[TAS] GB Donkey Kong by DrD2k9 in
Ойындар
This is a tool-assisted speedrun. For more information, see localhost:44385/4257M
TAS originally published on 2020-08-02
This version of Donkey Kong (informally known as Donkey Kong '94, due to its 1994 release date) follows the same premise as the original game from the 1980s, in that Mario is tasked with rescuing Pauline from the eponymous Donkey Kong.
Besides adding over 90 additional stages to the original 4 stages, this release also introduces many new game-play mechanics which both help and hinder Mario from reaching his goal. Some of these new elements are patterned off concepts from other Mario games including Donkey Kong Jr., SMB, SMB 2 (USA), and SMB 3.
DrD2k9 ( localhost:44385/Users/Profile/DrD2k9 ) throws barrels at DK and rescues Pauline in record time.
--------
You can watch the complete run being played back on a console ( • Donkey Kong '94 TAS by... ).

Wow, been a very long time since I last saw this game in any form. Something I always found neat about it was them using the little between world cutscenes to showcase new stage gimmicks/features and moves that the player may have been unaware of like the handstand jump TAS shows that the walls, floors and ceilings are just suggestions rather than actual obstacles for Mario/Jumpman
17:26 _In which Donkey Kong JR helps out Mario instead of his own father. Brilliant._

@@user-uh6ml2yi5o Tool Assisted Speedrun (what this is), or Tool Assisted Superplay. They use the tools available via emulation to provide the theoretically perfect Speedrun. Stuff like RNG manipulation for item drops and attack patterns, perfect movement in sections, precise glitches and even tricks not even usable in Real Time Speedruns. Technically speaking, Minecraft Speedruns are now legally accepting Tool Assisted Speedruns, so long as said tool is a calculator, so TAS can also be defined as using external software or even hardware to assist in completing the game. And importantly, all Tool Assisted Speedruns become Superplays if they are made to wait for even a second. See Ghost Boss in Super Mario World.

This feels like a creepy fever dream with how fast Mario catches up to DK despite all of his his attempts to lose him.
I owe like 4/5 of my channel views to this game LMFAO But seriously this game was a huge nostalgic hit for me, still holds up as one of my favorite handheld games as all time, so unique and expressive for a 2D mario, M64 had some competition for its movement tools!! Great to see this up.
Watching this reminds me of how some people say video games are for children. Little do they know that games like this are a test of patience, problem solving, will-power, and learning physics in the game (this game is no acception to how many head injuries occurred). So yes, it was for children who were in for a long adventure. And when you think about it (and someone in the comments mentioned it) this game has close if not 100 levels for a tiny game boy game. It may not have revolutionized gaming, but it was a wonderful buffet of what makes an excellent platformer.

I never noticed that.
Wow, I'm having a bad week so far so I decided to check another TAS on this channel, and even though I've noticed it existed, I always thought this wasn't going to be an impressive run. But daaamn, how wrong was I? I knew Mario would do some crazy acrobatics, but some of these levels are just insanely well done. Very tight jumping which caused for a very speedy progress. Never thought you could abuse the game mechanics this much on a old classic gameboy game. At this point, I would even say the amount of cutscenes prolly takes up more time than the run itself. But seeing those cutscenes again, watching mario breeze through the harder levels, combined with a lot of big brain moments... it was a pretty wild trip through nostalgia line and you made my evening a bit better :D Thanks for making this TAS
This game on gbc was really difficult back in the day. It also is a long game for its platform.

The same way unintended walljumping happens in other games, really; hitting the wall at specific points causes the game to very, VERY briefly think the player is standing on a floor, and at THAT exact moment, jumping is possible.

Yes. It was optimized for the Super Game Boy adapter for the SNES.

It sure was. The reason why it's labeled as GBC here is that's the mode that the emulator was using, and the reason for that is given in the notes accessible from the page linked to up in the description.
