Hi there, Kartikeya here! Adding info to some things Shumi and I spoke about in the video and some extra fact nuggets you might like: -The 7.2KW charger cost was Rs50,000 pre-facelift. Should remain the same. - Vehicle to Vehicle charge transfer rates - Nexon to Nexon - 50km - in 1.2 hours, to any other vehicle it is 50km in 2 hours. - If you were wondering about the digital real estate on offer - The Empowered gets - a 12.3” (centre) + 10 (driver), its 10” + 10” on the Fearless and 7” + 7” on the Creative - Motor noise is 3dB lower, which helps with the quietness - Tyres have reduced rolling resistance by 10%. The range has gone up by about 30kms. It adds up. 😊 - Weight distribution is 50:50. Quasi BMW! - Eco mode is capped at 120kmph. City mode went past an indicated 140kph. Thanks for joining in the conversation!

ev to ev charging is an welcome thing. This comes in handy at places where fast chargers are not available or further away from the location where you are at but you have a fellow ev owner who can then top you up just enough to reach to the nearest charger.

I am convinced that the idea of separating the ICE and EV videos was the best. So much to learn. Tata EV is on a great heading and their efforts show. The 12 inch brilliant screen that wowed Kartik would also be appreciated a lot by the folks stuck in traffic jams 😊 Wonder if this was the inspiration behind it ?

Even by Tata Motors standards and their penchant for special editions, they have taken it way too far this time. I agree with Shumi. The bosses at Tata Motors slipped up, they could have curated this far better. Too much meaningless choice makes it difficult to select the variant you want to buy. Nexon crossed that line and just kept on running, with someone sleeping at the wheel😅.

Using nexon max from past 6 months as a primary car. Doing intercity every day about 220 km. End of the day left with 35-40% with avarage speed of 75kmph. The game is all about speed vs range. Highest i travelled 280km with 13% left with 75kmph speed. On other hand covered 152km in just 32% with the avarage speed of 58kmph. When you are using continuously you got to know better about your vehicle.

What Shumi said is absolutely right here that the regen is designed for the engineer's goals rather than user's goals in any other vehicle. To add to it, back when I was working with the team doing regen part (not in tata), we had asked this question but the need to provide regen in a vehicle to showcase as a feature is much higher than giving a usable feature. The 7% number can be practicle although the theory suggests more than 10%, but even the testing team really struggled to reach that number. If you so aggressively focus on getting the highest regen possible, you will end up degrading your driving experience for sure.

Large Cities like Bangalore, Mumbai Delhi etc will build charging infrastructure, for smaller tier2 and tier3 cities, range is not a problem as people don’t drive 120kms a day and can always charge at their homes. It’s only for long distance travel, range becomes an issue.

Thank you for the wonderful discussion. Help me out here - My primary concern with my current Prime is that i need more range and faster home charging speed (The claimed 3.3Kw is not real charging rate - they have capped it to 2.4Kw so that the charging plug does not heat, so it takes a lot of time to charge). Should i go for LR variant (more range and 7.2Kw) now? Or should i wait for newer models - i suspect that if i wait, i won't miss on fundamental changes in the powertrain (if they come at current price point) which this Facelift does not have.

I drove the Empowered + and I am very positively surprised. It's a great package I feel. Just a query - Why everyone discusses just the math when it comes to comparison between EV vs Petrol/Diesel?? I drove Seltos ( IVT and DCT), Creta, City but none of them comes even iota close to the kind of drive quality Nexon.ev provided. Especially the Sports mode was just so much fun, the acceleration and then smoothness. None of this I saw in other mentioned cars, but still in all reviews it concludes with number of km you need to run to make this economically viable. Is there something a miss here?

Hi Kartikeya & Shumi. Thanks for such an elaborate discussion. You guys stand out from the rest. 2 questions please. I'm an NRI so my visit is limited to annual vacation once a year for a month. Does it make sense to opt for EV since it will remain idle and uncharged for the rest of 10-11 months. Secondly, I'm torn between Nexon Petrol DCA & Elevate DCA. I know the advantage of having a NA Petrol engine, however my choice is dependent on second row seating and comfort. Please advise

Great video per usual! But partially disagree with one point here. That is with respect to single pedal driving. Having had a Nexon EV Max , for a year now, i agree that single pedal driving is not intuitive. Its a slightly longer learning curve. I do 60 plus kms everyday of ORR driving, west BLR to east BLR, and after about 2k kms on the ODO, the regen is good enough that you adapt to single pedal driving automatically. There have been days where ive done the 30km to office without touching the brakes apart from the need to engage autohold. The previous gen Nexon Max blew my mind to the extent of sophistication that was on offer from Tata. And the fact that my previous car was a Indica Vista for a better part of a decade, it felt very natural when i shifted over to the EV max. And this iteration, is gonna be even better! Great car for what you get for the price IMO. Only thing i would have liked would be the option of turning off creep mode, then absolute single pedal would be possible with a bit of practice. On the range front, 280 to 300 km is easily possible with sedate driving. In my ownership experience, the worst that i got was 250km to 8% soc and the best ive had was 322km to 2% soc(range anxiety was real that day). Keeping the soc between 85% and 20% should give 240 to 260km on a regular basis once you get used to the car.

