Note: The record mode has to be set to 4Channel - sorry for missing that in the narration.
We hear about the Zoom H6 but I found a Tascam DR 60D mrk II can also be set up for a Mix Minus and amazing podcasts for less money.
The secret is to use the Cam out for the host headphone send and the phones send to go back to a phone. The headphone out on the Tascam DR 60D mk II can have a selective monitor send, so we just send the host audio from inputs 1/2 back to the phone using a splitter. If you have any questions, let me know and I'll try to explain.

A couple things: The recording mode has to be in 4channel. Also, the levels need to bump up to about -12DB to have good audio to go into post production. I've had this unit for a number of years and have been considering getting a more dedicated system until I started looking into what the Tascam can do. I also understand the audio will be separated in your ears because the hosts will be on the left and the phone guest will be on the right. I add a 4-channel headphone mixer and put a 1/4 mono-stereo jack into it and it correct s the panned audio to putting both the hosts and the guest into both ears. I didn't show that as I thought the simple setup would be best.

SM58 can be a bit muffly and has a built-in pop filter. Adding a big outer foam filter can make it sound awful. Better to leave this off and position the mic so the speakers breath is passing over or past, rather than straight into the mic. A cheap large diaphragm condenser would be much better. I see a lot of video guys automatically putting foam filters over mics, even on overheads in a studio - it's often not necessary and rolls off a lot of higher frequencies. Take a look at music studio recording sessions and most live sessions, foam filters are rarely used.

It sure seems like that should work. I do have to admit I pulled the trigger on getting a zoom p4, which makes this super easy and it's not expensive

I wonder if it's possible to use the Tascam DR-60D as a computer mic via usb?

I'm looking to set up a podcast with a host, and potentially a co-host, but guests will almost always be on the phone. With the setup you use in this video, are both ends of the phone conversation recorded mixed into one channel, or would the caller's voice be on 3/4 and the mic audio on channel 1? I want to keep them separate for editing purposes if needed.
