I just had my first tattoo a week ago. I’m a 29 year old girl and very afraid of needles, but I can proudly say that I sat through 3 hours without making a sound (surprisingly it didn’t even hurt). I got Majora’s mask from The legend of Zelda on my right shoulder, full detail and full colour :3

One of my brothers collapsed, hit his head, and passed out on his first tattoo. He was fine, so it's funny. But it was a definitely a learning experience for everyone involved. He learned the limits of his pain tolerance, and I learned to avoid collarbone tattoos until I know I can handle it. I don't know what the artist learned, but I'm sure they learned something from it all.

Not a tattoo artist, but I am an artist. I designed my very first tattoo years before I got it, and was DETERMINED not to make a sound throughout the entire process. Oh yeah, it hurt like hellfire… but I didn’t scream. The only thing I said during the whole thing was a “sorry!” here and there whenever my muscles twitched. 10/10 would def do again lol

Im a tattoo artist. I've seen so many crazy things happen man. One time a dude just straight up fell asleep snoring his head off, another time three girls came in together and all threw up during their tattoo, plenty of people screeching loudly through their tattoo, had people come in with their own design but then dislike the design so much they left crying without even getting the tattoo....it goes on and on

My thighs were killers compared to my arms, especially as we got close to knee and groin. I will sit quietly and very still if it hurts and I had to stop mid sentence when my artist got too close to my knee on my one thigh tattoos. She’s done a few of my big tattoos though so she recognizes those cues.

When I got my tattoo (only one so far due to money) I hadn’t eaten much before hand. About halfway through a fairly simple tat I asked “am I supposed to feel hot?” It was slow that day so the shop owners were hanging out with us and everyone just kind of froze before rushing to get me some sugar. Pops shoved a handful of jellybeans in my face telling me to eat it. For some reason I ate the entire handful at once 😅

I astonished my artist with how calm I was when I got my first tattoo (a kitsune on the back of my shoulder). Brought a book with me and just sat there reading while my back was inked, for an hour and a half. Same for the other four. When the peacock feather on my right forearm was done, I was watching my finger vibrate as the tip of the feather shaft was done over my wrist bones and trying not to laugh

My first tattoo is 6 inches long and 3.5 inches wide on the inside of my forearm. It hurt so much. Didn't cry, faint, puke, or whatever. Some people have low pain tolerance. My artist didn't even realize it was my first until he was halfway done with the outline.

Not a “tattoo virgin” story but I recently got my entire throat done with an owls face. I’ve never experienced so much pain in my life, not only that for some reason every so often my left leg would jump straight up into the air. My tattoo artist asked if I wanted to stop and I pushed through that 3 hour session. Surprisingly the middle of the throat didn’t hurt nearly as bad as the sides of the Adam’s apple.

I got my first tattoo when I was 19 (in 1999). It was a small Celtic tribal knot on my chest (again, it was the 90s). Because it was so intricate and the lines so close to each other it really hurt but I didn't want to look like a silly girl, so I bit the bullet and stayed dead quiet. However, as soon as the artist finished the outline I loudly announced "Enough!!!", got up, paid and walked out. Years later I got that tattoo covered up, and have 16 very large tattoos and counting. But that first tattoo moment still makes me cringe.

  • @jaredkennedy6576

My first one went pretty smoothly. I got my kid's names and birthdays on my arm, and the assistant kept laughing about how much it was going to hurt and how he really dug the tattoos in. Pain wasn't bad at all, but now eight years later they look like decades old prison tats because the "artist" dug in so deep. All blown out and smudged together. I also had my wife's name done on my chest a couple months later, and it's equally terrible. It doesn't help that radiotherapy bleached it out a bit either. Now that she's my ex, it's getting covered up as part of a mastectomy tattoo.

I had my first tattoo about a half a year ago. Not a large tattoo, but intricate. Took 4+ hours not including her drawing on the tattoo and designing it right there, we went so long the studio technically closed. Although it hurt, I we went steady the whole time. I purposefully got it on my shoulder because I know it doesn’t hurt as bad, and I love the result!! 100% worth it.

I just got my first. I don't think I put my guy through hell but mine is on my shoulder, and he went “bring your shoulder to me” about half way through, but goddamnit I was very, very, very confused. I had no clue what that meant. I just did this little shoulder shimmy thing he looked like I just just started speaking alien. All he said was just “no... Just... Move closer to the edge of the chair-” I barely spoke the rest of the way. I have no clue why I was so embarrassed. But I was. Otherwise I sat what I thought was really well, no complaining, no breaks, no crying, actually pretty calm (I think I fell asleep) only had a little tension reaction in my calf that shocked me when he got closer to the top of my shoulder. And now I have to call him back to get it corrected :/ turns out Grandma was NOT born in 1945...

