Thank´s for this tutorial. OK, must read the comment to find the 5th screw but the video helps me a lost. Today i´ve replaced the pinch roller reifen to a new one from e-bay. The old rubber was float away like asphalt in the sun. But that was not the only reason of problems. The TSR-8 still don´t want to start. Then i decide to look inside and recognised that the capstan belt is also at hte end of its lifetime. So i orderderd a new one on e-bay today. With your tutorial i´ll hope to bring my TSR-8 back to live. Great Job:-)

Hi , just to let you know RadioKilla Your instructions helped me change my belt.....but there is one more screw on the sub plate under the large group of wires that go underneath that small green pcb. So a total of 5 hold the sub plate. That 5th screw has a small collar it goes through that a spring goes around. This 5th screw holds the plate also. to get to it I removed the two other screws that hold the plate that hold the green pcb. On my machine it was there....maybe your machine is a little different there. Anyway for the other viewers out there look for that 5th screw. Thanks again!

I just replaced the belt on my TSR-8, and it works like a champ. Thank you so much for posting this! The old belt and the rubber on one of the rollers had turned to tar over many years in storage. I found a great website, terrysrubberrollers.com, where he explained the material defect that caused the original rubber items to turn to tar. He also put a new layer of rubber on my roller for about $35. I found a new belt on ebay for $10. Rubbing alcohol does wonders cleaning up the tarry mess off the roller (and your fingers), if you need to. Thanks, again!!

Thanks for the vid. Yeah as others have mentioned, mine had a 5th screw under the sockets for the head wires, had to unplug & remove 2 screws on the plate the sockets mount on to get to it, then big plate lifts up as described. My belt had turned to goo -- Isopropyl alcohol 70% on a paper towel cleaned it up, pretty messy tho!

Here’s the complete guide I found online..from the author Graham Joiner….it’s pretty detailed. Place the deck flat on its back and remove the left and right tape tension guides by unscrewing their respective caps and lifting them off (watch out for washers). Using an allen key, remove the 6 screws and lift off the front cover panel. Using the same allen key, remove the head assembly cover (two screws). Now unscrew and remove the timing roller, pinch roller and tape guide roller in the same way as for the tape tension guides - again watch out for washers and a spring. Remove the small circuit board (LHS) which is part of the timing roller assembly (2 screws) and place out of the way. Next, remove the 4 screws (1 in each corner) of the plate holding the head assembly. Remove the two shiny spindles (which supported the timing roller and tape guide roller prior to their removal) - this is best achieved by putting a layer of electricians tape round the wider part at the base of each spindle and loosening with mole grips. In my experience, these undid easily, but be aware that there is just a chance that the hexagonal brass spacer beneath the plate could start rotating instead - if this should happen, hold it securely with long-nosed pliers as you undo the spindle. Next, undo the three screws securing the BLACK plate which supports the heads and wiring loom to reveal a screw holding a spring affair - this screw needs to be removed (CARE! - it has a washer and spacer). Make a mental note of the appearance of this spring in case it falls out (as mine did! - easily replaced though) - I used a piece of wire tie to take the place of the screw just to keep it all together while the screw was out. I also removed the two screws holding the pinch roller piston (on the RHS) to make things easier. Now you should be able to lift the plate straight up (care - the flywheel is heavy!) just sufficiently to remove the old belt, and replace with the new one (which btw, I got from eBay). Re-assembly is a straight reversal of these instructions. The above worked for me, but of course, I cannot take any responsibility for problems you may incur whilst following them! Good luck! Graham

That you'll have to completely open from the back. As soon as you remove the panels and such they should be able to get at. I will tell you that this machine was assembled in such a way that it wasn't user friendly for servicing. But excellent circuit schematics and components inside. Brilliant machine.

HI there, thank you so much, the video is very helpful although I have a question, I just got a new belt for my TSR-8 and I followed your steps to replace it, making sure to put the belt on the top of the motor pulley as it looks on the video and checking with my hands that it does its job with the caspatn but there is something wrong, every time the motor begins to run, the belt slips off from the top of the pulley and it comes out or sometimes it goes to the bottom of the pulley (the thinner part of the motor pulley) where it actually looks like it fix well and never slips again, the capstan runs apparently well but I feel that this is not right and I don't know what to do, the belt is brand new and it looks in perfect condition. Sorry this is my first open reel machine and I have no experience. I have pictures and a video of the problem that I can send it if you like. Thank you and I would appreciate any help

@@Endless__Scroll hello, I actually ended up replacing the original pulley. A friend of mine who has a CNC machine, built the exact same size pulley part with a little wall or border at the edges so the belt never slips again. In different words, is a pulley with a little channel that matches the width of the belt. I have some pictures in case you need more details

I had to remove an additional screw to lift the head assembly. To get to this screw I had to remove the 2 screws that hold on the connector board for the heads. The screw holds a wire clip for a solenoid mechanism. I wonder why yours didn't have this. I had a belt I ordered 15 years ago to have on hand for when this day arrived. The old belt was sticky and gummy.

Where would you spray the liquid wrench and will it potentially cause harm to the electronics? 2.) what tool did you use to remove those 2 poles? @@rinobenenati2799 wow people are still commenting on this video I made a long long time ago lol. But thanks for watching the video. So to answer your first question. Only spray a little. Enough to penetrate the base of those pegs. But not too much that it will leak inside. Please very careful. Second question, if it's not loosening with the rubber gripping with the pliers then chances are those pegs are seized. Just spray the penetration oil and let it do its job over night. Try loosening it in the following day(s) ahead