The XUV4OO felt like a unfinished project in comparison to the older Nexon EV and now with the Nexon.ev (dotted for extra pleasure?), they seem to have take the game 2-3 inches.. err.. notches above the existing XUV4OO and I think its a good thing. One, competition is always good. Customers are usually who benefit from it and secondly, the XUV4OO facelift is still in testing phase, so we can expect a lot of changes to either keep up or outclass the Nexon.ev. Offtopic, but I am wondering what Mahindra was doing after acquiring Maini Reva. They had the EV tech much much before Tata probably even started with the Nexon project and they just chose to just sit on it. They could have had the first mover advantage. But anyways, I think Tata did a fantastic job with the Nexon and even more so with the Nexon.ev. I feel (or rather assume) that the single pedal driving can still be achieved via a software update. While you talk about emergency braking, I think since the physical brakes can work in tandem with the regen braking, that shouldn't be a cause for concern. They could anyways limit the single pedal driving feature to say something below 40-50kmph. That way the issue of safety wouldn't be a concern at highway speeds. Did you guys get to check the headlamp performance of the Nexon /.ev? LED lighting seems cool and all but in almost every practical case its just overrated (Though Shumi's Ferocio could probably light up a concert). Its more to do with the color temperature than tech itself. it causes eye irritating for oncoming traffic cuz they use high beam as low beam doesn't really illuminate the road well. May be manufacturters should move to 4300k LEDs. Nexons has had the issue of being immovable if they break down (not sure if it is the case with other EVs too), have seen a few blocking apartment exits, roads etc. Has Tata done anything to address the issue?

Also did they update anything on the charging network of DC charging stations especially on the highways coz some of them are showing up on the map but aren't there when we went to that pin location. it is much needed on the highways coz we can't take much de tours to go into the center of that city get sufficiently charged and get out in the traffic losing some charge(yes one of that niche use case ).

I have a bone to pick with the Nexon. The charging is just too slow. Having it as someone's only car, you will end up doing some long distances some time over your ownership period of 5-8 years, and having to wait an hour at a desolate station to get back home can get really irritating very quickly. They need to fix that in their future models. Once you have enough range, which this does, charging speed matters a lot. And Tata have stopped the ball again

Given the limitations of the charging infrastructure and batteries in general, speeding up the charging process won't be easy. Also, electric vehicles cannot serve as single vehicle garages if long distance road trip duties are expected. Also, no matter how quick the charging times become, one will have to wait for an hour, which also depends on whether charging slot is free or not.

I agree to what Kartikeya said and wanted to add something about Shumi's remark of one pedal driving on the Tesla - based on a 13 month long ownership and 20k kms driven on a Tesla Model 3 Long Range in the US. One pedal driving is predictable for the most part when it comes to braking but it is not as accurate as using a mechanical brake which becomes like a 2nd nature to you. One pedal driving can alter its behaviour based on the battery / motor temp, outside temp and also the state of charge. I have had experiences specially during the cold winters of Eastern United states that the regen brake felt way too weak and even though tesla compensates it by using friction brakes automatically to give you the same feel as that of regen but it still feels off at times. All in all one pedal driving is still a must have in EVs because it adds to the ease of use.

Hey Kannan, the caveat is - you need to have highway used factored into your use. The regeneration process of the catalytic converter needs fast highway running. The problem with EVs in this price range is that the premium one pays against the ICE counterpart takes nearly 1-1.2 lakh km to set off against the fuel cost saving. This, on an average, would take 8 years (@12000 km/year driving). Coincidentally, 8 years is also the time when battery warranty expires, and if anything happens to it post warranty, thats 5-6 lakhs worth of replacement. Given that we have zero clue about resale value of EVs and accounting the battery factor, I feel EVs desperately need a price cut as value proposition isn't very clear. Is a price cut even possible? No. Feels like EVs are just a transitional placeholder till we find a viable gasoline substitute. Hydrogen fuel? Only time will tell.

@@shresthsonkar9207 At what point does EV make sense completely depends on in how much time one wants to retrieve his extra initial investment (on EV over ICE). In Nexon's case and for an average user, it is 8 years (so it doesn't make sense). If someone wants it in 2 years, his driving should increase by 4 times which translates to roughly 50,000 km per year, which is extraordinarily high even for commercial purposes. For Tiago EV, an average user will get ROI in 50-60k km, which is decent enough. Now what companies are doing is, in order to reduce the ICE-EV delta, instead of reducing EV prices, they're increasing ICE prices especially at the top end!

For everyone above 9k, it’ll be cheaper to go EV provided they have the budget. Regarding price hikes of ICE, it’s natural that newer pollution norms, safety norms and engine tech will need price hikes. I’m not advocating for the companies but even they have to run a business and pay people working for them. At the same time, these norms are also important to keep evolving in terms of safety and emissions as well.
