Swing speed under 80mph - sure 790s Over 80 and trying to speed up - 770 and down that range of profile ALL Day!
