I JUST got a Tascam Model 24 as a dedicated Drum mixer. In the older days I only used the Mackie 1604 . The Tascam SUMPLY adds the ability to record multitrack onboard easily. So equipment is for each individual taste. I USE TO LOVE Studio one because it was uncluttered , easy. But like all others it’s now far overloaded , not simple and over the top. The Tascam 24 straightforward fast, easy AND for those who must have DAW can as well. So consider the Tascam model line BEST of BOTH worlds for YOU

Great vid noel. I had lots of the older units, even the Tc finalizer back in 2002. The vs1680 recordings still sound great today up àgainst everything else. In fact it has it's own 'sound'. ❤😊

This is a digital board/desk. While it acts (looks and feels) like an analog board, the processing is digital after the XLR preamp. The Model 16 and 24 however, are analog. Hope this helps. I have a Model 12 and I love it. I use a Behringer Tube preamp/limiter/compressor which helps give it a nice warmth making it sound more analog than digital.

I appreciate the effort and information you've provided here, but for me, when watching a video which makes suggestions on mastering, audio examples inserted at different times would've made your video a A++++. I kept waiting for a short snippet to let us hear examples of what you've just described. You've got some great gear, I've also got a Montage 61 White 40th Anniversary version, and it's now my favorite keyboard. And I've been buying synths since the 80's. Thanks so much for taking time to record this video, and for sharing your personal tips Noel.

I kinda agree, that is until I get familiar with something more than Audacity which I think is really good but it doesn't do some things better DAWs do. All this stuff has a learning curve and I'm trying to learn one thing at a time. Great video.

I use a Tascam DP-24 and use it’s built in multiband compression and eq to master my music. You’re right about the process being kind of clunky but it definitely works. Once you understand it the process is simple. Sounds just fine to me and apparently to other people as well whenever they hear it. I only use the computer nowadays just to convert my music into MP3 from WAV.

I just wished the compressor parameters was not fixed so I wouldn't need an external processor for this work flow. That would help me a lot for the kind of sound I'm looking for.

For anyone thinking about strictly using or not using a computer please remember only siths deal in absolutes

As a recovering 'hardware of die' person, I've adjusted to about 85/15. The reasons for getting the Studio12 were: 1. I can record like I have been, on hardware. 2. I can record soft synths that just aren't in existence in hardware(granular synthesis comes to mind, although there a expensive options now, e.g. Waldorf Iridium). 3. Akai mpc live, lol 4. and the most important reason, no 3rd party anti-piracy bs, this is why I truly stay dawless as much as possible. My Novation Peak doesn't need to internet to verify I didn't pirate it. This is why I will never be DAW only, ever. PS fuck ilok and any company that uses it. 5. With integrating hardware and DAW you run into scooby mystery episodes like why is the Aira line locked @ 96khz, why isn't win7 64bit pro enough for Roland Cloud, specifically simple things like the system 1 vst. Ridiculous punishments I don't deserve, oh wait, if I just go dawless, it nulls ALL of it. haha. Dear Roland, you are stupid. I'm curious why you went with the verselab over the mc707?

I’ve come to enjoy using pads for composing music, not just for drums. The MV1 looked like something we can use to create a full song with vocals without having to use an external keyboard - and it is. My usage of the Model 12 and MV1 is rapidly declining now that I have an MPC Live II. I’ll post a video about that soon…

You are speaking my language! I LOVE my Tascam DP-006, but I HATE having only two inputs when my jam band is three musician/inputs. For some reason, I have found I have to jump to this Model 12 to get the simple functionality of the 006 with 3 inputs and the ability ride pan via knobs for each track. Where you lose me is in sending me to the manual to master something. It would help to watch a simple walk-through.

Excellent talk. Folks should know that in moving a mix to another recorder for mastering, unless you do an old fashioned real-time dub you can't escape computing devices completely. You have to get the .mix off the Model 12's card and onto the storage media of the other device. Whatever yu use needs to be able to "see" the contents of the disks in question. Most folks use cables or card readers with a computer. I can do it with my Android phone or tablet. I think such file moving is possible with the Apple world too. Remember that in moving a WAV from one unit to another the sampling and bitrate parameters have to match up. I always do everything at 48/24, but if I ever want to work on a machine that is restricted to 44.1/16, like the DP008EX, the original mix needs to be prepared accordingly. That all said, real-time dubbing has a lot to commend it.

