I love the way Tarja & the band ROCK this fast tempo tune. She has a unique & wonderful voice in the contemporary music scene! Lots of great selections (new&old) on Act 2.

She also knows Italian. Just amazing. Add that to her fluency in English. German, Spanish, and Finnish.

This is one of my favourite songs from Tarja.

It's so funny how everybody suddenly become voice teacher when it comes to Tarja. You guys better learn with her how to be a good, succesfull rock singer with a lyrical voice. She never lost her angel voice but rather gained more power and presence. Go see her singing live, it's an otherwordly experience. Maybe this was not her best recorded performance, but so what? There are very very few capable of singing like her.

Well, people expect her to sing all of her songs similar fashion as she did in early Nightwish. But she doesn't. Want to hear her sing beautiful classical vocals? Listen her classical and Christmas songs: her vocals have never been more beautiful. In her metal albums she often chooses another, "more rock" approach to vocals though. She doesn't even try to sound similar here as in her beautiful songs. People just don't know her well enough and listen all she does.

Problem is she usually uses her speaking voice instead of her singing/operatic voice even when the song requires the latter. That's a problem. I have seen her live multiple times and no matter how much recordings I see I encounter the same issue. Can't tell if she does it on purpose or just doesn't hear herself on the stage but it's not a good thing. It makes the singing parts inconsistent and the song falls apart. Strange thing is, this wasn't an issue back then in NW live performances.

@@buek14 I been never more disagree with wht you say. If you have in count that usually she is doing long tour that means, sing, travel and sing next day, Tarja sounds very similar to albums, even she's allways jumping or running on stages. She do, indeed, some variations in tones at some songs, to make unbored, sometimes she do it right some others not. I have watched sing just 2 weeks ago and with 45 years old she is brilliant as allways.

The best example of what you say is Floor. She, one the best female rock singers of all times, had to, being Nightwish singer, to cover her in all the songs Tarja recorded for the band. In few ones Floor did it even better, and some few more Floor matched Tarja's performances. In lots song Floor couldn't tie Tarja's masterpieces jobs, and some other didn´t even try because is not her field and never will be.

I really hope Tarja gets to read at least one of these comments about her chest voice, she really needs to stop overusing it, a fixation that started back in 2004 with random songs, and she is still doing it. She has released songs for her chest voice, but the old songs should be performed as they are meant to be, with her head voice.

@@VoicedProd Her chest voice has improved over the years and she has written songs for that voice. But don't come here and tell me that these songs that were released with her head voice, sound any good with her full chest voice, because they don't. And many people agree with me.

@@deepdarkmidnight It's not because many people agree with you that it makes you more legitimate. I believe her chest voice made a few old songs sound way better and touching. Concerning Die Alive, and the whole "My Winter Storm" album which was kind of boring at first, she made those songs stand out so nicely using her chest voice that I now personally like them. Same for the NW era: I love the way she sings Nemo now. Her voice is so dark and deep now! House of Wax is the living proof that her chest voice deserves to be and if she decides to use it in every song I would not be mad at it. It's also true that she could still work on it, as well as on her head voice when hitting high notes for instance... You can always improve yourself.

@@deepdarkmidnight Plus, she never uses her "full chest voice", she plays with it but the head voice remains overpowering. Of course it's a huge change for her to use her chest voice, but her lyrical technique is still a lot more important in her songs.

@@deepdarkmidnight And finally, don't get me wrong : I absolutely love her lyrical technique and her head voice, her classical concerts are amazing and show that she hasn't lost it at all. We can also notice that since she left Nightwish, her head voice became so much clearer than before, which should be appreciated by any fan of her lyrical singing. But her chest voice deserves some room in her career and singing the same song 2000 times exactly the same old way must be really boring, for her and for us as well when we listen to it. This chest voice is a wind of change.

