The biggest model in Warhammer 40k. Sculpted almost two decades ago. Weighs more than a small child. The challenge is real!

Your ability to stay positive and only sound mildly annoyed yet mostly happy during this build is astonishing. GW/Forge World should be ashamed of still selling this piece of shit model at this price. Part of me is wondering whether still thinking it's fun to build this abomination is the 40k version of Stockholm syndrome? ;) Anyway best of luck with the build.

Your passion Nick is absolutely *infectious* and I've never played Warhammer and have never done anything with it. But the passion and excitement the whole team shows for the game, but you, especially for the process of building the models and showing all the steps really make me want to start collecting my 'Nids.

It's just the older casting methods and likely the molds they're using are slowly degrading. They can't just afford to make dozens of each part to make sure a "good one" comes out, because FW (if this is still true) makes all the casts in house, and the people who pour the resin are paid a pretty penny because they are REALLY good at their job. If FW was to re-make the casts, I'm sure they would come out faaaar better, and match up more closely to modern resin kits that (honestly) sometimes fit better than the modern plastic kits. That being said, I quit Warhammer and sold my army because of all the BS GW has been doing lately so I don't know why I'm defending them. o/

@@daringdarius5686 It's 20 years old. They should've updated and retooled the mould to make it easier to put together. Also there is a thing called a 3D Printer, that can do really high detailed resin printing, which would eliminate the need for sprews and the occurrence of mould lines, etc.

@@McCool117 I was just giving an explanation for the reasons/causes of why this particular 20 year old kit may not be up to our current standards. :) I do agree with what you've said, but I could apply that same logic to roughly 100-200 kits that are 15+ years old that haven't held up to the test of time that GW and FW need to both get to work on. I'm sure they have their reasons for not updating the moulds and plastic kits (probably because they'd be stuck in an infinite loop, but even this could be explained away with hiring new staff to fill up a department that specializes in doing just this, which should be easily paid for by their massive gains over the past 3 years) but I do agree especially on a kit that costs over $1,000 and is as beloved as this one, that they should update and re-tool how they created this every 10 or so years (even if it wouldn't be "cost efficient" because these are the models that people absolutely drool over, and mega nerds get excited and into the hobby for). Also, as for 3D printing, yes, I am aware of what it can do. I would like to add that detailed resin printing large parts (which would be necessary, if not vital) to print something like this properly comes with many challenges, including the fact that most (I will say 90%+) of resin's used for resin 3D printing have to be made a certain way, so as to be able to be UV sensitive, and not a complete pain in the ass to print with (high failure rates and high potential to damage to printer). Even the most durable resins I have seen are weaker than PLA which is achieved by FDM printers, but while FDM printing is far more durable, they aren't as detailed. It's crucial to have a durable resin be used for these projects, as your Tau manta wing falls 6 inches, at a slightly orthodox angle and bam! wing can easily be cracked in half! This type of rough handling will easily occur during shipping and handling and while that can be dealt with, if the customer drops his wing slightly, or you go to a tournament and during movement it tips and cracks, that's a HUGE mood dampener. FW Resin, as much as I hate it, is dense and durable if nothing else. I have seen parts whose cross section is maybe 1 cm^2, attached to the entire model of a leviathan, fall from 4 feet height, land in a precarious angle, and receive no more than a scratch. Now I can't promise that for everyone, I'm sure I got lucky, but the fact of the matter is I've handled many resin prints and they are notorious for cracked and breaking. Again, there are ways to improve 3D resin for durability, such as mixing resins to add more flexibility, but the end result is that it is always vulnerable and weak by comparison to FW resin. Source: Some casual 3D printing hobbyist going on to his 10th year of hobbying. Side note: 3D Printing is one of the biggest reasons/motivations for me quitting Warhammer. I printed 3 Warhound for $70 on my Ender 3. 1 Warhound from FW costs $700+ USD prior to tax, so, yea. If I was to go back and slice all the parts to resin print on my smaller Mars 2 Pro, or borrow my friends Mars 3, I'm sure I could get it to work, but honestly, the Filament ones don't look *too* bad, and a single Warhound printed using resin would likely cost around $70-80. I'd rather use that resin to print an army of smaller guys, and leave big bulky pieces and terrain to my FDM printer :)

@@PossQueen I'm still selling the remainder of my armies, but I kept my Death Korps of Krieg (those bastards cleaved them to pieces in the Compendium ;-; ) I also print a majority of models now, and have been enjoying it far more! I don't have a massive budget, but over Christmas I took advantage of some great deals and bought a few kg of PLA and 4 liters of Resin which came out to the sum total of 1.2 Executioners. I haven't purchased many models from etsy, because in general if I want a model, I either want it immediately and can usually find a similar model (or exact model) immediately and I set it to print, or I don't want it immediately but I do want it eventually, and I can't find it (like a Robotech Model), so I order it and wait and am pleasantly surprised a month or so later when I forgot I ordered it, and it comes in! :)
