    As a licensed tattoo artist... I need folks to understand what a blowout is T_T The fine line wrist lady describing an aged tattoo as a blow out because it's old (even though that one actually is a blowout but I'll get to that) wasn't right. A blowout is not ink spreading when your tattoo ages. A blowout is the ink being injected into the hypodermis (the fat) layer. It's akin to putting a drop of ink on a wet paper towel - the fat layer doesn't have the cell structure to hold ink in place, so it spreads out and keeps spreading. But!! Fear not, I'm here to explain why ink spreads as you age and how it's different from a blow out. When you get tattooed, your skin sends little things called macrophages to the site of the tattoo because, well, ink is a foreign body. Macrophages are white blood cells that act, basically, like little Pacmans that go over, swallow foreign bodies (like bacteria and such, but in this case the ink particles), kill them, turn around and leave. The PROBLEM is that macrophages don't live long, so when they die, they deposit the ink particle they took a chomp out of right where they die... which causes lines to thicken and spread as the tattoo ages. It is always going to happen and is just your body doing what it's supposed to do. But!! Macrophages are also part of what make tattoos permanent, because when a macrophage dies the body sends another one on the first one's place to consume the dropped ink. Because of this, your tattoos are always in a constant state of being crowded with macrophages, which helps to hold the ink in place where it is. That indefinite cycle repeats over and over and helps lock the ink in place within the dermis (even though it does cause gradual spread over the years). It's super interesting, but NOT a blowout and I die inside every time someone says a tattoo aging is a blow out, but that's mainly because most folks don't understand what causes the changes that aging tattoos go through. This is actually part of my 'first tattoo' chat I have with clients who are getting their first tats! I love answering questions and talking about the life cycle of a tattoo, that way my clients know what to expect of their art over their life time. That being said: That wrist tattoo? That WAS a blowout. That ink was WAY too deep. Fine line tattoos don't stay fine line, but THAT was absolutely a blow out. Wrists are stupidly easy to blow out and it's very easy to inject into the fat layer if one isn't experienced with that thin, delicate skin or if they don't know how to read their machine vibrations and sound (that's how we know how deep we are and omg I could info dump on reading your depth all day but I swear I won't unless...?) Here's a link to a great break down on macrophages and how scientists figure out what they do to tattoos, and how they play an amazing part in making tattoos permanent! www.bio-rad-antibodies.com/blog/how-macrophages-make-tattoos-last.html

  • @_katerwaul_

    Ай бұрын

    @@friday5237 HNGGGGHHHH OMG okay so!!! Depth. Depth is the bane of every apprentice's existence because to really properly learn it, you have to move to actual skin. So skin varies from client to client, and on every client the dermal layer depth changes from literally inch to inch. To really understand what we work with, there's three layers we focus on. The first is your top layer, the epidermis! This is what you physically see and what sheds dead skin cells and such. Ink injected here will not hold because your body sheds these skin cells constantly. The second layer is your dermal layer. This is where ink is injected because this is where macrophages travel (which help make ink permanent) and because it has the cellular structure to hold ink in place. It can vary from a millimeter to three millimeters or more in depth depending on location on the body and the person. The third layer is the hypodermis, which is where the fat is. This is no-no land and ink injected here cannot stay in place because the cell structure isn't there, hence why ink spreads like a drop of ink placed on a wet paper towel. Because depth varies from person to person, we learn the correct layer depth by a combination of technical knowledge (what I described above) and by practical application, i.e tattooing real people. Practical application has three different points: machine feel, stretching hand vibration, and sound. When you hit the dermal layer, the vibrations in your machine change. I describe it as a sort of... deep hum, but it can vary depending on your machine and voltage. It's important to be familiar with your machines so you can learn how to feel the changes in them - for example, my Bishop packer feels like a bass drop when I'm in the right layer, but my Mast Archer is akin to a bee buzzing. (There's a few very technical reasons behind the reason why machines sound different from one to the other when you're at the correct depth, such as stroke length and such but that's all for another chat though I'd be so happy to dump about that too.) Second, the sound of the needle changes, where in addition to the familiar buzz of the machine it makes a faint sizzling sound (kinda' like bacon frying!). You have to listen close for it, but it's there. Last, the vibration in your stretching hand changes, so maintaining a proper stretch and keeping correct anchor points is key in finding the dermal layer. Because there are multiple factors to monitor, it can take a good while to master depth, but it's also why even the most experienced tattoo artist can still have issues with blowouts and why most tattoos have tiny ones and they shouldn't be considered a bad thing unless... well. They're SUPER bad or very obvious. It's just the nature of tattooing and perfection is not possible, though as tattoo artists we should always, ALWAYS be striving for improvement and to do our best. That being said, consistently blowing out tattoos in obvious ways is a sign of poor technical application (i.e they do not understand the above points or are inexperienced) so please, always always always familiarize yourself with an artist's body of work and look for healed photos before getting work from someone you're unfamiliar with. Skin is a living canvas and it is different for every individual, so it's crucial to learn how to feel and listen in order to apply a tattoo correctly. It's often why we tattoo ourselves first so we can learn without hurting a client (and also so we can know what it feels like to go too deep, and to know how it feels getting tattooed by us

    Yes! Thank you for saying this. I feel like people use the word "blowout" for every change in the tattoo's life cycle. I don't think there is a correct word for "lines get blurrier as it ages" so everyone just reverts to "blowout" since to the general public, blowout=fuzzy lines. I would also love more info-dump if you're willing! I love hearing about the scienitific processes of tattooing! Tattooing has been around for thousands of years, but we've only bothered researching it in the last ~30 years.