If you suspect you're dead inside there are probably some deeper issues that you need to deal with somehow... Anyway for tattoos I think it genuinely varies a lot how much pain people actually feel in the process, even for tattooing the same body-part. Some claim no/almost no pain, other really intense. And some even fall asleep (not passing out, that's different). For me getting a tattoo felt like someone was cutting in my skin with a knife, it was pretty intense but not beyond what I could handle and manage to stay physically calm, not without fear. But I thankfully brought hearing protection, because the sound of that tattoo machine would have been the worst otherwise and probably push it over to where I actually couldn't handle sitting there. I wonder how many of those people are actually freaked out by the tattoo machine sound, and may have been a bit calmer if it was muted. Either way tattooing was nowhere near as bad as when I tried to take the CPR test, never fully finished it, couldn't handle it even for one second and never going back under any circumstance

I got matching tattoos with my bff as my first tattoo, and it's a really cute small butterfly on my bicep, and it barely hurt. The way I always describe the pain is a bee sting. The thing is, though, I've never actually been stung by a bee, so it feels like what my idea of getting stung by a bee would feel like.

I fainted once, when I got my shoulder tattooed, I had gotten off work and hadn’t eaten for a few hours. My artist noticed I was fading, gave me a bottle of water, I dropped it everywhere. I had a snack and finished the tattoo. The only other one that came close was my bat skull on my calf. It was totally my fault- I was not feeling well all day and had been feeling really uncomfortable in the studio (it was a studio I had never been in before and have never gone back to for personal differences with the owner). I finished that tattoo too. My thighs were pretty rough, but I love them.

Got my first tattoo at 18 after wanting it since I was single-digit-aged. Anklet of roses. I sat well, didn’t scream or shout, but then she got around to coloring in the roses on the back of my ankle. My first tattoo was a soldier memorial tattoo to commemorate all my relatives who served during WW1 and WW2, it spans the entire length of my back (line art was 4 and a half hours, colour was 3 hours) and I’ve always had a high pain so I think that’s why I lasted so long. I was also going through an ED at the time, I’m so glad the artist didn’t ask about the concaved shoulder blade. It hurt but it was fine after, it was an by an apprentice so I got to go back to get the soldier silhouette touched up. So fucking worth it I’m glad to have a piece to commemorate them.

Tat looked good except it said Norde de Carolina I believe it was spelled. My tat was a wizard and mushroom guy. I showed the artist the tab of blotter acid with the design on it. When she started doing outline I dropped the acid and one of my funnest tats.

As i was the first to get my tattoo, I was sat in the chair and i was proceeding in getting the tattoo on my right forearm. My older brother was waiting in the parlor waiting room, and all he heard was me saying "oh my god, oh my god, OH MY GOD!" I took it the best i could: got some nuggies, a dreamsicle frosty and fries from "wendy's" got home, ate my lunch, pet a cat, and then took a nap. My medical condition requires me to take shots and go to the hospital and get IVs a lot, but because of where the needle was for the steroid shot I nearly passed out and got sick for about five minutes afterwards. It was explained to me as my body basically saying "fuck no" to the foreign object entering it.

I’m a tattoo artist now, never had a bad “tattoo virgin”. But a couple of years ago me & my friend got a tiny bff tattoos on our ankles, and while I didn’t feel a shit and was pretty calm about it, she was FREAKING OUT. She started to cry even before the procedure because she got both scared and sentimental at the same time, and when the procedure started, she was almost bawling out of fear, then passed out, woke up, and after first five minutes she literally ran out of building to smoke a cig to calm her nerves. After that everything went pretty smoothly, but gosh, that first 30 minutes of waiting and tattooing felt like 30 years, both terrifying and hilarious af. She’s fine now, recently got another tattoo from me, and was really chill about it this time :)

