Man I was never a hammock person but how could one not enjoy shugs videos. After watching many any of them. I try an not miss any of them now. But seeing him enjoying the hammock as much as he does an coffee from the hammock ect with the tarp front raised being able to look out an relax. I definitely started buying hammock an tarp gear ect an had to give it a shot. Since than haven’t looked back to any tent. Unless it’s a big tent for the wife an kids. If if wasn’t for shug I doubt I would of even given hammock camping any shot

In part 1, that was a Clove Hitch you used to secure your tensioners to the guy line. Your loop was made with an Overhand knot (if my rememberer is working correctly), then the Lark's Head secured the loop to the D-Ring. Great reviews of how to get it all done efficiently. Thanks for the vids Kemosabe.

+shugemery Shugemery, actually the knot you tied in the end of the dyneema to create the bight was a double overhand knot. When you put the loop thru the D-ring and pulled the tag end thru, that's a larkshead knot. Great vids, thanks for sharing your hammock camping info! Will be trying out a structural ridgeline due you your vid.

May I say Sugar - may I call you Sugar? - that, without question or qualification, cavil or qualm, I find your videos (which I discovered just today) to be thoroughly entertaining, informative and really nice. How refreshing to find no reference to guns, the zombie apocalypse, prepping for the end of days, whopping great knife waving or the sundry looney-tune themes that are prevalent in the outdoorsy online video genre. Yes, I think it is a genre: OOVG. (I just made that up). Jolly good fun and intelligently presented. Well done my new sugary friend.

I tried all sorts of knots but about two years ago I discovered the Nite Ize Cam Jam. Tie a permanent loop knot on one end, then simply thread the line through the hole, pull through the cam and you are done. To tighten it, pull and seat the line in the cam. To loosen it pull it out of the cam. Done. They weigh almost nothing. They work for ridge lines and tie outs.

I'm headed out to a local park today to practice setting up my Hennessy Safari Asym Zip with Hex Fly Tarp. That way I know how to set it up next week when I'll be out on a 3 day camping trip! :) I bought sixteen Cam Jam's (8 large and 8 small) so I can quickly setup the Rain Fly separately from the hammock. For the hammock I'm using four climbing rings with two climbing grade carabiners to setup and adjust the hammock quickly. I think I'll take along my camera and record how quickly it sets up for the first time hammock camping noob!

I have used a relatively simple tensioning knot for many years that is easily adjustable. I do not know what its called. I have seen a variation of it demonstrated on a "knots lore" youtube channel. I always referred to it as the "Boy Scout slip tension knot". It works with almost all cordage & I have used it on insulated copper wire in an emergency.

When you tie your "slippery half hitch" knot, it has been drilled in my head to never use the rope line leading to your tarp as it may slip. Always use the knot end (part) around tree. For tarps, this would be okay, I'm sure, but for a hammock, last thing I want is knot coming undone. I've seen it happen. Clarify if I am correct or doing it backwards.

  • @shugemery

I'd be wary of a slipper half-hitch holding up your hammock with you in the hammock. Better to use the Beckett hitch. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aXx80MWxoMK5pg.html

Shug, your daughter is good on that ring !! As always great video and info, on your ridge line approximately how many feet of line do you use from the corner of the tarp to the tree ? And how many feet of line from the side of the tarp and do you use any shock cord in your tarp set up ? Just wondering...... thank you !

Hey bro I thought I was ghetto but now I'm seeing how you set that puppy up I'm proud to say as for the time being I'm sleeping under a tarp on a hammock. I may not have that high tight string. I'm using surveyor string. But hey it works. Do you think that if the cord be long enough for your hammock and you managed to set up the pegs in the right place. Finally the tarps right. You could not only sleep under but make the tarp like a put tent? I like a light sturdy set up. Thoughts?