Tarja is the SUN that helps me. Her shining heals me. She could start RAPPING or whatever and I would still adore her cause what she means to me and makes me feel. That said, I understand all these comments about her singing.. Her chest voice is orgasmic (especially in the Pandemonium part from Wacken min 15:26) BUT nowadays she is using it A LOT, LIKE A LOT A LOT anywhere, anytime and that is not of my appreciation either cause some songs have certain feelings, certain emotions that are just not correctly expressed with the chest voice. Imagine if she sang Into the Sun in chest voice, man that wouldnt be so good. And it is not due to the quality of her voice but because that type of singing just doesnt belong there. Simple as that. Also, in comparisson to Act I where you can just put it on and hear the VERY BEST versions of her AMAZING songs, in Act II that doesnt happen cause you can find better versions in KZread from other concerts.. What I really LOVE is that she is very very Happy and emotional so I really dont care much about these details. Love you Fierce!

I don't even think the voice is that bad, but she pronounces the vowels really weirdly and it makes weird effects. Maybe just excitement.

Eva M I have no problem with the accent. She always had a strong one. I have too when speaking English... that very poorly supported middle tone is what drives me nuts. Specially accentuated on the vowels...

Nothing that Tarja does is by accident xx “Live videos became more and more mere documentations focusing on a band’s performance in a remote, distant and technical way. The lightshow and the LED’s only support the band’s performance but have no significance of their own. With “Act II” it is different. Here everything has a significance, every little detail is important because it is not only a live-recording, a live-documentation. In the video, every song was treated in order to transport the feeling I wanted to express live at the show. As close as possible to the way the audience might have felt it that night. We used additional footages, used video snippets, photos and graphics and worked with lights, framings and reflections, changed colours and created moods, distorted pictures and inserted slides. And sometimes we kept the pure picture because itself it transported everything we wanted. “Act II” is not a live-video, it is a live-art-video and you are free to discuss it very controversially; which is exactly what I want.”

What's normal? She has different styles. In her metal albums her approach is most often more rock and contemporary. Wanna listen her beautiful vocals then 2/3 of her career is Christmas and classical music where she does that. Well, sometimes she does that in her metal songs too, but for metal her normal isn't the same which was her normal in Nightwish.

She sounded like she's trying sooo hard to use her chest voice which isn't her strength. ACT I is a lot better IMO.

@Bob Digi Chest voice is basically the same as a speaking voice. It's about where the air vibrates. OK so I'm french and I don't remember the translation of the words so I'm gonna give you the general area that concerns each. If the air vibrations are in the upper throat/nose/palate makes the sound sorta resonate in your head => headvoice. If the air vibration are in the middle/lower throat, it resonates in your chest => chest voice. there's a passage from one to the other that's different for everyone and more or less easily accessible even with hard work. So there's often a sort of "jump" between the two. (it often gives the impression that the person is trying hard but it's something that's incredibly hard to control even for most professional). Often when you have good control over your voice, head voice is easier to control because you've got less air to deal with, then chest voice, but both can still be relatively controlable no matter your state of mind/general health. The jump from one to the other however is more easily impacted which is why it can be incredibly hard even for the best to control it when they have bad days (there are of course exceptions, because not everyone's anatomy is the same) Generally speaking the best way to recognize it is to practice it. The other way is to hear people doing them separately while knowing which is which. Then it's a matter of habit. Ironically in this song she barely uses her chest voice aside from the beginning though she does get a bit on the jump "passage" part for a couple of notes here and there. She's not trying hard to sing in her chest voice 'cause she does that easily, but the switch from one to the other was harder than it can usually be because she wasn't feeling well. Also you'll rarely hear someone sing in the notes they speak because it does take a different technique. It's part of why different countries have different types voices ^^.