My first two tattoos (upper left thigh and upper right thigh) were a bit rough (especially the inner thigh) but after getting used to it, I started working on my full leg. If you've never had a tattoo before, here's what to expect: Note: Ask your tattoo artist for pre-tattoo prep recommendations (for pain relief) and aftercare instructions before getting the tattoo. If they don't provide you with anything or tell you to just look it up online, go somewhere else. A good TA should be able to give you advice, and they'll likely tell you some or all of this. If anything they say conflicts with anything I say, listen to them, not me. If you're not comfortable with the answer you get, go somewhere else. You should not get tattooed by someone you don't feel comfortable/confident in. 1) Don't drink any caffeine 24 hours before the session. No soda, no coffee, no caffeinated tea, definitely no energy drinks. 2) Eat a light meal like an hour before the session. Don't go in with a full stomach or an empty stomach. 3) Take a pain pill ahead of time. 4) Apply lidocaine creme or spray to the area you are getting tattooed about 30-60 minutes before the appointment, and wrap the area in plastic wrap to seal it in and protect the area It's going to hurt. You're getting stabbed with a needle over and over. It feels like someone snapping a rubber band against your skin repeatedly. Beauty is pain. After the tattoo: - Your TA may apply a protective cover (saniderm) to the area, or they may not. If they do, follow their instructions for how long to leave it on. Don't fuck with it before then. - After the saniderm is removed (if applicable) or if you didn't get that, wash the tattooed area with antibacterial soap (your TA may have a recommendation) and whatever cream they recommend using. - The affected area will likely itch as it's healing. DO NOT SCRATCH IT. If you need to alleviate the itching area, tap/smack the skin lightly. - When showering/bathing, and drying off, do not scrub the freshly tattooed area with a towel. Pat it dry.

Story unrelated to advice: When I was 19, I was engaged to an abusive partner and was planning to leave them after safely getting my things out of their house. After the incident that was the final straw for me (the one where I made up my mind that I had to begin sneaking my stuff out), they said they were going to get my name tattooed on them to prove they love me. I could have said nothing, but I just told them not to because it was bad luck. Well, they did it anyway. And 3 weeks later, I broke up with them as planned. 6 months later, they stalked me, found me, and showed up to introduce me to the person they had just married. They did not have the same name as me.

Lol my brother took me to get a tattoo awhile back…. He had a few already and warned me that the process wasn’t fun, especially since I wanted one on my ankle. He’d also told me that for most of his tats, he’d had to tap out and take a break for a minute before getting them finished. Said it was okay if I had to do the same and wouldn’t judge me. I kept telling him I wasn’t worried about the pain. Reminded him that my pain tolerance is through the roof thanks to some medical issues I’ve dealt with, but he’s never believed that the pain from said issues were that bad. He always thought that I just wasn’t managing the pain well and that’s why I’d be incapacitated for days on end. Needless to say both he and the artist were surprised when the needle touched my skin and I started laughing. Even if I wasn’t worried about the pain, I’d expected it to be a lot worse than that. The best way I could describe my experience is ‘a bit uncomfortable but nothing more.’

I have 2 stories of myself: First tattoo I got on the inside of my hip, at an angle, and was about 5x the size I had been thinking of. Didn't pass out, get sick, or anything else. Just a lot of clenched teeth. HS BF tried to get run over trying to cross the 4-6 lane highway to go get himself snacks...... 2nd tattoo with the same artist. She asked me about 6 different ways if I was ABSOLUTELY SURE I wanted two names on me forever. Still don't regret it over 10 years later. It's a memorial tattoo for my great aunt, who I am named after and look like, and her husband.

I really can’t comprehend people freaking out or feeling pain in easy pain tolerance areas saying it hurt a lot. Mines just felt like annoying burning water on my skin with moments of no pain at all. Weird thing tho, nobody else I talked too (even people with small tats) say’s it felt like that for them.

I got my first tattoo back in September and it wasn’t too bad. It was a four hour session on my forearm and it didn’t hurt as much as I thought it would until the last half an hour, but I never cried/flinched/screamed. Did cuss a little by the end, though. 😂

I gotta say tho, honestly, throwing up is no general sign of how good someone can handle stuff like this. I have multiple tattoos. Had 5h+ sessions before with no struggle. But my most recent leg tattoo, which was 2.5h, had me throw up and pretty much collapse afterwards. Sometimes you just have a bad day.

My first tattoo was a six hour upper back tattoo. Everyone keep telling me it was too much and I would never last the whole session. I sat for six hours and didn’t complain once. Was absolutely fine for the whole session and even had a good chat with the artist while he was working. Not all first tattoos need to be tiny.

I got my first tattoo three or so months ago. It’s a pretty decently big piece. It’s the entire length of my outer thigh, and it’s in color so it took two 5 hour sessions. The first session was quite painful. But I didn’t make a scene in the slightest. It was really sore after and I could barely walk. The second session was a breeze. I didn’t feel sore at all. I still don’t get why.

