[TAS] GBA Donkey Kong Country by illayaya in

Ойындар

This is a tool-assisted speedrun. For more information, see tasvideos.org/6033M
TAS originally published on 2024-07-05
This game is a 2003 port of the original Donkey Kong Country for SNES. This version has increased brightness, at the cost of contrast and colour saturation, to make the game easier to see on an unlit LCD screen, some new features, including new minigames, hidden pictures, a Time Trial mode, and multiplayer games.
Watch as illayaya ( tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/i... ) makes their way to King K Rool to get back the banana hoard in record time.

If you played the SNES version then you played the best version. The Donkey Kong Land series was its own unique thing so you actually have the best memories of all the 90s 2D Donkey Kong games.

Understand this was before they had the backlight or even front light edition of GBA. They cranked up the brightness of the colors to help people see, as that was the number one complaint of the GBA in it's early days. But with that said, this truly was/is terrible compared to the SNES version. Don't trust anyone that tries to tell you otherwise, adding a few more crappy features *does NOT* equal a better game.

Im more disappointed about the soundtrack, too flat, and sounds like a cheap generic midi cover. About that time rare was rolling downhill.

everyone here is complaining about how bad this game is, meanwhile i who have never played a Donkey Kong game am like "hey, this game looks pretty cool". yes i see how it's "inferior" to the other version, i've seen gameplay here on YT, but i think this has its own charm. iunno, seems like fans of something are always its harshest critics for some reason.

I grew up playing DKC3 on the GBA and now play the SNES version of DKC1 2 & 3 as an adult. Yeah the SNES versions look and sound better, but they all still have that Donkey Kong Country charm to them.

I’m a huge dk fan, I didn’t play the gba ones until way later and I gotta say, I think they’re a lot of fun. Not the ideal way to play them I guess, especially for 2, that one is almost bad. But 1 translates really well, and 3 just has a better soundtrack than the original, hands down.

Only for the first two worlds. Warps weren’t really in the original game that much, it didn’t become a common thing with the series until DKC2.

Unless bosses invincibility work differently than SNES DKC1, the 2nd World boss could have been faster.

I think I preferred the GBC version to this version - this really feels like a bootleg version. I can appreciate trying to make the best of the lower resolution of the GBA compared to the SNES (the SNES supported up to 512x448 resolution which was good for menus / maps, while most games used the 256x224 - the GBA being limited to 240x160 means that a lot of vertical space is forfeit - while gameplay doesn't feel impacted by this, the world map definitely is) and having to blow out the saturation and gamma to make up for the lack of a backlight / frontlight, but the sound design in this offends me on a deeper level as someone who played the SNES version most of her life. The kremling death sound is very luigi-ish which is amusing, and the music is mostly on-point for what I imagine the sound-chip could handle - the level complete / boss win fanfare and boss music suffered the most imo, with the instrument mapping being a bit dubious. I'm of the opinion that any donkey kong country is a good time, and if I had this when it came out I think I'd have been happy with it - probably sounds better on an actual GBA if I had to guess.

Fantastic TAS!😎 God, I still remember being so disappointed with this terrible Port of one of the Greatest SNES games ever. The GBA was superior to the SNES in every single way besides resolution and somehow they made one of the weakest ports the GBA ever had. The only port more disappointing would be Earthworm Jim. 😫

Looks Nintendo lowered the difficulty for every Boss in this version. None of the bosses have extended invulnerable attacks/rampages like the original. Really Gnawty, Queen B, Dumb Drum, Master Necky Sr would have invulnerability. Master Necky Sr. is just 2 regular Master Necky's that's lame, and it looks like you can continue in Phase 2 of King K Rool fight if you die. Beating K Rool in one go as a kid was an accomplishment. Did Nintendo think the original bosses were too hard?

@@Argedis With Queen B in the original game, you just have to attack with the barrel, wait until she becomes vulnerable and repeat. At least the GBA version tried to give a bit of challenge with the Zinger shield, having to defeat every single one of them to attack Queen B again.