Urgh... She's my favorite singer but I can't... Her voice is so strange to my ears now 😭 I loved (and still do) her voice in her first 3 albums but then I don't know what happened it just feels kind of... Empty? I'm just sad about that 😞

Nope, Hildr isn't exactly wrong. Because this song's vocal style is nothing like early Nightwish songs were. Tarja has very different vocal style songs. The point is that she isn't even trying to sound beautiful in this song: it's agressive and dramatic, and mostly sang in contemporary style. You wanna hear her beautiful vocals? Listen to her classical or Christmas songs, her vocals are more beautiful than ever was in NW. And in some of her metal songs too, for example try "Oasis" and youäll see it is a matter of STYLE chosen for the song. I too don't always like her choise. But she does sometimes sing metal too with similar fashion as in Nightwish.

Me encanta Tarja, ha mejorado la potencia de su voz, pero ha cambiado su técnica vocal de tal manera que comparándola con las grabaciones de estudio tiene un toque informal y un tanto gangoso, está claro que puede llegar las notas y cantar con mayor limpieza como se observa en su faceta clásica, solo que en la faceta de rock la siente informal y ya no se escucha tan estético, por otro lado la selección de sencillos son canciones vieja que hemos escuchado muchas veces, por que no escoger algo de los últimos discos para que la gente la conozca con aires nuevos. aun con todo es la mejor. .

Totalmente de acuerdo. No conozco mucho de técnica vocal, pero se siente más que ella usa su voz de pecho en canciones que ella siempre cantaba totalmente con voz de cabeza. Supongo que es más esa voz mixta, la que no suena bien y que no se escucha agradable al oido la forma como ella la controla.

Tiefe dunkle Mitternacht exactamente su voz de pecho es profunda y caza bien en unas canciones como house of wax, y la combinación de voz de pecho y cabeza está bien como en "in for a kill" que pasa de graves a agudos, pero no va con algunas canciones iconicas como esta, no me imagino utilizando su voz de pecho en stargazers, sleeping sun, minor heaven, our great divide, su voz operistica es hermosa, su sello y le da mayor magnificencia a las canciones pero probablemente le requiere un mayor esfuerzo.. lo cierto es que el no usarla en algunas canciones no es acertado, saludos.

Creo que si bien tiene que trabajar un poco en el control de la voz de pecho, esta ha servido para sustituir justamente el tono gangoso que desde hace muchos años se le está saliendo. Chance con lo cansada que se oye se notaría mas lo gangoso, pero la voz de pecho, si bien algo improvisada, es atinada para dar fuerza a las canciones

Definitely this is not one of her best performances. Visually, the editing is beautiful but I don’t like the excessive use of the chest voice, is unnecessary. The choice of this song surprise me I would choose some of the new song. I saw the two concerts and I have to say that the one in London is the best. She sound outstanding at this one. Here in Milan at list at 8 songs she sings and sound beautiful and powerful, the problem is how she use the chest voice. Clearly don’t fit into this song and among of others. That’s a shame because the edition, esthetic and sound is so good. But in London she was brilliant. I prefer that concert so far. Whatever she still one of the best singers and she look more happier than ever.

Leo lo que dicen los fans y estoy de acuerdo con muchas cosas. Se oye cansada, es algo característico de algunas canciones de Act II, principalmente No bitter end e Eagle Eye. En mi opinión, si bien tiene que controlarla un poco mas, su voz de pecho es muy acertada, da fuerza a varias partes de las canciones, y sustituye un tono gangoso que desde hace varios años le ha salido (y del cual en sus conciertos de rock abusa) Los conciertos clásicos se caracterizan por mostrar el poder entero de su voz, es INMENSO, hay que ver el que ofreció en finlandia este año para darse cuenta. Esa misma calidad nos gustaria ver en los de rock, entiendo que es distinto, es mas cansado, hay que moverse mucho, pero creo que Tarja tiene una voz ultra privilegiada y la ha cuidado tanto que no debería sobrecargarse de trabajo si quiere cantar muchisimos años más Tarja, tienes que descansar, un año siquiera, reflexiona un poco lo que te dicen los fans, que muchos de ellos son expertos en musica, cantantes, etc, y de verdad es en muy buen plan. Nos has ofrecido tantas cosas bellas que es tiempo de consentirte a ti misma y pensar ahora en tu bienestar. Si lees esto, te lo digo en muy buen plan, un descanso te viene bien, estarás más viva que nunca.

