I know this is a joke but the reason this happens is because he's technically racing a ghost, and since he didn't win, the game said he lost, presumably because the developers didn't want to make a whole ending scenario for a tie, which is extremely rare.

@@jungleparkway On a more technical level, The code most likely asks for "Is current time lower?" which in this case it's not lower. They could have done "Is it lower OR EQUAL" which would show a win, But technically, it's not a win when you tie a ghost. So that wouldn't make sense and would frustrate when you try to beat a ghost (YOU WIN! but actually no, you scored the same as before..) So losing makes more sense in that case. Leaves Only 2 options to program: Win or lose.

Edmund Ng TAS stands for tool-assisted-speedrun(super play) It can be done in a number of ways, but it is fundamentally a program where people lay out a set of inputs for the computer to initiate and use save states, frame-by-frame inputs, and various other tools to create the optimized run. In short, it’s people using tools. TASBOT is a character used in the TAS community as a “runner” for events. Funny enough, Japan has something similar, as they sometimes use the term TAS-san.

When you've played this game for a long time some shortcuts lose their wow factor and become trivial, such as the bcwii glitch and dk summit double cut, and it was so nice to hear and see the reactions from the crowd and twitch chat reminding me of what i was like when i first saw those shortcuts many years ago. Huge congrats to everyone that took part in this!!!

All I did this time was push you to be the best you could be and all of you answered the challenge with one of the most amazing efforts I've ever experienced in my time leading the TASBot content at events. This run is huge, the work you put in along the rest of the team really shows. An inspirational performance, and thanks for performing at SGDQ!

It was great to watch this live. Although I am very upset to have not made it to gdq, I am so happy to have been able to contribute as much as i did. The standing ovation at the end made me cry, the whole thing made me so emotional. Getting the credit in such a big event felt so surreal. It’s been amazing working with every single member of the community, and even getting the pleasure of meeting some of you irl was such a great experience. Malleo, Derek, Luke and Tom were great throughout, i love you all (and dwango for giving us the opportunity to have the slot

If there was ever any doubt about whether TAS belongs in GDQ, they continue to kill that doubt with awesome content like this. And they do it in such a legit and awesome way by using live consoles and TASbot.

As a fan of this amazing community, I'd like to express my utmost gratitude to the MKWii TAS community for making these wonderful runs, and Dwango for allowing them to show their work on the biggest stage in speedrunning. And, also, kudos to Sword for his awesome performance as Funky Kong. He's genuinely one of the funniest people in the Mario Kart community, and you should go check him out.

Just watched this for the second time, and I couldn't agree more with the standing ovation. What a FANTASTIC presentation. I still couldn't take my eyes off the screen, amazed at how much work must have gone into it to find out the glitches, and you even managed to explain everything so that normal people could understand it. Absolutely stellar.

I love TAS for mainly one reason. When I was a kid I've always wondered what it will look like if robots completely destroyed games. TAS is the closest thing we're gonna get so far and I love it.

Hahah Sword was hilarious as funky, that rGV2 was absolutely mindblowing, and I love the new TF glitch and great job to all the TASers that worked on this, I wish they showed Waluigi Stadium and Sherbert Land as well, I love those glitches

Amazing TAS! I've always been a huge fan of Mario Kart Wii, and seeing this all go into effect was amazing to witness. Thanks for bringing this to SGDQ!

The commentary is so well put together with an awesome selection of TASes (especially the new Ghost Valley 2 run, holy shit). What a great showcase of this community!

As someone who played the game for several years and still keeps track of time trials and TASes, I love seeing Mario Kart Wii get some recognition.

Amazing stuff right here, it’s clear how passionate the community is about this game even after all these years. TAS runs are always a treat, but collaborative efforts like this one are even better. Nice work!

"Spear"? "Flame Runner"? I am so confused. Granted, it was so many years ago I played this game, but I could have sworn they were called "Torpedo" and "Bowser Bike" :P And mind you, I played this game a LOT. I even held several European time trial records for quite a while back in the day.
