JT definitely deserves 1 he’s consistently had the Celtics as a top team the last 3 years. That’s under rated. I think the fact that they have a bit more stacked team this year hurts him cause his numbers dropped. But nonetheless he should have gotten it last year in my opinion.hes def the most valuable player on the Celtics

The hypocrisy of it all is that Tatum is getting punished for playing poorly in the finals 2 years ago, but Embiid won an MVP despite never getting to the Conference Finals and never playing well in the playoffs in general. And Giannis had multiple years of failed playoff runs before his got his first mvp and 2nd mvp too.

He didn't only win MVP because his team had the best record. This revisionist history people create to win narratives is wild. The MVP standards have always been super loose, and different person to person. It has never been as simple as "who is the best player on the best team". That's why these sort of arguments are so boring and disingenuous. State your case without having to appeal to a standard that simply doesn't even exist. lol Not saying Tatum shouldn't be, I have little to no care on who wins. But people throwing out these specific stats and records as if that has ever been the thing that decides who is MVP is lazy. What it comes down to is each voter has their own personal narrative or reasons as to why they vote for who they do. There is little rhyme or reason, and its only slightly better in the Grammys in that sense. There will never be a MVP where the NBA fanbase completely agrees, and its because there is no single standard to it.

Lot of people don’t want Joker or Luka to win because they don’t like how they play basketball. They don’t dunk on anyone or at all and they don’t shoot deep 3’s. They just rack up triple doubles and kill you offensively. People also don’t want Giannis to win it because he plays in Milwaukee but if he played in NY, LA, or etc. he’d be crowned all the time. People respect Tatum and Alexander because they both play both ways and are young. Honestly if it wasn’t for the injury Embiid was probably gunna win it. Guy was killing it and beating all the top candidates head to head before the injury.

Luka is dragging a dead horse uphill. He is the real mvp.

I just don’t know when they will realize what Luka is doing. He is putting up astonishing numbers while playing for one of the most injured teams in the league and having them one game behind fifth place in the west with much improved defense, I don’t know but if they are discussing JT’s lack of recognition because of playoffs in last two years, then it seems like Luka is getting even less recognition because of last year, when he was also balling and having that team, that would be high lottery team in fourth place before Irving arrival and then they were 11th mostly because his body couldn’t hold any longer and because they didn’t have any defense anymore after Irving. So it really wasn’t his fault because he was doing anything possible to have that team in the playoffs.

Luka has definitely improved compared to his early years where he only focuses on offense. Tatum has a slight edge defensively on Luka. Luka has a massive edge on offense compared to Tatum

Tatum has given up a lot of good looks this year for the additions of Porzingas, Holiday, and White. His scoring is there when they need it but he's more in control about pace and timing now. He also has become arguably the best defensive wing in the NBA not named Kawhi. He can guard anyone, routinely gets double-digit rebounds, and is now a very good playmaker for others. My prediction: he falls short in the MVP race, but is holding the FINALS MVP trophy in June.

So can someone explain to me why Luka isn’t higher? The Mavs have had a lot of their key players miss extended time, Luka’s playing 37 minutes a game, half the time it feels like he’s playing banged up and he’s averaging 34/9/9 and his 3 point shot has significantly improved. It’s not like their record is terrible, they’re 1 game out of the 5 seed.

Best player on the best team does not equal most valuable player. Since mvp can be really controversial the award should be changed to best player award, while being subjective it’s less confusing based on criteria to select a best player

Nah, Tatums is not putting up numbers. He is playing in the by far best team. And what comes with that is numbers per default. It is way harder to put up numbers in a bad team than it it is in the the BEST team. That being said, Tatum is crazy good but not better than luka, giannis and Jokic.

He's not getting punished. Other players are just BETTER than him and he has the most help of top 5 mvp race in a stacked lineup. Tatum is rarely the best player in every game in a single week for Boston. Jokic/Shai/Luka have to carry every night for their teams to win.

Jokic, Doncic, and Shai are the top 3 obvious in the running. Anyone else is just bias thinking.

Defense is so undervalued in MVP conversations its crazy. Just because the numbers don't show you how important defense and playing within your system are, stats like assists and rebounds (which are so often padded in today's game because of heliocentric systems) get overvalued in conversations.

I think JT should be higher in the convo but no he isnt the MVP.. yet. Sadly, i agree with perk. We have to set criteria. ASG, post-season awards, regular season awards, etc. For example: 1. no player, regardless of how much they pad their stats, should be an all-star if they are on a losing team/not even in the top 8 in their conference. Winning should matter. Scottie barnes? Ice trae? No. There were more deserving all-stars. Cleveland should've gotten another 1 if milwaukee has 2. Boston should've gotten a 3rd 1 for being the best team all season long. 2. there should absolutely be a game requirement to win MVP and other awards. The best ability is availability. If someone gets themselves injured chasing after stats or awards, i dont feel any sympathy for them. We should reward guys who take care of their body, whose superpower is being an iron man/doesnt load manage and who put winning above stat-padding. 3. why would someone whose team isnt even top 4 in their conference and doesnt play defense be even in the mvp convo? defense should matter. Winning again should matter. While i'm a proponent of the best player on the best team, there should be a little leeway here as its a convo/top 5. This should also account for injuries/rough stretch for the "mvp's" team like the nuggets are experiencing. IMO the standard to be included in the MVP convo is your team has to be at least top 3 in your conference while whoever was the best player on the last year's chip team is given a pass in case they arent a top 3 team. This would mean i would put JT, Giannis, Spida, Ant, SGA, Kawhi and Jokic as my top 7 MVP candidates. Winning at a high level and meeting a certain number of games played should be the gatekeepers before we look at stats.

I will never get over the fact that Kobe and Shaq combined have the same amount of mvps as Steve fking Nash. MVP to me has been eliminated from the GOAT calculation based on that fact alone