Eres el primero que veo que menciona el tono gangoso que tenía en sus primeros años como solista, todos estamos paralizados en este año, espero le funcione para trabajar mas con su voz y con su cuerpo, sabemos que es una mujer muy saludable, así que seguro tendrémos a Tarja trabajando por al menos otros 15 o 20 años.

Tarja lo ha dado todo durante años desde Nightwish es obvio que llegaría el momento en que su voz se escucharía cansada o ella esté arta de cantar perfectamente bien, debería darse un descanso su voz de pecho no es buena y suena algo gangosa. Ánimo Tarja!

it was just a bad singing day at the end of a very long concert (bigger than usual bc of videotaping for this). if you check her on Masters of Rock in the same year, her voice was perfect! :D

Ay Tarja... :/

She was obviously not 100% this night but she sang those high notes at the end like NOTHING. Stop judging a night-off and pay more attention to her awesome energy and commitment with her audience. She's not trying to be clear perfect anymore - everybody was cursing her for being boring and perfectionist. Anyway, she's much better to watch live. Go to her show and have fun!

Die alive always sucked, it is a bad song and she is always very hit and miss singing it... she has an amazing array of songs but ugh I hate that one and a couple others only. This dvd, unfortunately did no favours to her voice, she sounds uncoordinated and very flat, i listened to that snippet from the next one, the best of and I fear the same will happen, it is frustrating to find that her instagram lives her vocals are flawless and in these important concerts she is just all over the place.

Plus she ends jumping and running and doing all kind of happy stuff and losing breath hahah :P but seriously, she was amazing on that same year, Masters of Rock was surreal. I truly believe it was just an off singing day, it's hard to be vocally well all the time in the middle of a tour like she does all the time. Luckily, those who see everything she does understand her voice actually got better and more interesting, still challenging and unique. such a shame some people take this specific performance as a representation of her current singing. I hope "Best of Tarja" make people forget about Act II even I like it very much :P

@@LigeiaNoire yep, the snippet from "Best Of" was very Live in Milan alike LOL but cannot lie, I'm so excited, the setlist and the great arrangements made it for me already. I am one of those (few) who listen to Tarja because of the instrumentals too. Cannot forgive her for never releasing Shadow Self and In The Raw instrumental tracks :P

From what I have understood, using soprano only is physically very straining to your vocal cord, especially long term over the years.. So you might wanna chill on her using her chest voice to ease up the straining. I mean tbh, she sounds just fine either way, artists evolve, their voices do the same, how about fans evolve too and leave the hate back in the end of '90s or something? Just let her do her thing, that's the best practice, and if you don't want to listen to it, don't? No one's holding you around at gunpoint.

she happened not to be on good form on the day of this concert, it was also a very long setlist and this song was late right close to the end, however I've watched her 1 year later after this performance and she sounded absolutely amazing live. If you have the opportunity someday, go watch her live! :D

Creo que tarja necesita darse un descanso, es mi cantante favorita y lo seguirá siendo, pero soy objetiva y en esta perfomance su voz suena desafinada y cansada. Tantos álbumes, giras, proyectos etc en tan poco tiempo pasan factura.

Liliana Vess de acuerdo! En Act II suena muy cansada, irónicamente eso se nota más en las tres primeras canciones del concierto, y sobre todo la primera (no bitter end). Creo que si quería promocionar con otro sencillo lo hubiera hecho con Lucid Dreamer o Shameless, esas canciones son ultra poderosas y suenan muy bien, asi como una muy buena parte del album, pero en si el inicio y el final no. Deberia darse un año sabático, ella misma está cansada, en todas las entrevistas lo dice, darse un tiempo de entrenar su voz y dar mejores performances, ya que tiene una voz privilegiada y todos esperamos de ella la misma calidad que ofrece en sus conciertos clásicos. Tarja, descansa un rato, te lo mereces!!