I’ve used a Roland VS2400 since 2004, I hate computer interfaces and haven’t bothered transitioning to a DAW. Too many options as you say.

My MacPro 2012 just crapped out, I’m ready for a Tascam Model 24! Going back to the 90’s way of creating, I play multi instruments and went to Institute of Audio Research back in ‘97. Thinking of getting a SSL E-Dynamic 500 module to get the mixes punchy. I currently own a UA LA610MKII, I try to get everything going in as clean and great sounding first off not to have to eq as much. Thanks for this video👍🏽. I think the Tascam DP-03 also has mastering capability?

Hi Noel. Thanks for posting your review and ideas. Was wanting to get a Model 16 or 24 but was worried about the mastering. Since I've primarily used a Boss BR1600 (awesome machine, no doubt) I was trying to figure out your idea of using the BR as a mastering solution. Since the BR-1600 doesn't have line ins (although it does have a digital coax line in for a GT6 or CD player) are you suggesting importing wav files from the Model 16/24 via usb once those have been mixed to 2 stereo tracks? Was thinking the DP24 may be a better solution, but there is so much the Boss does...it's a freakin' Swiss army knife. Plus, since the BR is 16 bit, if I imported a 24 bit song, I'd be losing that. Hope this makes sense, sorry if I'm missing the obvious solution.

I use my PC for research, entertainment and numbingg brain cells. Nothing blunts my creativity faster than opening a DAW and browsing plugins. My tascam eight track has the opposite effect. I'm looking at the model 12 because at 24bit and 48hz it gives me the headroom for bouncing and effects that I don't have with the DP-008EX. 16/44

i get it though i am dawless to.and have been dedicated to the tape machines till yesterday..i got a model 12.

Im only interested in using it for vocals because no matter what I do I have latency issues with live mic recording to my daw so I want to record my vocals on this thing then transfer those recordings from the SD card into my desktop and daw for mixing.

I was able to reduce latency with DAW recording significantly by updating the audio drivers on the PC and then trying all the options until one worked. Whatever route you decide to take, I hope it solves your latency problems.

I don't use a computer anymore because I want it to sound natural and no fakers! And I likw a more simplistic sound without the frills!

I can relate to what you say. I bought the tascam to avoid a computer BUT I recorded my band live and made a mix with adjusting faders in the MTR modus but the stereomix is not what I made with the faders.. the stereomix export seems to export just the original recording mix but not the fader adjustments that I really liked as a mix. Can you explain to me if it's possible to make a mix after the additional live recording and save that as a 'stereo mix export'? Hope my question is clear. Thanks

I just got my M12 but I think in order to have everything recorded wet in other words, the effects, eq, baked into the sound, you have to change a setting in the menu setup to Post or something like that and not Pre. Not too sure but Google it. Hope it helps a bit.

Actually, you need to record to the main bus and you do that by way of hitting record with NO tracks armed. It will record a stereo mix (with eq, eff and vol levels you set) to the main output which are considered tracks 11 and 12. Then you can export to wav file and transfer that to your computer for last touches.

Im hear because i have just recently bought a tascam model 24....for some years ive been using a tascam dp24..i still have it..... and im thinking the same thing ..so i found your video..i miss the mastering section on the dp24..and many things.....as i dont want to use a daw for the same reasons as you......tho i bought the model 24 on the idea that it has options... it seems that in fact it kinda got less on it than the dp 24....it seems that it is geared up for live band work more than studio work in a way ..any good ideas u can think of or options i can use....with both boards...would be appreciated...thank u

I used to use a Roland MV30 tracker/sequencer/sound module for sequencing. I since changed to using an MPC Live 2 as a no-computer multi track recorder, sequencer and sound module. The Model 12 is now used with the MPC when I need more than 2 inputs. It’s also used in my studio to capture spontaneous moments that happen during jams with multiple hardware devices going at the same time. I need really to make new videos on this!