    That is super interesting. I studied immunology in at uni, we never covered how the immune system responds to tattoos, and since I developed an interest in them, I have wondered what happens beyond that initial response to injury & the foreign body.it never occurred to me that it would be a never ending cycle. I'm curious if people who are heavily tattooed see that reflected in their blood work even once they are healed. I do wish they had taught us about that in uni, my immunology prof was super cool, I'm pretty sure if it was something he was knowledgeable on, he would have shared. That said, from your link, it looks like most of the research is fairly recent (published within the last 8 years) and since I graduated 20 years ago, perhaps I was just a little too ahead of my time. Bookmarked to read fully & dig into the linked studies later, thanks for that.

My logic as a parent since she became a teen has always been "it's your body/life, I'll give you the warnings why something isn't a great idea if it isn't but ultimately I'd rather you do it safely" that does for piercings, tattoos, sex, drinking. My choices about her life ends at her ability to be autonomous.

    I don’t think it’s necessarily ridiculous if it’s warranted. I was just reading an article about “Black Alien” and his mom has every right to cry. With that being said, his is such an extreme case of body modification, likely stemming from mental illness. I can also see how parents of certain cultures or religions would be upset. Like I can no longer be buried in a Jewish cemetery. That was never a problem with my parents but definitely would be for some. Other than those very specific examples, I would tend to agree.

Someone else commented some very good reasons a parent might be upset. You also don't know the aftermath. You're painting it all with one brush and acting as much an intolerant bully as you claim these parents are because you don't agree. You then add the snide remark of they should go talk to someone's whose life is worse. As if someone else's difficulties should be a lesson strictly to satisfy your argument. And the cherry on top is you seems to think it's fine for these children to hide things from their parents and not discuss it or for them to rudely spring something on them as they're already dealing with the child leaving. Just because your child has free will doesn't' mean if they want to have a decent relationship with you as a parent, they shouldn't have some understanding or respect.

    @shinobusora yes and no. Its usually a combo. If you've got good veins and are well hydrated, looking for veins combined with feeling them is the best option. As a frequent ER/hospital visitor, I can assure you there are many times they can't feel them and have to study the arm/hand hard to work out where to start feeling. They will also bust out an ultrasound machine if it's particularly hard. My veins are always super easy or super hard. I've even had them have to draw out of my knuckles because every other vein was too deep/collapsed to find any other way. Of course, tattoos can also be a benefit - my artist is another frequent flyer at hospitals and a nurse herself. She knows there is a vein in a particular intersection of her tattoos that is her best performer 🤣

Drugs and alcohol made for bad meat as disgusting as it sounds. I’m not sure why serial killers wouldn’t like tattoos other than what was mentioned that it makes a body much easier to be identified. If you have tattoos on every part of your body, they basically have to rip your flash off. I wanted a Samsung Galaxy Watch for the longest time, but the damn things would lock tattooed people out. Since it decided whether it was being worn by checking a pulse with the light on the back, and the tattoo blocked it, it constantly locked. I got a Galaxy Watch 5 when they finally added the option to turn that off! Still, my heart rate and all that other stuff don't read accurately through my ink, so the only health-related use that works is as a pedometer. Looking absolutely beautiful, Lauren! Thanks for the great content, and don't worry about if you need to take your time sometimes! 😊

    I have a Apple Watch i wear it in my left wrist, my right is a full sleeve, but I do have a bee tattoo pretty close to the watch band. So when I take my watch off all you see is tanned hand, white as paper wrist 😂 but I’m very short so my tattoo on my forearm takes up my whole arm

    See but this stuff makes me wonder if those watches even work for people with darker skin tones? Is there a reason that ink specifically would block it, while melanin doesnt, or are these watches only for white people (and if so wtf)

  • @saintblackangel

    @saintblackangel

    25 күн бұрын

    @XemeraldXD unfortunately, I know that some folks with darker skin and some with hairy arms have had the same sort of issue - from what I understand, the light just doesn't penetrate well. Before I bought my watch I read through forums where some POC were talking about how even the workarounds didn't work for them. I would hope that the industry recognizes just how many customers they're alienating and are looking for a better way to perform those functions so that almost everyone can use them.

    Laser isn't precise enough to clean up that one tattoo with the stars in a way that wouldn't require a cover up/clean up tattoo. The way your body breaks the ink down and processes it is so unpredictable. I've had laser in that exact spot on a fairly symmetrical design and it did NOT fade in the ways you'd expect. 3 sessions got me a perfect fade for cover up though!

    My husbands tattoos bother him far longer while healing than me, I have basically minimal discomfort for a day or two and then have to remind myself to do aftercare. My husband has to schedule his tattoos around his work schedule because having a fresh tattoo in a steel mill wearing 2 protective layers of clothing and a heavy coat to do his job gets way too miserable. What’s crazy is I have two autoimmune illnesses and one is specifically concerning my skin so my thought is the meds I’m on are actually helping my healing
