Taylor Sheridan, the cowboy behind "Yellowstone"

Called one of the most important western writers in decades, Taylor Sheridan created the hit TV series "Yellowstone" and its prequel, "1883" (along with the prequel's upcoming sequel, "1932"). Correspondent Lee Cowan talks with Sheridan (who is as cowboy as they come), and with "Yellowstone" star Kevin Costner, about a return of the drama of the west.

"When Hollywood says a genre is 'dead' is because they made a bunch of bad movies about it." YES. THANK YOU. So much truth to this. Willing to blame it on the genre rather than own up to the facts that they made bad movies. Its the same with traditionally animated movies.

And, Sheridan is the sudden arbiter of what constitutes bad films? I was hooked on YELLOWSTONE, but the dialog has descended into predictability with the overused F word substituting for unique expressions conveying the same feeling. The redhead playing the daughter of Costner was mesmerizing initially, now you just want her to go to anger management classes.

I am from the south of Russia, Krasnodar, Western Caucasus. It's amazing how many are similar. Here, too, the culture of the Cossacks, natural horsemen, has practically died out, there are practically no horses and cows left, everything has been plowed up for corn and wheat or given over to tourism. There is also a national park with a population of bison, this is the European bison. When watching this series, the thought often arises that there are no two more similar peoples than Russian and American, although it's hard to believe, but it's true. And it is a pity that someone constantly needs to make enemies out of us.

You are more correct than, perhaps, you even know. The Russians just like the Americans moved on to a huge area of grass land (steppes in Russia, the prairie in America). Encountered a nomadic people that still used bows and arrows and who considered millions of square miles of territory "theirs" because their life depended on moving around, finding new fields to hunt, and extracting tribute from anyone who passed by. Both in Russia and America, the Europeans knew that a few 100,000 people could not keep that much land "wild" just because that's the way they had lived for centuries. Not when that much land could feed millions instead of a few hundred thousand. As if that wasn't similar enough, the American Indians are descendants of the same Mongolian people that lived in the steppes.
