Longer than I would like to admit ago, I was an exchange student to Kuopio's music school. Tarja's school and mine used to do a lot of stuff together e.g. sing and perform at each other's schools etc. Tarja was in the grade below me but these are very small schools so everyone knew everyone else fairly well. This was looooong before she got famous. She was then and is now one of the absolute nicest people you could ever hope to meet and she has an absolute gift for speaking other languages. One of the things I really admire about her is that fame hasn't changed who she is as a person. She is still humble and sweet just like she was all those years ago before she got famous.

There is NO ONE in the world who can sing Sleeping song like her. Versatility, vocal strength, no need of screaming, passion. I love it.

An album of Finnish tango and folk cover arrangements would be BRILLIANT. Tarja and the Gulls both get the old-school rustic romantic charm of that kind of music, and I'm 100% they'd blow our socks off.

As far as I know it is a play of words on the name of Steven Seagal.All right, the Major proved me wrong and the Heavy Quiz of the Sauna revealed the true story: the name really and truly comes from the Seagulls.

A voice teacher with classical background once reacted to Tarja´s rendition of Phantom Of The Opera with Nightwish with the words: " Oh my God,- Perfection!"

I loved every second of this episode,i like the interview, the songs different but fantastic sung from Tarja and the races also. What a lady? Always herself with humour and that great smile, she enjoyed every minute. Thank you very much for calling her. You are fantastic also!!!

Must confess I came (initially) only for the sake of Tarja although I knew Seagulls to some extent. And I JUST FELL IN LOVE IN EVERYTHING! @@Aurinkohirvi Working with language history, I just wanted to mention the fun fact that Finnish 'airo' and English 'oar' are cognates and thus of course fundamentally the very same word - in this case it was borrowed into Proto-Finnic from Proto-Germanic (from original Proto-Germanic *airō), just like the Finnish words 'taika' (the English cognate being "token") and 'pelto' (the English cognate being "field", where the /p/ in Finnish shows that that loan occurred before the /p/ > /f/ shift happened in Germanic ('Grimm's Law')) etc. The forms are of course similar, so I assume that many Finns have noticed the similarity. I find the early language contact between the ancestors of the Finns and the ancestors of the modern Germanic peoples to be quite fascinating.

@@darkness_visible Another example of the nature of Finnish language as a deep freezer of Proto-Germanic words is *kuningas, Proto-Germanic *kuningaz, which evolved into German König, English king and Swedish kung later elsewhere. Finns still use the original word in almost the original form.

@@darkness_visible Yeah, you're right, I have a list of Proto-Germanic loanwords in Finnish. That's the early Iron Age. Obviously trade was well established: lots of trade and seafaring loanwords, domesticated animals and plants names, new ideas loanwords. Many of the words are still in use. I did not remember if "airo" was one of the words, but sure enough noticed the similar root though. I suppose if one studies Germanic or Finnic languages, this Proto-Germanic and Finnic contact is an important one, preserving so many loanwords. I'm not a linguist, and actually I have very little faith to paleolinguistics able to explain much about the prehistory. Having followed the linguists' discussion and attempts to explain prehistory, I see decades of continuous failures. And even now, when one is supposed to know more than in the previous decades, it's hard to find a fistful of linguists who agree. I see it this way: studying prehistory archeology and genetics are much more important ones. No offence meant. Linguistics use Proto-Germanic loanwords explaining the relations of Baltic Finnic languages (or dialects) during the Iron Age. Sure, that's an interesting topic. What I find even more interesting topic is the era of Nordic Bronze Age (aka Scandinavian Bronze Age) Culture. Also Finland's coasts and (despite the name) the Baltic Peninsula coasts were part of that culture. Suggested language for the Nordic Bronze Age Culture is Proto-Indo-European. However the Proto-Indo-European dialect group Finnic languages were in contact with, is the Indo-Iranian group, the Satem-languages! So apparently Baltic Peninsula and Finland saw a language change between late Bronze Age and early Iron Age.

The end of the Sleeping Sun reminded me of some sort of Gypsy music. Very well done and sounded beautiful & up-beat towards the fin(n)ish.

What a fantastic episode, and what a celebration for wrapping up this great season. Everyone was having such a good time in this video, I really did not want it to end at all -- and the Gulls and Tarja sound simply sublime together. I absolutely would buy some kind of Laituritanssit type collab album full of bluegrassy covers and rejuvenated Finnish schlager and tango... can you imagine how wonderful old standards like Satumaa or Albatrossi would sound with this lineup?

She's in excellent fit. In a bit too excellent if you ask me. Wouldn't mind if she was a bit rounder, in eye candy sense. But she always said that she needs to be in good fit to be able to sing as she does.

This is exactly why I enjoy Tarja so much, she is like Rowan Atkinson, a very unique artist that, at the same time is goofy and genius. She is such a genuinely funny and well resolved woman. It was very telling seeing her finally singing with a folk kind of ensemble, this is how I imagined her voice would stand out from acoustic mood and folksy music, had her previous band gone down that path, it just does not match her voice. I loved the UMLB version though, very tango oriented indeed, reminded me of Romanian traditional music, I do think that her voice is way too powerful and dramatic for this kind of festive and light music,. However, Sleeping sun was brilliant, you can never go wrong with Tarja singing it, she is the wish of the night and will always be. One in a million and you guys did a great job, completely revamping the songs, thank you for bringing the Karelian girl on board!

Yeah, I said in my comment about UMLB that I would rather have heard her sing it with softer approach. Like her Christmas songs. I think it would have worked better with that kind of song. That being said, it wasn't bad with more classical vocals either, it had its good moments. Right, she likes to make fun and make people laugh. She does sometimes go all goofy.
