Originally the town had a shorter, easier to pronounce name: Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. In the 1880s, in a joking attempt to attract tourists, a tailor added the rest of the syllables, bringing the total length to 58 letters, including four letter L's in a row. Or llanfair PG as most locals say 😂

I'm from a very small village in England and even trying to explain where that was and what it was called to my Chinese students was basically impossible no matter where I was teaching (even the older high school students). With a proper Welsh accent and pronunciation, they'd probably just be completely lost haha, would think you were speaking gibberish... Honestly, usually saying I'm from "near some big easily recognizable city visible on the map" was the only way to communicate it, and if I showed them pictures they would lose their mind.

Those sounds, especially the ll (cat hiss sound) and the ch (the other weird one), sounds are, once you know how to do them, a bit clearer with a dry mouth in my opinion. They're easier for me with a dry mouth as well, even if they sound like very wet sounds it's all very well contained because of the positioning of the tongue. For a similar reason, I was taught, having been in Welsh Language school until I was 9, to produce ess sounds with my tongue tip against my front teeth because it produces a harsher and clearer sibilance but there other ways that produce a softer and lower sibilance. There's just a lot of small things about where the pitch bends and the different accenting and grammar that makes it that much different.

@@DiabolicalBiscuit the accent got bastardised massively in north wales due to English-made laws being enforced in wales! During the Industrial Revolution (might have been a little earlier), a law was put in place that people in wales were required to speak fluent English in order to get a job in wales (the absolute cheek!). A lot of people moved to north wales for the job opportunities and just by geographical proximity, it was predominantly people from north England (Liverpool especially) moving with their families and eventually the accent morphed. It’s genuinely so interesting to read about once you get past the annoyance of seeing our history peppered with the audacity of the English 😆

It had a customer call my work last week. We’re a massive insurance place and we operate all over the country and this guy just so happened to live in that town. And I had to confirm his address and I said ‘I’m not gonna like I can’t pronounce it but is it that town with the longest name’ and he went ‘yeah that’s the one I never bother asking people to say it’s
