Tate Cemetery | Savanna La Mar, Westmoreland

In this video, I visited Tate Cemetery and took a tour into the history of some of its dead. An interesting look into the lives of those buried there.

Thank you for this presentation. You asked, and I am responding. At 44:39, you presented the final resting place of Ms. Mary Atkinson, my great-grandmother, and two graves later, Keith Smith, her grandson and my uncle. Uncle Keith died at the age of 19. He lived at 55 Hudson Street, Savanna La Mar, but worked in Kingston/St. Andrew for his uncle, E. Jamison (Uncle Harry, also known as Frenchy), the brother of Mary Atkinson. Uncle Harry owned a grocery store in Kingston. Uncle Keith was taking the money to the bank, as he did on a daily basis. I have often questioned why he didn't give up the money to spare his life; he feared that it would have been said that he was part of the conspiracy to conduct the robbery. I don't know him because he died before I was born, but my mom always referred to him as her favorite brother. On another note, you mentioned in your video that you don't know why they built the graves on the ground. I believe that many of those folks were interred in the dirt, but the graves were later converted to concrete.

Interesting to hear from a relative of persons buried at the cemetery. In the Gleaner articles, I did read that MR. Ernest Jameson was also called 'Franchie." Indeed, Keith died a hero and I was hoping to find a photo of him in the Gleaner. Thanks for responding to my request in the video.

Visit a few old churches around the island that have burial area on their compound. Churches like Baptist, Anglican and Roman Catholic graves can give you the names of the shakers & movers of the communities back then ; particularly those graves closest to the church building. Looking forward to some of those videos . The last street u were on in the Tate Cemetery video is Great George St. The street along the cemetery is Dalling st. Next time ask someone to tell u the names of the street. Nobody would trouble u at the cemetery next door to Tate. They would be happy for the free advertisement. Continue with ur work. I find it interesting.

The Hamity family was known personally to me as their services were used by my brother's father during the early 70s to the early nineties. They were and still are a family of lawyers that are still practicing today. My recollection of the young son who died was extremely hard on the family, who spared no cost to restore his health, but as faith would have it, he lost his fight. money can not spare you when it's your time to leave, and this is a good example. We live. Therefore, we die. We can only leave a positive legacy and good memories behind. Thanks for all you do, hotep.

I've never been to Westmoreland before, could do with some upgrading, that's how it's is when you gone, most of the time the same said way that you are rejected by relatives when you're alive, it same said way your buriel spot is neglected, it's so disturbing . I can assure you that so many of these people who are gone on before has done some good in society, this tells you the truth about mankind. Personally speaking thiers no way i would allowed my love one gravestone to be like this desecrated, this is disgraceful. You want to tell me all these people don't have anyone still alive. I sure that some of them even fight for these people dead leftovers. Jamaican are bitter, no way ,in life or even in death anyone should have thier final resting place looking like this so terrible Where are these people relatives ? May these people soul rest in peace.