My reason to Master into a Tascam Model.. as I find we lose some quality when Exporting out of the DAW..I'd love retain all that I've created&edited..not sure if I'm the only one that experiences this loss :s

I don't know how to shorten a song on the Model 12. However long the recording goes, that's how long the song is. So I use the DAW to shorten the song and do fade outs. If anyone knows how to change the beginning and end of songs on Model 12, please share your wisdom. I try ending the song where I want it when mixing down but the whole length of the recording is still retained. But I am definitely trying to go DAWless mainly because I don't like clutching a mouse for too long. I need my fingers to be for playing music.

Yes, that song length issue is a problem! It only works out right if the maximum length of any recorded track matches your desired total song length. Honestly, I often do the same thing. I use the DAW for setting the song length, a little extra compression-limiting and normalization. I also played around with mixing down to another multi-track, using the second one as a mastering machine like described somewhat in the video. That adds a tiny bit of noise that may not be acceptable to some.

I just got my model 12 and I think I will have to do the same. It really is quite an easy process though it isn't to bad. If you can record it and mix it with out the PC then just finish it with the mastering on PC I think that is the ideal process

@@noelsharp Thanks for that. The other issue I run into is that when I transfer the stereo mix to computer, the volume level seems very low. If I take a track and drag it into my DAW, you can barely see any signal in the track display. I have been using compression mainly to get the levels up to something usable. Not sure if others are having trouble getting and maintaining the right levels from recording to mixing and storage.

@@lumberpilot When you bounce down (record to stereo) to Main bus (Ch. 11 and 12) it is just like sending the mix to an external recorder. You do it by hitting record with NO channels armed. It will record to the Main bus at the volume, eq and eff levels you set them to while it is recording. You need to set your volume level with that process and make sure the meter is showing that you are at least hitting 0dB on the meter lights.

Hi,, I am probably way too young to even be on this channel as I am only 15.... I want to start recording but I'm confused by the channel part. I write all of my songs in my one keyboard & my MPC Live 2 that I just got. I typically write & use all 16 tracks on my keyboard, plus planning to do lead vocals plus some background vocals as well. So, do I need at least a Tascam Model 24 or is there a way for me to use a Model 12 some kind of way? All without using a daw..... Thanks for your help....

Since making the video I now use a Live 2 with the MPC 2 DAW software that comes free with it. That’s my first recommendation for you, using the MPC plus the computer will give you a great hybrid setup. If you don’t want to use a DAW at all then you probably should consider a different stand alone recorder that at least offers basic editing capabilities like a Tascam DP24 or DP32. I think you’ll find that a DAW will allow you to work much faster though.

The D32xd looks like a very, very good multi-track recorder. I wish Korg, Roland or Tascam could make a new one with the same type of editing features.

According to the Roland site the BR-600 isn’t compatible with Windows 10

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I was able to connect the BR600 to an old Windows 10 PC I keep around that runs in 32 bit mode vs the normal 64 bit mode. With that PC I can then use compatibility mode to run most software that was made for Windows XP. It’s a clunky workaround and not something that would be considered reliable for daily or long term use.

I don't run my studio with DAW. My Roland FA06 work station has a 16 channel squencer. You don't need to go DAW. Viruses get on the computer, so now you need a VPN. Between my Tascam Model 24 mixer and my FA06, (both utilizing an SD card) and I'm 64 years old and don't want to spend my life savings on my studio, and a computer is not necessary !

I was looking into this kind of unit because I started on a computer, and to me it's just not musical. When I write music on a computer, it feels like a video game, when I use an instrument/sequencer, it feels like music. I know you can record into a daw, but that takes too much setup that I don't care about. By the time I actually get everything setup, I'm already bored, and my idea probably left.

I don't trust computers. I have an old dp24 that's on the fritz, and I'm on the verge of getting a new one or the Model 12.

Best thing to do is hire a mastering engineer

Because we hate DAWs!👀 The limitless open format does nothing but stifle creativity. It has been proven over and over again. Ask how many top top level producers use DAWs? 👀. Why should they get all the fun

I did get side tracked - sorry! A lot has changed in my studio setup over the last couple years and I’ve finally settled into a new hybrid setup and workflow. Hopefully I’ll find time soon to explain how I use the Model 12 in my studio today along with other gear I didn’t own in 2021.