@@josemanuelguadarrama9410 Yo la escucho un tanto nasal en Act II, la vi en CDMX y Puebla (si, dos veces en una semana) en el 2017 y cantó mil veces mejor, tengo entendido que se operó la naríz unos meses antes de su gira en México y tal vez se deba a eso que suene tan rara su voz en Act II que fue grabado un año antes de esa operación.

Manuel Guadarrama Si, ella lo publicó en su Instagram en aquella época. Y también fui al concierto del Circo Volador del 2019, a mi gusto fue el mejor concierto que he vivido de esta gran artista :’)

I am very sorry but I have to say I do not like the way she sings this song. I loved Act 1 and do love how she has improved on her chest voice but after listening and watching Act 2 over and over again I still think that Act 1 is so much better than Act 2. I can't listen to how she interprets her songs on Act 2. 😢 Still love her and will buy her studio stuff but I don't think I will buy another live album or BlueRay

For some reason she's forcing the use of her chest voice, and nobody really likes it, so I really hoped it would last for like a year or two and then she'd realise Ok it sucks, but nope, she's still using it. Sometimes it can sound really good in some songs, but usually when she changes from her chest to head voice she makes weird sounds...

Milan Kitic she just needs to work on it. It is a new technique for her and I am sure she likes it herself, as in my mind a classically trained soprano would be way more relaxed by using her head voice instead, but she should first acknowledge her lack of training for this particular technique and set her focus there in the future. Keep in mind those shows are recorded before a year or two. The deeper and lower notes sound great, it is that passage between the two "voices" that everything falls apart. She will need proper lessons for nurturing that versatile range and most probably she will need the help a professional tutor/coach in order to effectively achieve that (I highly doubt that she doesn't have one, she just maybe consults him/her for warm-up activities etc.. )You know, as a musician I can say for sure that it's damn hard to develop a style different from that you have been doing all your life. But still, with all the respect and love I have towards her music and as a person too, most of those "professional" recordings which were recently uploaded sound very unprofessional to say the least. Unjustifiable if I want to be more accurate. Never mind... Rock on Tarja! Let's hope she reads/hears messages like that and eventually takes proper care of her voice we all love because she may end up struggling with her higher register too if she puts pressure in her chest voice in a wrong way.

I agree 100 % with everything you said. I could just add that her diction and pronounciation on many words also adds to the "strange sounds" she makes so that's one more thing to keep an eye on. Anyways wish her all the best and hope for more songs like Love to Hate and Diva on the next album!

I'm a big fan since forever but any musician knows that chest voice is NOT right. I don't know why she is singing like that, sometimes it's hard to listen.

Q voz horrorosa. Q técnica é essa q ela está usando? Se já não bastasse as músicas serem todas iguais, dela estar sentada com toda a força na sua zona de conforto, ainda apresenta essa voz ridícula ao vivo? Já tinha resolvido não mais assistir seus shows. E com essa comprovação registrada de forma vergonhosa, mantenho meu afastamento. Pena. Amo a Tarja! Mas não entendo o q ela está fazendo com ela mesma.

Eduardo Souza ela não está sentada na sua zona de conforto. De forma alguma! Se assim fosse, ela continuaria cantando com a voz de cabeça e soando magnífica. Na minha humilde opinião foi por a criticarem tantas vezes em relação a só usar a sua técnica lírica, que ela decidiu sair da sua zona de conforto e se arriscar no canto mais rock.

I'm reading some post of these "geeks" trying to give Tarja voice lessons? Her voice is perfect. This crummy band she has needs to be replaced. Tarja is a firststringer with a 4th string band. Nightwish is a first string band, with a third string vocalist. Let us pray for reconciliation.
