"Tatara" is a traditional iron-making technique that has been handed down from ancient times in this area. The ancestors have dug up iron sand and iron ore in this area to produce high-purity iron.After that, a waterway was passed through the land where iron sand and steel stones were dug up, and it was regenerated as a paddy field to create terraced rice fields.
Over the years, this region has created a sustainable environment-recycling industry. The only existing "tatara" to pass on its historical, cultural and industrial value to posterity.
"Iron Road Cultural Area" consists of Yazugi city、Okuizumo town、Unnan City in Shimane Prefecture. The purpose of “Iron Road Cultural Area” is to preserve and disclose the iron culture by constructing a cultural center that is the core of the project of 2 cities and 1 town in the city, and to create new possibilities for the future through it.The history of iron directly overlaps with the history of mankind.