Lol I made the mistake of my first major tattoo being a giant black crow. I had gotten a couple piercings done there and when I came in for the first session, I had forgotten to eat and when he started the outline, my leg was shaking. He had to hold my leg down for the outline. I didn’t yell or anything but 4 hours in and the shading got to the under part of my knee, I saw white and had to schedule to come in again. Never made that mistake again

Both of the tattoos I currently have were birthday presents; the first was LOSER in black with a red V over the S across the outside of my right fore-arm (like the cast on Eddie from the movie IT) with some slight personalization (black letters are in a typewriter-style font that looks distressed and the V looks like paint brush strokes, there is also red balloon above the S+V with the string tied to the top curve of the S) I'd always wanted it as a tattoo since I'd first seen the movie, so my mom took me in to have it done for my 21st birthday since partying and alcohol isn't my thing, I knew it would be a breeze sine I've walked out of every car accident I've been in (which is six but that's a different story). The artist is a family friend and loves to talk about his favorite pieces, one of which is mine and and he was so happy that I was so chill the entire time(since he was expecting me to be a cryer). I think the only time I said anything about the pain being bad was when he did the bottom of the V since it's like right on top of bone, even then I said something kind of jokingly to let him know that it hurt. My other tattoo wasn't done by him, but by my mom's (now ex)husband's daughter it's a scarlet macaw perched on a branch, with the macaw in color and the branch+leaves in grey-tone; it's on the outside of my right calf. That one hurt a bit more since it took about 6 hours (technically 5, we took a lunch break 3 hours in) and spans from like a couple inches above my ankle to a couple inches down from where my knee bends.

My first tat was along the spine, simple line thing, but good that my instinct when under pain is tense up so I was basically a rock during the process. It's not very painful to be honest, better than what I expected and heard from rumors. The later two were way easier. Piercing is another story lol, I didn't feel a thing too bad to bare during the helix but after I feel sick and dizzy, no pain, I was relaxed and well fed, just got random dizziness off a simple piercing.

Went to a local tattoo shop to look at their work in preparation for my first tattoo. As I'm looking through the albums the shop is suddenly flooded with Hell's Angels' top people wanting to go over the bookkeeping. Like, the international top people! I knew it was their shop but 20 yo me noped the frick out of there as inconspicuously as possible. Still came back to get the tattoo though because they really had the best artists in the city. Didn't hurt as much as expected and I still love my ankle tattoo more than 20 years later.

I'm 16 so everyone was super surprised at how well I took it, and I had it done in one sitting (non-stop tattooing) and it only took about 45 mins. Im honestly surprised I did so well too, I thought it was going to be way worse than it actually, some areas did hurt more than others though, like closer to the bend of my elbow was probably the worst part. But over all it wasn't that bad and I really like my tattoo which is all that really matters.

Tattoo artists have numbing cream too. Don’t be afraid to use it- we have that magical stuff for a reason! Any artist who’s a d:ck about it doesn’t deserve your hard earned and saved money *or for their art to be on your body forever. But also don’t be a d:ck about the screaming. Bite your lip, squeeze your hands, ask for breaks or a bin. They deal with puke they just don’t want it all over the floor. Much easier to throw it in the trash bin outside. Let them know if you feel faint or especially if you need a snack or drink. Keep your blood sugar up. You know all that good house keeping shite. People don’t seem to realize that pain feelings, and pain thresholds are entirely different for different things. The more tattoos you get the more you get used to them. However different areas are more sensitive than others, and it’s different for every single person. So it’s imposssible to watch those inked videos or reaction videos and be like “oh it was easy for this client so it will be for me too” no. That’s not how it works. And even if you have an incredibly high pain tolerance say for migraines (inner body pain) or for someone hitting you (blunt outer body pain) that is not the same as a sharp needle pain. Piercings are somewhat similar. Really best you can do is get tatted and be gentle and kind to yourself. Be honest to your tattoo artist from the start and let them know ey please be kind it’s my first time. Do a test to make sure you’re not allergic to the ink they’re using as well..

Thats literally what tattooing is. And not everyone screams/has to scream as a reaction to pain. For me getting tattooed kind of felt like someone cutting in your skin with a knife, but I did manage to stay still and quiet. You also need to kind of find the technique to calm yourself down and be more resistant to impulses, but if the pain it too extreme it can still fail. I found it helps to close your eyes and not look at when the needle will hit, as well as wearing hearing protection cause that sound is awful. Maybe some people just lack the ability to stay calm
